Brake calipers
« on: 26 December 2011, 10:31:39 pm »
The front brake calipers fitted to my Fazer seem to be different to those I've seen on others. The "blue pots" seem different. Mine are light blue with the inside bit natural aluminum whilst the others I have have seen are darker blue all over.

Is this normal or have they come from another bike? Always wondered....

Thanks,

Fuzzy

Here's a pic showing them. In case you're wondering I'm not in the habit of parking my bike like this! Pushed over by a drunk, as were all the other bikes down my street. Best pic I have of the brakes.

it is possible that someone has rubbed the blue spots down as they do fade with time,my fazer 1000 ones have faded on the right side caliper as you can see in this pic of my bike

They are off the earliest (1996/1997) Thundercat / Thunderace bikes, someone has swapped them over for some strange reason

They are a bit faded but are definately different... guess they must have come off a Thundercat or Thunderace as you say. Is that the only difference between them?

Thanks for shedding light on this  :)

I forget which way this goes but some blue spots have external pipe linking the 2 halves of the caliper casting, others have internal link. Some have flat/flush hose fitting, some on an angle. Sometimes you can get away with the wrong ones depending on your bike & the hose's. The silver inner with blue surround must indicate one of the above but I can't say which.  :\

Yes, the lower pipe thingy on the caliper is also a dead giveaway - it isnt needed on the later calipers. Have read somewhere that the design is less efficient than the later ones, but I had a go on an old Thundercat years ago & the brakes were impressive.

Someone has swapped over the calipers for some bizarre reason, if it were me if they work fine I could live with them but there are loads of newer ones on ebay if you want to put her back to standard.

Thanks for the replies  :) . Looks like they are the earliest incarnation of the blue pot calipers. They've given me a bit of trouble, an overhaul has helped but they seem to need bleeding frequently.

Out of interest I wonder if the later silver & other coloured (gold?) pot calipers fit? The non radial ones at least look very similar.

Yes, they should all be the same, check with vendor that bolt mounting points are 100mm from centre to centre.
Gold ones look nice but seem to sell for the most, blues are cheapest but silver would match your bike best :-)
