Hi all,
Just looking for some advice and views on brake discs and pads. I just had my front tyre changed and got told that there is a lip starting to form on rim of the disc so its time for a replacement set. Has anyone got any suggestions? I know that the existing set are Yamaha stock but EBCs look good, I've seen some Armstrongs and Galfers too.
As one mechanic told me once "You can save money everywhere else on a bike but never scrimp on tyres and brakes as one day they will save your life!"

Not a fan of EBC discs or pads to be truthful.
Unfortunately discs cost a bloody fortune, but avoid going dirt cheap, and even more so ordering from abroad as you may well find it's false economy and end up spending even more.
SBS pads are the way to go for starters, although if you look around on Ebay you may get a good deal on Galfer pads which have served my bike very well.

If you use your bike in the wet or cold and wet then don't buy EBC X series. :thumbdown
in My experience of EBC X series discs on the 600 was absolutable dire. :eek
When I need to replace my front discs a few years ago I opted for the EBC X series, purely because there HH brake pads are so good.
They just did not work well when cold and braking was non existant when cold and wet. I had to hold the brakes on to heat up the discs when ever it rained and when I was leaving home for work or work for home when they were cold. Once they were hot they were great.
A great disc if it never rained :rolleyes
After to many close calls which I avoided accidents by pure luck, I sourced a second hand set put them on and brakes were back to normal.
When I had to replace the rear I bought Brembo :thumbup which was as good if not better then the original, but unfortunately they do not do front discs.

Wierd, I have ebc disc n pads on my other bike and they are brilliant.
Just cos the discs have a lip on them don't mean they are no good. Measure the thickness and check against minimum.
Black shadow discs are good and kagizume at a push.

Just discovered now that Brembo now do front discs for the Fzs600, but cost around £220 each.
If they are anything like the rear one I have I will definitely be buying them when needed

Had Kagizume discs on my bike, paired with Galfer pads, for years now, and they've been an excellent combination with very decent pad and disc wear.
The discs are hard to find now though.

Sorry guys - the bike is a 2002 FZS1000 Fazer.
So EBCs aren't the way to go? I ride all year round so I need to get this one right otherwise it may cost me an absolute fortune! (probably will anyway looking at the price of discs)
I am tempted by Galfers though - but will have to save to get a pair of those babies!! :eek

There is a newer disc on the later FZS1000 part number 5PX-2581T-00 around £300 for a pair and is cheaper than many replacement discs, but at least you know it works in all weather :)

I'm not sure I want to get some Yamaha parts (famous last words), I want to uprate the front brakes. I am quite harsh on the brakes, my current discs are really groovy!! :D

Unfazed, did you try the X-lites with GG pads? I too had a horrible time with sintered, but have been using them with EBC’s organic pads since and am very happy with the braking.

They are, but that doesn't bother me much. Reduced disc wear at the expense of the bike being a bit grubbier seems good trade-off even without the improved braking performance.

I put in SBS 634HS in my 600. From not being able to lock up the front wheel to being able to do it with 2 fingers. They absolutely transformed the brakes.

I did and and SBS, I even put in an old set of OEM ones I had in the garage, made no difference, they were still lethal when wet and cold. Since I use my bikes in all weather it was just not worth the risk any longer :grumble I would not be a big user of brakes which excacerbated the problem because then when I did need them they were cold and had no initial bite at all.
Any of the above pads work perfectly fine with the OEM discs. :thumbup
Not a lover of the lack of initial bite of the Organic and only use them or Kevlar in the rear of the 600 where I found the HH to severe.
The HH in the rear of 1000 are fine, maybe due to the extra weight of the 1000 over the 600

I think I will probably go for the Galfers in a few months. I have seen a brake kit and the build quality seems great so they should last.

I had a ZZR which came fitted with Armstrong HH (I think or possibly GG). Lethal in the wet, fine when dry. I was riding over the Cwmystwyth pass when it started raining and the brakes stopped working. God bless my brown trousers.

I ride all year round so the brakes have to work in all weathers, even more so in the wet (it's why I have Pilot 4s).
London traffic during the school runs aren't fun
