Check the connections at the switch, they are prone to corrosion, often just a clean up will do
In the sump pan, left hand side of the engine below and in front sprocket, it's the only thing with wires coming out of it
it only lights up when the starter button is pressed. To test it, turn off the kil switch and press the starter.

The self test, does not test the switch, just the bulb.Yeah, tried that, still didn't work.
If your sure the connections are both tight and corrosion free, the bulb if working check the wiring continuity and test the switch, as it's possible the wiring has broken/sorted and corrosion has penetrated into the switch. Its a very simple system, it will be one or a couple of the above.
