I had this and for me it turned out to be the fairing in fills, a bit of foam padding soon addressed the issue :)

On my bike it's the Choke Bar that that sits across the carbs and the choke cable pulls to slide the choke into position.   This rattles at around that rev and gives a metallic (annoying) rattle.

You'll probably find lots of people will chip in with rattles and buzzes - i'd advise wearing earplugs and voila ! the problem is cured.

I bought a roll of self adhesive foam from an ebay seller and lined the infill edges with this which helped a fair bit with the buzzing but didn't cure the problem totally.

On the gen 1s, if a previous owner has ever replaced the top cowl, or taken it off to do a paint job etc, everyone always forgets to replace the foam stickies that are there to stop this buzzing. Mine was like this, took the infills off to find stickies in place but a bit flattened down, so I left those and just stuck some new ones in as well. No more buzzes  :)

There should be 5 or 6 of the standard Yam ones on each side, running right up the side and around the front of the infill panels, but no harm in using a couple of extra ones. You could use any bit of sticky-back foam really, but Yam ones are only a few pence each. Stick them on the panel itself to avoid guessing where it'll sit if you put them on the inside of the top cowl itself. The outer edge of the panels turns down, that's where they go.

I had the same and thought it was the infills - but wasn't. Drove me mad. Wasn't the screen either but...taking the screen off you'll see a big fat loom/wire going down the middle away from the clocks and down and out the left hand-side. Turned out it was that catching on the plastic front light housing and vibrating. So, I moved it around and slipped it down the other side the LEFT rather than the RIGHT I think (you'll see if you take a look) and that cured it. Slight faff. Mirrors off and a couple of front fairing fasteners at the front to give you a bit more room but easily done.

I was so pleased to have cured it because it was doing my head in even with ear plugs.

My alarming whirring at 40mph a few months back was an uber dry Speedo drive!
