FZS600 Fazer / Thinking of selling
« on: 08 November 2017, 09:47:23 am »
I'm contemplating getting rid of the FZS600. It's another expense I don't need and it's not getting used for 4 months of the year. So what sort of value would you put on a 1998 bike with 42k on the clock. No major damage, a few slight scratches (and I mean slight, barely cutting through the top coat). It's got a top box, not that that materially affects the cost. Valve clearances done 18 months ago (if I can find the receipt). Basically it's a completely average example.

General / Prototype
« on: 22 May 2017, 10:31:14 am »
Riding home on Friday I was following a sports car down the M5. A big sports car in the Aston Martin/Jaguar mould. On the back it said Prototype Vehicle and had the logo below on it which I can't quite identify.

Soddit I can't paste an image in. How do I insert a picture from my PC without having to go to the hassle of uploading it to Flickr or whatever?

FZS600 Fazer / Stuck Clutch
« on: 05 February 2017, 09:47:40 am »
The bike's been off the road for a month due to weather and work and stuff. The last time I did this in December the clutch plates seized up. I didn't notice until I put it into gear when there was a clunk and the engine stalled. Fortunately that seemed to cure it. It's happened again but before I try the jamming it into gear malarkey, is there anything else I could do firstly to fix it and secondly to stop it happening again?

General / One for the Speed Camera Techies

How do front facing average speed cameras work at night? It must be really difficult to take a picture of someone's front number plate with two bright light and infra red sources either side.

Just out of idle curiosity,no other reason.

I've only been in jail for 5 minutes and I've already been raped twice.

My uncle doesn't f*ck around when playing Monopoly.

FZS600 Fazer / location of temperature sensor
« on: 14 September 2016, 07:18:10 pm »
Hi all,
Where is the water temp. sensor located? The reason I ask is whenever it pours with rain I see the over temperature light come on or start flickering. I know it's not overheating because it's fine on a baking hot day stuck in the roadworks.

FZS600 Fazer / Centre Stand bump stop
« on: 05 May 2016, 09:14:36 am »
Following on from Bretty's post about his centre stand hitting the foot peg, I checked mine and it's doing the same. The rubber stop is missing from the bracket. Does anyone know where I can get a spare from? I was going to use a rubber door stop in the mean time.

Thanks

FZS600 Fazer / Engine vibey
« on: 07 March 2016, 03:12:07 pm »
I had the valve clearances done recently and the carb rubbers changed. They said they'd balanced the carbs. Since then there is a horrible vibration between 5000 & 6000 rpm. It comes right up through the seat and is very uncomfortable. Of course that happens to be between 60 & 70 mph. Before the work it was beautifully smooth. So is this normal?

As per title. I changed to the full site view to look at a particular thread and now can't get it back.

FZS600 Fazer / Starting problem revisited
« on: 30 January 2016, 07:37:45 pm »
So the starting problem reoccurred today. I've had the valve clearances done and new carb inlet rubbers fitted. The symptoms are, it will start fine out of the garage in the morning. Then on subsequent starts it will fire and idle then over the next 20 seconds the revs will fall away and even blipping the throttle won't save it. It then takes up to half an hour to get restarted. Oddly enough when I try to restart it I have most success with no choke but blipping the throttle.

My car mechanic suggested water in the float bowls but I drained them this morning and they're ok. I took out a spark plug and it was dry.

Help please!

General / Surgeons
« on: 12 January 2016, 04:02:31 pm »
Five surgeons are discussing who is the best to operate upon.
The first says "I find accountants the best, when you open them up everything is numbered."
The second surgeon replies "Personally I like electricians, everything inside them is colour coded."
The third surgeon responds "No I reckon Librarians are the best. Inside everthing is in alphabetical order"
The fourth surgeon said "I like construction workers, they understand when you have a few bits left over."
The fifth surgeon shuts them all up when he says "You're all wrong. Politicians are the easiest to operate on. No guts, no brains, no spine and no balls. Plus the head and the arsehole are interchangeable"

FZS600 Fazer / brake pad question
« on: 14 December 2015, 09:10:11 am »
I have these calipers on the front. (attachment).
Do they take standard FZS600 brake pads?

FZS600 Fazer / Grab Handles
« on: 23 November 2015, 10:08:48 am »
I'm after a replacement grab handle for my 1998 FZS. I've seen two sorts on ebay, one like mine (basically a round bar bent to shape) and the other is a different design like this http://www.totalparts.nl/picture/boonstra/000000131130-1.jpg.
Are the two compatable?

