Cheers for the replies, sorry bobdog i have a red one 52 plate year 2001 manufacture. The restricted to 100bhp is an interesting one and probably makes more sense, how could you tell its been restricted?

Hi Ayjay

Bought my first fazer 1000 last april 2014, never ridden a fazer before so had no idea of what to expect.
My mate has a same age fazer 1000 with 14k on the clock mine has 24k the only other diference is mines got a beowulf can on it and his is factory fitted, he had an opportunity to ride my bike at weekend and is reporting how much quicker mine is and he says its noticable big time. Could it be that something is wrong with his ie carbs not ballanced correctly or could i without knowing have bought a bike that has been ivanised. Is there a way of physically telling on the bike.

Thanks

Thanks you all for taking your time and answering my post, i suspected vivid coctail red but after being burned twice i want to make sure the bike sprayer i take it too gets the right colour. There is one guy local to me who comes well recommended so we will see. The bike is to stay and i want to make sure every inch of it is tip top so its going to be worth the effort.

Thanks again

Hi Folks

a long story but wanted to get mi fazer 1000 repainted as it was tatty with minor scratches, some fool of a self proclaimed bodyshop i took it too used a blind man to spray it and yes it was the wrong colour to boot, so they resprayed it with the same incompetance with guess what another wrong colour. I have not been back for a third time and they have now decided that they no longer touch bikes.

My main concern is getting it back to its originol colour which is red its a 2002 model it used to look like this
http://databikes.com/infophoto/yamaha/fzs_1000-2002.html

Under the seat there is the label which tells me the model production code and yamaha colour code the colour code is C and i cannot find it on this list
https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/yamaha-parts/color-codes.aspx

Can anyone please help

Sorry you got caught, i was recently on the a55 in north wales. I needed to do the research on what would happen 71 in a 50. North Wales follow the agreed guidlines which is 10% + 9mph in which ever max speed zone your in. So sadly in a 60 you would need to be doing below 75mph to qualify for the speed awareness course.

Although the Police attempt to resolve most offences by way of a Fixed Penalty Notice, at excessive speeds, a Court appearance is inevitable. For speeds in excess of 100 mph (or more than 30 miles above the relevant limit) the punishment starts at disqualification as opposed to penalty points. However, the decision is at the discretion of the Court and in certain circumstances, a disqualification can be avoided.

I am on a learning curve with the lingo and really getting to know bikes and the fazer. My instructor told me to by a fazer 1000 i am a big lad bit he said their just simply bang on and run forever ... you know i think he is right. I have ordered the 450mm more torque and less bhp is fine, its louder than the standard and as abrupt as it sounds it gives the knob head blinkered 4+ wheel drivers something to tell them i am here. One thing i have learnt is bikes arn't dangerous its every other fecker on road who is.

of god i cant wait for the sound of the new can, can i ever get fed up with the acceleration well erm no. A mate has a ducati 996 same as me midlife crisis and he sat on my fazer an being 40+ he said you know this feels tonnes better than mine proper seat upright an comfy.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Gen 1 Exhaust question
« on: 18 September 2014, 12:14:22 am »
Ok going from biker virgin to wanting to make my ride my own - don't know why as i have never been interested in modding a car in anyway. I feel a bit like the bloke out of close encounters of the 3rd kind-  moulding the mountin out of anything he can get his hands on, but he has no idea why - perhaps i am starting to build a rocket ship.

Anyway like the look of beowulf gear, new stainless steel radiator grill and sides arrived today and their now on and the bikes looking better already. My mate has a gen 1 with a titanium beowulf exhaust and sounds great i am more of a shiny person so i want stainless to match the grill. My question is they do a 450mm silencer and a 380mm silencer they claim either gives more power and they have confirmed i will not need to retune anything on the bike unless i have not got a non standard air filter fitted or have a power commander on. Ok i know what an air filter is but wtf is a power commander i know the bikes not got one as it is standard. Also and be careful ladies why the difference in size is it cosmetic or is there a more scientific reason.

Hi All

Just an update on my suspension riding problems, perhaps all of you know what i have found out and i am teaching grandmother to suck eggs, as i have stated i am a somewhat road biker virgin and same with being a fazer virgin having only had mine 6 months. Changing the suspension settings on my fazer made a great deal of difference the bike felt alot more in tune with me and the road. However since i bought the bike i have felt uncomfortable with it in that it feels like it skips when going over road seems lines etc. Being a bike virgin and talking to non bike virgin i was advised that some skipping as i call it was normal. So on i plod i did have the bike in a local garage over something else and he had a quick look and said it all looked fine to him so on i continued with a hop skip and a jump, i have become very good at avoiding the seems and paintwork on the road.

