When I took my cables off and fitted a fuel silencer, I think it's lost a little mid range but gained at the top.

It's not enough to know if this is real or just maybe me perceiving it differently, but the effect is minimal even if real.

On the other hand the bike now sounds amazing :D

Do you run a k&n air filter by any chance?

« on: 11 February 2015, 11:02:13 am »
Must admit I couldn't see the video on my phone so just going off comments.

I undertake all the time if I'm honest, on the M25 there's no end of muppets who almost form a queue behind some idiot, while there's a massive gap in lanes 1 and 2 (and even 3 now some sections are 4 lane).

I've travelled up lane 1 undertaking a line of cars in lane 4 with nothing else between us.
I can't see how that could be deemed careless, but must admit wouldn't practice it while a copper was about, but then I'd hope he'd be pulling over the cars for not using the left most lane.

Looking at it and reading the whole article, it wasn't just the undertake (which caused the driver in the middle lane to hit his brakes), but also him doing 95mph and then cutting across the traffic as well that got him the penalty,

Yep, the title is misleading.

Undertaking itself is not an offence (was removed from the traffic act a long time ago), but it's frowned upon so if you do do it, it needs to be in a safe manner to avoid this sort of thing.

If he'd of pulled into middle lane and crept ahead a few mph faster and then indicated safely etc etc then I doubt plod would have done anything, or at worst just given him a ticking off.

Doing it at 95mph and riding erratically through the lanes is what caused the careless driving offence.

Generally the police are ok with a little 'playful' riding if it's done sensibly, but get them on a bad day or be a dick about it and you can't really blame them.

For Sale & Wanted / Re: wanted: carb balancer
« on: 10 February 2015, 09:23:26 pm »
Yeah I've still got it, but also have a carbtune now.

It's by no means a carbtune of course and takes a little getting used to, but will do the job ok and reasonably accurate. Only does two cylinders at a time though so takes a few goes on 4 cylinder engines.

I would recommend getting one if you are likely to only need to sync the carbs rarely. If you're going to be doing them yourself regularly then definitely get a carbtune :)

I like the front half, but as with a lot of the dual sports, the rear looks like an after thought, and the plate holder looks hideous.

Don't mind it on the FZ1 strangely, but horrible on the tracer.

These are surprisingly ok for the price if you only ever balance once in a blue moon.

The filteration is every bit as good as OEM filters.

I'd be keen to see the independent testing for that claim, as there's plenty online showing they aren't.

They let more particulate through to achieve the higher flow rate, fact.

Most people are narrow minded with these as they've paid all that cash and don't want to admit to themselves.

I've tried both in cars and bikes and kept an open mind, and went back to stock.

As I say, each to their own, but no point offering 'advice' on unfounded claims or non-independent testing.

The reason they don't need washing for that long is they dont filter the air that well.

High flow is always a trade off with filtration efficiency.

A stock filter in good condition allows more than enough air through with good filtration of fine particles, and won't end up running lean if you haven't tuned your carbs.

But of course just my opinion, each to their own :)

In my experience, k&n's are only worth it if you're tuning the bike to use one.

I've put them on stock bikes (and cars) before and they make no difference. Most people 'perceive' a difference due to the money they've just spent.

Also, rather than changing filters in the future, you have to clean it. It's your choice whether that's a benefit or a chore.

I personally don't fit them now and stick with standard filters.

Having saying is no good unless you consciously consider what you're saying each time, otherwise it's just the brain operating parrot fashion without actual thought. If it helps then fair enough, guess each person needs to find what works best for them.

Sounds like old ideas with just rebranding.

They talk rubbish about it being a new idea, it was just called riding defensively before. A car at a junction may pull out so you ride accordingly (defensively).

Having to say out loud 'can go will go' has just used up your time to make the decision.

For the cost those bullet lights are a bit rubbish, you can get Cree LED spots for a similar price off Amazon or fleabay with much brighter lighting.

Agree with the above recommendations, either crimp properly or solder and insulate. Those easy type fittings will most likely fail in years to come and cause issues trying to locate the problem.

I test rode a Z1000SX before buying the FZ1.

Was a nice bike, but the one I rode had vibration through the bars and didn't give me the thrill the fax did.

They should just chemically adjust ciggies to cause permanent sterility so these people aren't adding to the population.

Motobatt is a good choice too, and its yellow!  :lol
I just went with a motobatt, great batteries and really like the fitting options with extra posts for accessories if needed :)

I've only bought a brand new bike once and not sure I'd bother again for this reason. The moment you ride it off the forecourt it's getting wear and tear and you have to accept that.

Buying second hand already has it 'worn in' and you're not so bothered. Also the related depreciation has passed.

I have the Zumo 390 too and it is a great unit. I fitted a touratech locking mount though so it's fixed in place and you don't have to worry about it flying off or being pinched while you pay for petrol etc.

Pricey but they are excellent bits of kit. The twisty roads option is genius :)

FZ6 / Fazer / Re: Voltage at the battery
« on: 09 January 2015, 02:12:38 pm »
True, and is technically better, but a bit overkill for a simple cheap voltmeter.

Mine off the sidelights is about 0.3 volts difference to the actual battery, which is fine to indicate issues and I know the offset either way. I can live with that error and save the hassle of wiring in a relay.

Ideal if you have a live off a relay already plumbed in though.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: fuel stabilizer
« on: 09 January 2015, 09:37:19 am »

Yep, you missed something, the OP asked about stabilizers and Activ8 was suggested, albeit incorrectly as that is not what it is designed for.
Then you randomly made a comment about my petrol going off, not sure where that came from, 'cos I never mentioned it?  :rolleyes

Actually you said Activ8 was just oil, not used for the oil, so the inference was it was still a fuel stabiliser due to the thread title. But we could be pedantic all day long so I'll leave it there ;)

In short, what the above link is saying is that chemicals are always trying to find their most stable form. For fuel we don't want that as it needs to be relatively unstable for it to work the way it does.

The 'stabiliser' helps slow this effect, but will ultimately not stop it long term, but can also help reduce gums and varnishes forming. This isn't such an issue if you put Super in though as it contains the extra additives anyway :)