FZS600 Fazer / Do these things flood?
« on: 10 November 2015, 09:35:43 pm »
1998 boxeye.
I started the bike as per normal at work (no choke and just a slight blip on the throttle). I made the mistake of forgetting the sidestand so when I engaged 1st the engine cut out. Would it start? I tried putting the stand up and down several times, operating the kill switch then back to the sidestand. At no point would it start. Eventually I wound the throttle full open and cranked it over for about 10 seconds and it finally caught.
To me this doesn't sound like the sidestand switch as it  started after I'd given up with it.

General / Drivers and their lights
« on: 09 October 2015, 12:41:02 pm »
I reckon about 10% of motorists have no idea how to use their lights correctly.

It's foggy so
a. I can just use my sidelights no matter that I'm invisible beyond 100 yards.
b. No lights at all, that's fine too.
c. I've got those LED running lights so that's ok isn't it. No rear lights though but hey does that matter?

It's not foggy so.
a. It has been foggy so it's ok to have my rear foglights on all day.
b. I can drive with my front foglights on all night.

I'm driving around town so sidelights are ok cos that's legal.

It's dusk (dark enough that I have trouble reading a newspaper) and I'm driving a tarmac coloured car. But the streetlights aren't on so I don't need any lights either.

FZS600 Fazer / Champion or NGK
« on: 28 July 2015, 09:17:19 pm »
Thinking about changing the spark plugs. NGK CR8E are about £5 from most people or a bit more. The Champion equivalent I can get for about £2.90.

Are Champion that bad? It just seems rather a lot to lash out on spark plugs otherwise.

FZS600 Fazer / How far can you go?
« on: 16 June 2015, 07:30:47 pm »
I'm getting about 60mpg and I'm refuelling when the trip says 150miles (about11.5 litres). I've not tried to see if the low fuel warning light comes on yet. How far do you think I can go?

FZS600 Fazer / Oil Colour
« on: 19 May 2015, 05:53:20 pm »
How quickly should the oil go black on these bikes? When I bought the bike 3000 miles back the shop were supposed to have changed the oil and filter. However in the sight glass it looks quite dark.

General / Speed Camera
« on: 13 April 2015, 11:01:38 am »
I have a friend who thinks he may have been flashed by a speed camera  :D

Ok yes it was me, and I feel stupid because I knew it was there. The thing is though, the lines on the road were on the other lane (single carriage A road) and I was only doing about 3 mph over the 50 mph speed limit. So what are ther odds on me receiving a NIP?

Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining, if you can't do the time don't do the crime and all that. I'm just asking out of curiosity. (1 week to go before I find out!)

FZS600 Fazer / Weird noise under acceleration
« on: 07 April 2015, 12:15:17 am »
I've noticed an odd noise which only happens under acceleration. It's a sort of hissing whirring sound a bit like a dry bearing. It can get quite loud. I noticed the chain was slack but haven't run the bike since tightening it. The bike's only done 14k.

FZS600 Fazer / Sprocket Nut
« on: 01 April 2015, 04:40:43 pm »
I see from the Articles Section that there is or was a problem with the front sprocket nut. I have no idea whether anything has been done to my bike so I was thinking as a precautionary measure of buying a nut and locking tab from Wemoto as they're only a fiver. I presume the Wemoto nut is ok?

FZS600 Fazer / Changing the screen
« on: 26 March 2015, 02:09:20 pm »
Hi all

I'm thinking of changing the standard screen on my 98 FZS. While not as bad as a naked bike I seem to get an awful amount of buffeting at motorway speeds. Has anyone tired these?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Standard-Screen-Puig-Yamaha-slightly/dp/B00GA3AZN8/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1427378664&sr=8-14&keywords=fzs+600+screen.
The other alternative is a double bubble or maybe a flip top thingummy.

Introduction / Hi there
« on: 26 March 2015, 12:50:58 pm »
Hi All

Just bought a FZS600 1998 vintage with just 14k on the clock! Confirmed by the MOT certs, what do people buy a bike for ?

Anyway I live in Gloucester, I've got a 600 Divvy which I'm about to sell after replacing the engine because a piston rod broke. I've had a few different bikes over the years but only one at a time  :) . RS1100RS, ZZR600, another divvy, Z250, CG125 (makes sign of holy pushrods).