Anyway took the bike to a garage thats only 100 yards from work they do bodywork so i was just wondering if they could touch up the minor scratches it has, i have never pimped a car but i have already got ordered a beowulf radiator grill and side covers in stainless steel what the hells going on with me, i have washed this bloody bike more times than my past 3 cars.

The mechanic seems a nice guy and races bikes he even suspects he had the correct r6 shock as he used to race them... interesting. As soon as he looked at my bike he said i bet thats misbehaving on the road specially on the seems. I first thought someone had worded him up and he was taking the p**** but no he was genuine. He pointed out my front tyre was completley goosed even thought its new last year according to the receipts, goosed in the way its misshapen and even goes to a point in the centre. The guy said put a new tyre on the bike and it will feel like a new bike, 311 miles later and wow, i thought i was just a slow rider coz i am past learning and should have tamed the midlife crisis but no all along my lack of confidence in myself was actually myself telling me something was not good. As a bike virgin what did i have to compare my knowledge with, now my bike feels solid on the ground and does not fuss what it goes over in terms of seems, paint ect Now after so many months of being despondant i can go out and enjoy the ride more without the worry of the bike sticking to the ground.  oh the tyre was a bridgestone 23 something if anyone was curious.

here is where i am up to  :rolleyes

Following advice of this forum i have come to a few conclusions. Without a doubt it is clear the standard Fzs 1000 suspension is not the best for me, changing / upgrading the suspension is the best chance of making the bike as tip top as you can get it, whether its with an R6 shock, ktech springs or defaulkner. This is something i am going to do but i feel as a novice who is not capable of using the bike to even 30% of its potential then for now until i gain my miles and confidence i will put it on my wish list.

When i say i am not technical i mean i am not Bike technical as their something new to me, but i do hold qualifications in engineering and have a good mechanical mind, understanding the concepts of two wheels and how they make provision for the stresses of weight, braking, accelerating and general riding does take some understanding. With the advice of here it was apparent the suspension for my weight was not right. So with the trusty bike manual, key and screw driver i adjusted spring preload, rebound damping force and compression damping force to one click before max on front and back. Instantly the bike feels more solid when i sit on it and far less spongy. It now lowers equally where as before the back went down more than the front. This is supposed to be a good thing from what i have read.

The problem that i had the week before had shattered my confidence, and i was aware that my imagination could be playing havock with my mind and in reality there was not any problems. The bike felt all week slippy, even the tarmac seal they use when they put the road back together after roadworks seemed to feel slippy. To rid my mind gremlins i decided to check the tyre air pressure again which is something i only did 9 days ago. Back was 40 (i know should be 39 but i am heavy) and front was 25! To lose 11 bar in 9 days is a problem and the tyre is not even going to be looked at as i have ordered a new one. i had read and seen on youtube fazer owners state that even 1 bar down on the front can make the bike feel unstable and mine was 11 bar down.

The keen to ride side of me kicked in though and i wanted to find out what the bike was like on its new settings so it was air in tyre and off out. The bike did not feel slippery once and totally different more in control of the road and far more stable, breaking feels good and so does the acceleration (well that always feels good lol) meaning its not see sawing like it was as much. On acceleration the bike used to sit down and i felt like i was sitting up hill, i spent alot of time on roundabouts as my confidence is shot and wanted to relax with leaning a little more, up and down a few winding country roads and even on the motorway for quite a few miles and i hesitate to say this i think it was the best ride i have had since getting the bike. Yes  i am still a novice no i cant ride like an experienced biker, yes i am slower than an experienced biker. All of this is fine with me, i want to enjoy learning the bike and eventually one day when i need more there is always ivanising lol. At the moment and it may sound sad i just like to be out there. On the motorway i am happy at 70, 6 weeks ago it was happy at 50 its all time and experience i suppose. What i found out last night on the motorway was the acceleration of the thing is staggering and i know i am only tickling the throttle not opening it up fully and only going between 0 and 70 ish (not as much as 80 lol) i think something is broken with me as i want to come of at each junction and rejoin the motorway again just to feel the acceleration lol

Thanks for all your help

At 19st I wouldn't be dropping the forks anywhere.
I did send him a pm but either he hasn't read it or doesnt beleive me.
I would imagine he has used up the soft part of the spring just in the sag.
It does sound like he doesn't have much grasp of the technical side of suspension so may be better off going to a professional to have it set up.

