For Sale & Wanted / CORTECH GX-AIR JACKET
« on: 24 August 2022, 08:12:15 am »
The best jacket I've ever worn on a bike for summer riding. :)

Vented ballistic mesh, leather reinforcement to all contact areas ... not that this has ever been tested, you understand. ;)

Mine is one of the earlier type shown here:  https://www.motorcyclegear.com/street/underwear_visibility_and_misc_/accessories_for_jackets_and_pants/cortech_by_tour_master/gx_air_mesh_motorcycle_jacket.html

Cortech continued to make them with minor style changes over the years and it was ever-popular in the USA.

Chest 42", silver-grey/black.  Still in very good condition and comes with both liners; one is wind/waterproof, the other is purely thermal.

Happy to let it go for £20 plus postage (estimate £12 - £15) just to know that it's still one the road, even if I'm not. :)

PM for more details.

Cheers!

As shown here:  https://www.fc-moto.de/en/Revit-Airwave-2-1

Mine are the light grey ones, 34" waist, worn about a dozen times, mostly for trips to the MOT centre in Spain.

£60 plus postage, which should be around £10.

PM with e-mail address if you'd like more info.

Akrapovic titanium oval end can with stainless steel link pipe.  The latter is very rare as Akrapovic stopped making them some years ago.  Accepts all 60 mm outlet cans.

As my Fazer 1000 is up for sale, the rare Akrapovic titanium end can and link pipe are up for sale.  The link pipe is impossible to buy from Akrapovic these days as they discontinued the line some years ago.

Supplied with Akrapovic retention springs, carbon clamp and stainless bolt.

Accepts all end cans with 60mm internal diameter.

Total weight of the can and link pipe is less than 2 1/2 kgs, lighter than any other option on the market.  Both are in excellent condition.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Help Please - Cooling Fan Not Working
« on: 02 March 2020, 05:58:08 pm »
As anyone who knows me knows, I hate troubleshooting electrical problems, so I'm appealing for help. :)  I’ve already hit the Search function which helped me with steps to investigate but a solution has eluded me so far.

Bike is a 2002 Gen 1, 53k miles.  Yesterday I started her up just to circulate fluids and make sure all was well before advertising her for sale.  Last time ridden was a couple of weeks ago and all was fine then.

On start-up, I’m 99% sure that the coolant fan came on as it usually does soon after starting.  Went off with gear selection and I then proceeded to hold the revs around 3k rpm and blip the throttle to get the motor up to temperature.  Usually when I do this I let the coolant get to around 90C and then turn off but this time I decided to let her run to check that the fan came on when the temp reached 98 - 99C.  It didn’t.  The Multigauge coolant temp continued to climb to 104C at which point the coolant overheat light came on - as it should - and I shut her down.

Today I started troubleshooting by applying 12v direct to the fan.  It works fine.

The fan fuse is good.

Applying 12v to the relay contacts I got a ‘click’ suggesting it’s working correctly.  I also substituted another relay and that made no difference to the fan operation. I’m calling the relay itself good.

Earthing the green/black terminal on the relay connector turned the fan on, suggesting the wiring from relay to the fan is OK.

The temperature readings on the Multigauge were exactly as they’ve been since I fitted the gauge.  Coolant temp rose normally and the overtemp light came on as it should at an indicated 104C.  This suggests that the coolant temp sensor in the thermostat housing is also good.

The coolant overtemp light comes on briefly at ignition on as it should.

However, the fan no longer comes on soon after start with the revs held at 1500rpm plus and the coolant fan does not kick in when the temp reaches 98 - 98C.

I’m stumped at the moment and the only thing I haven’t checked yet is the combination unit in the speedo which should be activating the fan relay when the temp gets too high.  I believe it also has a timer function to run the fan at start-up.

Any ideas, experiences, hail Mary guesstimates would be much appreciated. :)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Time To Say Goodbye
« on: 26 January 2020, 05:05:07 pm »
Not to this forum, I hasten to add but sadly to my Fazer 1000.  :(

After almost 18 years of ownership, it's time to say 'goodbye' to the old girl.  Truth is that with all the motorhome touring we've done over the past 3 years, the bike has only done about 500 miles in that time.  Since we're continuing to spend 5-6 months on the road each year, it just doesn't make sense to keep taxing and insuring her for such minimal use.

