Yeah that's right, there's a coolant drain bolt on the water pump on the bottom left side of the bike, take that out, take the cap off the radiator so it runs out quicker then just flush through with tap water (distilled is even better if you have it handy but not necessary)....then just fill with fresh coolant

They can be a pain sometimes but they do tend to keep you on your toes with looking after your bike, and it's for your own benefit in reality.
I wouldn't have gone near a bike with an exhaust flapping about to be honest, although i doubt i'd have got very far in London without being nicked anyway  :stop

Had some pretty strong winds here a couple of months and thankfully my bike didn't go over but I was unsure a few times - figured I was just being paranoid, but now I'm thinking I was just lucky!
These days its tucked away in a garage away from the wind and the elements :D


I thought Fire was one of those elements.. :b

I just changed mine after 4 years, with all year round riding, which in this country is either wet, cold or just shit weather.
It's all about the maintenance and how well it's looked after rather than mileage.
From experience it's normally tight links that tend to go first on a chain. I'm presuming you have the original chain on?
As long as you're not feeling any lumpiness at all then you should be okay, but as soon as it starts it will get worse very quickly.
I'd be more concerned about checking out the front sprocket nut if you're going on a long journey though, and personally i would want to change the whole lot while you're at it if you say the front sprocket looks worn, along with the modded wider 12mm nut just for peace of mind.

Well if it has been blown over then maybe it'd be worth putting the bike on the side stand but facing in to the direction of the wind.
It may look a bit out of place but if it prevents it happening again then it'll be worth it.
 
Or is that concrete a large step? I can't tell for sure from the photo'?

Cheers guys. I've had a look under the tank and nowt seems loose. Next time I run it down I'll chuck a couple of litres in a can and take it with, peace of mind like. Much as I love my new bike I REALLY don't fancy shoving it miles up the A59...

Sorry to see that happen to your pride and joy but a couple of observations....

1. The bins are all up against the wall or each other so if the wind was blowing from behind the direction that the photo was taken then they wouldn't actually go anywhere

2. You've got a cover on in high winds! Basically you've attached a parachute to your bike and believe me, when they catch the wind, they exert a huge force. I know this because I did exactly the same thing and actually SAW my bike get pulled over onto it's side a few years ago in strong winds.

3. The centre stand isn't actually the most stable way to keep the bike especially if on a cross wind. The best way to keep it is on it's side stand with the bike leaning away from the wind direction (ie, the wind pushing it onto the sidestand). The tripod that this creates is wider than the centre stand.

Not having a go (I re-read this and it's seems quite picky soz), just trying to offer up advice for future reference as I know how gutting it is to see your pride and joy on it's side

Highly unlikely i reckon, if the wind was strong enough to blow it over on that side then i i'd have thought the bins would've been half way down the road as well. It's not exactly a lightweight bike is it.
Centre stand too, nah, i don't buy that excuse!

Just a daft one, but if the tank was lifted to do soldering the majority of people would turn the fuel tap off.
It has been switched back on fully hasn't it?
 
Although i s'pose the fuel pump would try and compensate and tick like crazy?  :rolleyes

I had the same problem last week and it turned out to be a tight spot in the chain, Im fitting a new chain and cogs tomorrow so ill tell you how it goes


I suddenly had 2 links seize up on my chain, even though i cleaned and lubed it regularly, i think the bad weather and salt just takes it's toll over time.
Had a nice new chain and sprockets fitted yesterday, now it feels sweeeeet  :)

That sort of voltage drop while thumbing the starter is to be expected. I don't think that, or the fact that you are having to run the starter for a long time before the engine fires, indicates a duff battery. Quite the opposite in fact.
I'd be more suspicious of the mixture. Are you applying choke before trying to start? My Fazer starts readily without choke in warm weather... in cold conditions it needs it, but it has to be applied first. Weirdly, if it doesn't fire up without and then I apply choke, it just floods.
So, if you've not been doing that, give it a try. If you have been, make sure your choke cable is working i.e. pulling the little bar at the top of the carbs that actuates the four choke plungers.


He's touching 9 volts and you don't think there's a battery issue at all ???  :lol

Look at the actual chain as well for links that don't appear to be as horizontal as the others, you may have seized/rusted links.
They tend to sit at a slight angle, and will make the chain a bit lumpy which will be felt through the left foot peg.


Maybe worth laying off the power band until you sort this problem out!

Isn't it not sparking because the amperage/voltage is too low? How would a push start help? Just because the starter motor wouldn't have to turn?

Is it better to measure if its charging using ohms?


It will bump start with a flat battery, and quite easily too with these bikes.
I'd guess a good battery with no load should read at least around the 12.8 volts mark, and when charging with engine running will go above 14 volts.
Cold weather, age and sitting idle without a regular charge can all affect battery life span.

Really? The 00/01 bikes only have a 20 litre tank!
I never bother counting, i just fill the thing up, but the 02/03 model has a modified 22 litre tank. (98/99 18 litres)

Cheapest half decent ones about that i know of are on Ebay from Sandy Bike Spares.
I've got the wavy type on front and back and they've been absolutely fine.
And they're a bit thicker than normal too.

As I wait for my contact cleaner and wire brush I've noticed that my battery is at 12 volts and when I try to start it it goes to 9-10 volts...think I need a new battery?


As soon as you said it starts better with the lights off i immediately thought iffy battery!
I'd charge it off the bike first if possible, then measure the voltage before starting then after starting and make sure the bike is charging it okay.
