Title: Poor starting
Post by: Wizard9956 on 07 April 2020, 06:31:14 pm
Hi, I bought my fzs600 2003 a few months ago with 13,800 miles on the clock, it was running poorly at low speed so I stripped and cleaned the carbs , and it then ran much better. Lately I’ve started having trouble starting from cold , it doesn’t fire straight away on no3 cylinder ( cold exhaust header ), after about 30 seconds of rough running no3 warms up and idles perfectly, and rides perfectly. Has anyone had this sort of fault , I’m tempted to blame the carb idle circuit, but shouldn’t it run poorly  when warmed up too.
Any ideas great fully received.

Cheers Wiz

Do you use the choke?

No 3 is a problem cylinder on my bike as well as many of the other guys on here. Problems can be but are not limited to:

Thanks for the info , gives me some things to check . Will take a look at the drain holes
and try swapping the leads and see if the fault changes cylinder, although it runs well once warm , it is becoming a pain to start .

I do sometimes try using the choke , it’s a bit of a lottery , it either starts and revs as expected or it floods,
it’s the same with half choke .

Cheers Wiz

Is the battery in a good state, or could it need a boost?
Shouldn't need to use the choke at all in this warmer weather.

There is your problem, it's crab related.

No, if it's running fine when warmed up.

Providing the bikes running fine in all other respects, the issue is the cold start plunger on No3 crab.  Check that it's moving freely over all it's travel, that the link fork is correctly fitted in the plunger shaft rebate, or not bent/damaged.  These are almost never serviced, became dry and seize over time, there's a fair bit of play in the linkage/opening fork they can stick shut, choke effect doesn't work poor starting, or half open poor running at low revs when warm but fine higher revs.  The plunger unscrews as an assembly, often just a clean very light smear of grease and its sorted, that said they can suffer oxidisation of the plunger bore, this will need to be removed.

Typo , coils are cyl 1 + 4
2 + 3 not 1+3 dont want to mix up leads.

Still lost, this issue got nothing to do with coils.

Because earlier in the post it was suggested to swap 1 + 3 HT Leads.

So i'm guessing if the coils feed 1 + 4 and the other 2 + 3, then the bike isn't going to be too happy about things if you swap 1+ 3 over?

IF coil #2 which feeds cylinder 2&3 is failing, you will have issues with both cylinder #2 and #3. As such, as it is only cylinder #3 that has the issue, it is not the coil that is playing up but could be the individual plug or lead to #3 or more likely a fuel/air issue with #3.

If it was the coils the bike wouldn't run when warmed up.  It's not anything to do with the ignition circuit ;)

I'm just pointing out the answer to your earlier confusion.

Sounds like it probably just needs a good service. When was the last time it was given some real TLC?

Change the plugs and air filter. Balance the carbs and reset the TPS.