In addition, the Spanish MOT test equivalent, the ITV, is such a PITA to pass unless the bike is in stock condition.  Almost all of the mods I'd done over the years had to be reversed to pass the test and it was always such a hassle even after doing that.  So, I've spent the past couple of days putting her back to near standard condition ready for another run at the ITV and then she'll be up for sale.

I've also gone through all my Fazer spares stocks that I'd accumulated and those will be advertised soon in Sales and Wants here.  A couple of special items will be an Akropovic titanium oval end can and a rare DPBMC blue (the fastest colour ever!) fuel tank with the Yamaha tuning fork logo rather than the YAMAHA lettering.  The latter was never available in the UK and Akrapovic no longer do the link pipes for the Gen 1 - but I've got one in perfect condition!

Sorting through everything and going through photos taken since 2002 brought home just how many mods and changes the bike has undergone.  Four different end cans (Blueflame SS oval, Blueflame titanium Tri-oval, MIVV GP carbon and then the Akrapovic, which included full 4-2-1 headers for a few years); K-tech forks, R1 forks, K-tech forks again but with SS20 cartridges.  A K-tech modded standard shock (mine was the prototype for this mod), a Technoflex shock, an Ohlins and then an R6 shock (nice one, Luke! :))

Bodywork changes include 4 different screens, 2 huggers, an MBD belly pan, colour-matched side panels, and three different seats.  I've had straight bars and Renthals; Pazzo levers, bar end mirrors and Oberon footpegs.  I also had alloy rearsets for a time.

Brake discs were changed to Armstrong wavy discs and there were at least 3 sets of stainless hoses to accommodate the various fork set-ups, along with an R1 radial master cylinder up front.

Of course, there had to be a Multigauge in the list - an early addition, one of the first made, and needless to say, every variation of Ivan's jet kit mod.  This started with an original Slip-On kit which I brought back from the USA in 2002 before they were even available in the UK.  When the MB kit came out, I upgunned to that along with the necessary airbox lid and intake stub mods.  With the Akrapovic full system, she absolutely flew! :)

It goes without saying that putting her up for sale with so much history between us is a real wrench.  Luckily, I've still got my '99 R1 which I've been keeping SORN'ed for the last couple of years and I can always put that one back on the road if I feel the need for speed in the future.  For now, though, I'll be taking a riding sabatical but I'll keep the riding gear in good nick, just in case.  I know so many guys who've sold up completely, only to regret it a year or two later. ;)

As always, I'll be staying in touch on this forum and while I tend to go 'radio silent' during our travels, it's rare that I fail to check on the site most days.

I'll post again when the list of items for sale goes live.  We'll be driving back to the UK in April and I'll bring everything over with me to post in the UK then.

Cheers!

Mike

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Wanted - Standard Gen 1 Handlebars
« on: 15 October 2018, 04:01:41 pm »
Now there's a thread title you never thought you'd see ...  :lol
However, I'm asking because the Spanish MOT-equivalent test regs have changed yet again (doh!!) since May this year and it now appears that they will only test a vehicle that appears to be completely standard.  Any aftermarket parts will only be considered if you can provide EU-type approval documentation for them.

It doesn't matter that a vehicle has previously passed import tech inspection - as was the case with my much-modded Fazer - the new regulations apply retrospectively.  My mate, Dave, was refused a test for his '04 Gen 1 this afternoon and between us we are having to acquire the parts needed to put the bikes in standard trim for the bi-annual tests.

