the yellow and blue should be your pick up coil wires so definatly repair the blue one if you exposed any bare wire

if this turns out to be the fault (and as the only sign of ever heating was the dreaded red light)
this is a perfect example of how hard it can be to diagnose a problem only over the internet/phone/email etc

but like you say its best to do some of those jobs and check them over - at least you have a service book
all i got with my fazer was a cuppa and some questions on how to lower his trike
(just found out he might not have even sent the registration paperwork lol)

no worries mate i forgot to measure mine aswell and what a ball ache -i made my own vacuum pump in a way that i dont show in the video because it is just unsafe for human consumption (i cant describe how without opening up to rude jokes) - mine actually seem a bit long to be honest but if i do a front end swap it might be to my advantage
https://youtu.be/p2fBH8BaOnw (if i just posted this then it might not be online)

what a pain in the arse that was
if i did it the old fashioned way i would have been fine but decided to use my old 'one man bleed system'
after a lot of messing around and nothing going to plan i found out it was broken doing it the old fashioned way it went great
 - will invest in one of those vacuum systems at some point

As a precaution I would change the thermostat, they are easy enough to fit and rules out one possible source of your problem.
Sh*t i forgot to write that

its not the ignition switch as the dash lights are still on and the oil/fuel light come on it is a warning to a switch issue

clutch switch only effects starting when in gear and wont cut an engine out
sidestand switch will cut out an engine when put down
kill switch will cut out an engine when 'killed'

im putting a fiver on the sidestand switch as it goes to normal after a few mins and no one ever thinks of sidestand switches while F-ing and blinding at a bike that wont start (yep me included) yet it gets the most stress as it gets all kinds of road crap flying at it and sticking to grease

i was tempted to go with the fuel exhaust as i could pick it up as im down there every other weekend
but realised i would have to carry the bugger all the way home so just went with blackwidow

there could be a couple of problems here not just one because its winter so you shouldnt be having overheating problems when riding
best to take a day to check a few things at once to ensure your cooling system is tip top
1, pump flow by opening the drain screw and starting engine (keep your legs clear it sprays) then top up
2, radiator clogging - just remove top hose then bottom hose and if you only get a slow drizzle then there is your problem (flush it)
3, fan switch, need an ohmeter for this one and an old pan (check the manual how to do this)

personally i think this sounds like a coolant flow issue because its winter so the fan should rarely come on - unless city commuting

if your lucky it is just an air lock and you wont find a problem it will just mysteriously be fixed once you do a coolant swap
if its a bit of a bugger then its a blockage it could be a coolant issue or it could be water type ie hard water (or both) just flush it
if your really really unlucky the impeller fans might be bust, but this is worst case rare scenario and easy to check once everything else is done

how to test the water pump
open the drain screw and crank up the engine for a second or two
you will be able to tell the difference

ok so a quick look around turns out the blanked one would be a startup/enrichening jet
originally found this out looking at pics of a mikuni bsr36 (we have bsr33 so close enough)
that says choke to me so i got more intrested because its blanked off
found this http://www.xj4ever.com/inside%20your%20carbs.pdf
and i can say i have no bloody idea further than its blanked off now so it can stay blanked off

also have a look at your sidestand switch give it a clean and make sure it operates fully

i was going to use a very similar saying in a upcoming video
would you trust not making a life with a 5 year old 'Rubber'
do you want to trust your own life with 5 year old Rubber ?

just replace them and get the best out of your ride while you can - use the old ones up and down the road while getting things setup but get it booked in for a tyre swap - i buy my own online and take them down the garage myself as it saves me a few quid as obviously garages charge to remove the wheels.

i have been using one similar to this for years
http://r.ebay.com/tzMyJV
i have had it break on me but i was lifting something much heavier than i should have been and did sit on it when it broke
im guessing this is the type you mean still use it today after a quick weld and it lifts the fzs without a problem or even a hesitation by myself

Have a search on here as there are a few posts about it and if you put it on without any swearing then you have not put it on properly

Thanks mate, i found a thread and i got it back on the right way, and yeah there was a few buggers and c***s in there haha

now you have learned the hard way to put it on do you want to see the easy way lol

i will say also check the Race organisers (pdmcc for example) rules aswell as for some unknown reason some tracks/clubs have rules that are not in the ACU handbook (it sounds nuts i know but thats racing)
if you think the ACU handbook is too big to read what ever you do dont get into rallying the MSA is larger and much harder to read
