It's...... best explanation is from their website:

'There are many reasons why people attend, but for one day in October it is an opportunity for people to unite as one and remember those that have given their lives in conflict and can no longer ride by our side'

The website address is: http://www.rttw.org/

Or just Google: Ride To The Wall

I went on it last year, along with a few of my mates.

Fazersharp looks that way so both the Marshall at services and at the arboretum lknow what to expect with staggered starts an all that.
Edit: I'll join on route 2 (not 5) from woodhall services in Sheffield. Anybody else from north Yorkshire?

It was ace . I met some great people and ended up riding all the way down from North Scotland on my wee 600 fazer as I stuffed my big bike the weds before!
As ever the fazer never missed a beat even riding down for 8 hours in heavy rain - some times I forget how good this bike is , I tend to use it as my winter bike these days but I had a hoot riding it down.