Mine is pretty much stock now and I have it arranged so that I can swap out the non-standard parts (indicators, end can, levers and screen) in an hour or so.  Seems I'll now have to change bars (Renthals technically aren't for road use, so no EU-type approval) which is why I need an original set to fit when the time comes around.  I will probably have to lose the R1 radial front brake master cylinder and the Armstrong wavy discs, too.  Grrrr ... bloody Spanish bureaucrats!
Anyway, back to the point, has anyone got a set of original bars they would like to sell, please?  I'll be back in the UK a couple of times before December so would be looking to have them posted to our UK address.
Cheers!
Mike

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / I am Fazer, hear me roar.
« on: 14 October 2018, 04:00:06 pm »
... well, eventually. ;)
Hi all,
It's been a while since I've posted and - confession time - even longer since I've ridden the Fazer.  Well, ridden anything apart from a golf buggy and an electric bike, to be honest. :)
As some may recall, the Soup Dragon and I have been touring Europe for a large part of the year in our motorhome and when we've been home in Spain during the summer months, it's been just too hot to ride.  As a result, the mighty Thou has stood silent for months both this year and last. :(

Having had to deal with blocked pilot jets after last year's lengthy lay-up, I thought this year I'd preempt that issue by draining the carbs instead.  Mistake.  It might be fine on a newer bike but on an older one like mine, leaving the carbs empty for 6 months caused the float needle seat O-rings and one float bowl gasket to completely dry out.  The motor started fine but within minutes fuel was leaking from all over the place under the carbs.  Luckily I had spare parts to hand but on balance, it would have been easier to simply clean blocked pilot jets than fix the leaks.  Lesson learned for next year.
Typically, the moment the mighty Thou fired up leak-free and ready to roll, the heavens opened and stopped play for the day.

Oh, well ... after 6 months, I suppose another day or two won't make that much difference. :)

Cheers, all!
Mike
PS.  I have been visiting the forum regularly but hate 'typing' on a tablet, which is why I haven't posted much while we've been travelling.  I'm lurking, though ... ;)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / All Good Things ...
« on: 03 March 2018, 08:16:24 am »
... you know the rest of the saying ... and after much thought and consideration, I've decided to call a halt to my UK 'Ivanising' trips.

It was a difficult decision to make but finding time for them since quitting my day job has proved harder than when I was working 48 weeks of the year.  Now that Lynn and I finally have the chance we hope to spend many months each year travelling extensively.  With family visits to fit in around our motorhome adventures, suddenly there aren't that many spaces left on the calendar.  It seems it's true what they say about being busier than ever in retirement. :) Asking owners to travel to my work location during the UK winter months is a non-starter and the travel costs in the summer are too high for me to come over for just a handful of bikes.  I don't like to admit it but I'm no longer up to doing 16 Full Monty installations in 4 days, with 600 miles in a rental car between venues. ;)

However, the most significant factor in my decision wasn't the age and condition of the mechanic but that of the bikes themselves. :)  I still find it hard to believe that the last Gen 1 rolled off the line almost 13 years ago and most of the bikes I've worked on have been older than that.  No matter how well they are maintained and cared for, corrosion and other age-related issues are appearing more regularly.  I can only travel with a limited selection of tools and my biggest concern is that I might encounter a problem which I can't fix without more specialized kit.  The last thing I would want is to have someone stranded having ridden many miles to get to my work venue.  Thankfully that has never happened but the odds have increased to the point where I no longer feel it fair or sensible to take that risk.  Since it's not feasible for me to do individual home visits or to set up a properly equipped workshop in the UK, it's clear that it's time for me to hang up my much-faded overalls. :)

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has trusted me to work on their Fazer over the years, and a very special thank you to those who provided me with a workshop, sometimes a bed, delicious bacon butties and countless cups of tea and coffee on my travels.  It was your hospitality and kindness that made these trips possible.  Since doing my first Slip On kit installation in 2003, I've had the pleasure of meeting many hundreds of Foccers from all corners of the UK and it was a wonderful experience to see how one machine could bring folks together from every walk of life.  Great times all round.  :)

My heartfelt thanks to you all.

For Sale & Wanted / TCP Undertray for Fazer FZS1000 - DPBMC
« on: 17 August 2017, 05:24:01 pm »
For sale, TCP Aerodynamics undertray for FZS1000 in DPBMC (fastest) blue.  Good condition overall.  The mounting lug for the rear brake reservoir cracked so I fitted an HRC tube-type reservoir instead.  This is included in the sale together with the mounting bracket for the indicators and number plate.

Looking for £60 including shipping to UK mainland address.  Apologies for the less than informative photo but I'm away from home and it's the only one of my bike I could find online. :)

More info and a small photo on page 11 of this old TCP catalogue pdf:
