Has anyone modded a 98 fazer fuel tank opening to help stop the airlock when filling?It takes ages to get the last litre in.

One litre is about 10-15 miles. Is it really worth all the effort?

Yes, many times, you can also get the extra 2 litres of fuel the 00 model has. Just drill the small hole out to 5mm in the filler neck, and fill until you see it's level with the hole. The 00 model just had a shorter filler neck, which does the same thing.

CAUTION, CAUTION when you drill out the hole you MUST empty the tank and fill it with exhaust fumes from a diesel/petrol engine, or you risk EXPLOSION of fuel vapour from hot swarf off the drill. Assuming you've got a car or something, run a pipe into the tank, run the engine for about 10mins ish it will expel all the petrol vapour and drill.

You have to drill at a slight angle unless you've got a small angle drill head. Use a cocktail umbrella (or something similar) with a lengthen shaft and increased edge, to catch the swarf, push in open.

WARNING know of owners who just drilled, with fuel in the tank who then lost their eyebrows, hair, tank and burnt the bike! Don't say I didn't tell you.

Doing the mod will give you 2lt, as the 00 model, about 30 - 40 miles depending on how you ride.

In all seriousness, be careful. Some will just say drill it, yer you could get away with it, do you really want to risk it? Especially now with what all a trip to hospital could mean!

If i do it it will be drilled after emptying purging with gas and full of water.

You don't need water and you'll have all manner of issues getting it out.

40 miles on 2 litres???
That would be 440 miles on a (now modded) 22 litre tank.
Average mileage is 45 miles per gallon.

Yes, those figures are as much good as car manufactures, they're based on most owners who don't ride all year varying levels of experience etc. I did say depending on how you ride, now if you're a point and squirt merchant, you'll get figures like those, a bit also depends on the bike. I used to commute in/out of London 5 days a week A1, A406, Hanger Lane, I don't hang about ride quick but smoothly, I used to get 56 ish MPG, with a range of 260 - 5 miles before it run dry on the modded tank. I always carried a 2.5Lt can and would get caught out a few times a year, pushing the extra 5 miles.

I think you're find that's 20 miles per lt or there about's. It's all about the right wrist, gearbox and level of skill, you've either got or you haven't

Also a 98 - 99 models had 18lt, 00 - 01 20lt same tank just smaller neck filler. 02 - on 22lt different tank.

At 60mpg 2 litres = 26 miles

50mpg = 22 miles

I have always averaged about 10 miles per litre (45mpg) on my FZS600, ST1100 and CBF1000 with mixed riding. My FZR1000 was (quite) a bit thirstier.
Comuting on the FZS600 into London from Sussex averaged about 50mpg

A US pint is 16 fl oz (1 lb in weight) not 20, like ours, but still has 8 pints, 128 fl oz against our 160 fl oz, our gallon weighs 10 lb.

Same as, I've always used 10 miles per litre as a decent gauge, obviously give or take, but i'm always riding in unavoidable traffic, so i expect to use more than a fluent motorway run for example where I'm moving at a constant pace.
Not even worth me doing the Fuelly thing because my journeys are not a true example of fuel usage that the bike is actually capable of.

I did this mod when I had a Gen 2 Fazer 1000. I just used a long sharpened tapered punch. No drilling and the associated swarf etc. Easy peasy !

One way to do it, I would recommend it. I've known of owners doing just as you did and distorted the filler neck, so as it no longer seals properly when the cap is closed. They actually don't even notice, until they start smelling fuel in their garages on hot days and can't work out where it's coming from, or depending how much they've distorted things, they lose fuel over time when the bike is stored.

As with all bodging you could well get away with it, choice is yours.