My apologies i am new to the forum and was not aware of a messages feature, i have also just found the notification email in my hotmail junk email so in future i  can make sure i get them. As i said new to bikes and have not got a true grasp of the technical side.

It is complicated but i can see clearly what your saying and the back does go down alot more than 35mm as opposed to the front, i do have the manual but its too technical and your explanation should help me figure out the first stage and thats making sure the preload.I will have a play and see how the bike feels then and let your know

cheers

Bit of a climb in to Garage, they are Bridgstone and less than 6 months old Battlax Bt 21f on front and Battlax Bt 023 on back rear pressure is 40psi and fromt is 36psi. The spring is red as you said, the top of the forks under the handle bar have a screw and a the screw points in the middle of between h-s

As i have already said i am new to bikes, i sometimes feel the back or front tyre twitch but this could be in my mind. I have checked the tyre pressures and their ok. The twitch could be in my mind and nerves but as the bike is a second hand Fazer 1000 Gen 1 i have been thinking the previous owner may have been adjusting it to suit him/herself and it may not be right for me. I weigh 19stone can anyone advise me on what settings the front and rear suspension should be on.

Thanks

As I said I am more a less a novice on bikes but reading your observations I have presumed some of my amateur riding is the cause of the issue and it looks as if now this is not the case. Your point with regards to cold and low rev running I thought it was me, it is clunky and snatchy at walking pace especially when cold.

I keep hearing about the rear shock I am 19 stone is this why it feels a bit slippy sometimes even though the tyre pressures are right, or is this because I am imagining it due to lack of experience.

I defiantly agree about the front forks the brakes are far more powerful than the bike can handle and too much front to the experience of my aching leg can cause all sorts of problems I learned the hard way on that one.

Being a big lad screen Is only could for protecting my meat and two veg as everywhere else gets the hairdryer looking at a double bubble screen to resolve this.

Thanks for the posts. I think Ivanise is something you do when the excitement of the brute force power that the fazer already has starts to wear off, for me to do that now would probably end up with me giving the bike up to be honnest as i am yet to get the thing properly over 6000 revs without feeling nervous. I am getting a little more confidence then i braked a little hard coming to a stop and felt the front tyre slide a little on some crappy ground i was going less than 5mp - foot out and it stopped a problem from happening but my leg muscles are telling me to take care.It was my fault all the way and i am kicking myself for the schoolboy error but in many ways after only 4 weeks of being licenced i am still a schoolboy.  For now and probably for years to come i am going to stick with the title of novice on a big bike and i feel happy with that.

Over the penines the other night i had a free road and opened it up wow a whopping 70mph i have been to this speed before and it sort of feels comfortable but i have come to the conclusion i need to get my head behind the screen otherwise i will probably float away at some point with the bike as i feel like a parachute. Being 6ft 3 with a 54inch chest dont help with the parachute effect.

I think my time driving cars and probably dodgems expects me at some point to dominate the bike and be able to ride it at its max. What is clearly apparent is that i will never dominate this bike in any way its got the ability to give me a good spanking. What i find a buzz and it may sound sad but getting away at the lights i dont need to break the speed limit but its ruddy good at leaving the rest of the traffic well behind its not a boy racer feeling its the buzz of enjoying the power and yet i still have not really experienced its true power only just tickled it. The power is one thing but i think the comfort is good having been out for 4 hours i get no wrist, knee or ankle ache not to mention a lack of a numb arse i could probably ride it all day without feeling discomfort.

The sad part of me came out to play yesterday the cover plate which goes over the exup pully had a brocken stud left in it, i have been told by another fazer owner to keep this pully cables lubed and make sure i copper greese the screws as they tend to seize up. So out came the exup valve and plate and stud was extracted i even ordered the correct set of screws from yamaha lol

i was ever an anorak but since i got this bike ......

Thanks for the comments, pics of the wife eh .. why you got anything you want to scare .. god hope she don't read this. Only kidding mrs.

Yeah i think i have the bug, after a bottle of wine i tend to go in the garage and stair at the bike like some love sick teenager, and will simply enjoy my riding at my pace. Having the power there though allows me to overtake better i think less time on wrong side of the road is always good. Ivanised took me a while to suss what that was as local honda specialist is called ivan and i am thinking god he must be good to know how to get more out of a fazer, eventually i managed to find the post with the explanation.  :\

For now though i will continue to nod at other riders and maybe one day i will introduce ivanising to my bike.
