Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / value clearance check at 25000
« on: 08 August 2021, 11:35:49 am »
Hi, the bike has reached 25000 and my question is do I really need to have the valves checked?
Money is a bit tight at the moment and I could do a small service my self,  but the valve check is way beyond me.How critical is it to do the check?
Can I wait till next year ( I am only doing less than1000 miles a year)The mechanic doing the job is unhelpful and non committal.I understand many will say it is important to follow Yamaha service schedules.
Just wanted to know what are peoples experience with the valve check and how many have had to do any adjustments.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / AIS Removal
« on: 05 August 2021, 04:28:51 pm »
Hi,it is that time, 25000 mile service.
Spoke to my mechanic before covid and he was going to get everything needed to remove the AIS system,  now he says I have to get what's needed and is not being very helpful.
Looking on Pat's page he shows what he calls a carb intake boot which blanks the hole in the carb, unfortunately I can not find it on Fowlers Yamaha parts list, any Idea what the part number is and how to get one?Any idea what to do about the hole in the air box?Is there any thing else I need. The mechanic is going to crimp the ends of the tubes so don't need the bolts to fill the holes in the engine.
How important is it to have the valves checked at 25000 miles,  can I wait a few or thousands miles? It would certainly help me out at the moment as the bill is not going to be cheap.
Do you do a oil change at the same time as the valve check.? Because if I can get away with out the valve check I will do a oil change and small service  my self.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / AIS removal kit
« on: 15 January 2020, 08:15:47 pm »
It is getting near that time. The bike is getting very near 24000miles, so will need the valve shims checked in a few months time.
I will not be doing the work my self. The mechanic who is doing the work says there is not much point putting back the AIS system and will obviously increase the price of the job.He has done the shim job many times he says and he usually just crimps the the pipes and thinks this is quick and easy .He has fitted the screws that need tapping first,  but thinks crimping is best.Where can I get a Ais removal kit from?
Is crimping any good?Having looked at the site there is a lot of information and some one on this site  used to make a kit, but it was a few years ago.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Rear wheel alignment
« on: 06 August 2019, 11:28:25 am »
Having tightened my chain the other day I was wondering how accurate the swing arm chain markings are? There seems to me to be to many variables with the manufacturer and welding etc for the markings to be accurate.
Having looked on line for a tool to check for  wheel alignment l was surprised by how many and how different there  are out there. The laser tool looks like the best, but at around £70 it is out of my price range.  l did find tools around £5 , but not sure if they work ,soIs it worth the bother of even buying a tool? Are the alignment marks close enough not to worry about it.Is there  a simple and easy option to check alignment.Does the wheel being slightly being out of alignment really matter?

Having seen  a recent advert for a FZS 1000 in a bike shop described as a "future classic " , just wondering   what you think?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / New brake pads.
« on: 31 August 2018, 12:06:53 pm »
Had to fit a new set of EBC HH pads. Mechanic found one side of front was all most down to the limit,  but other side seemed ok ??Easy fit and did not take long. Been out and gently been using the brakes. The pads seem to be binding on the discs  and when you push the bike about my drive I can feel the resistance. Is this normal? Will it settle in with use, or have I fitted them wrong?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Time for new chain and sprockets?
« on: 02 August 2018, 05:01:00 pm »
I think it is time for new chain and sprockets.I bought the bike with 15000 miles and now done 22000.The bike had a tight spot when I got it and it just got worse, although the sprockets look ok the tight spot is bothering me as it is very loose else were.
I have cleaned and lubed regularly. On inspection I noticed that there are a few o rings missing and believe this to be the problem.
So a new chain set I think is in order,  but what to buy?
O ring? X ring? Heavy duty?  extra heavy duty? Gold ?and what make?
Any idea's and where to buy from as I hear there are a lot fake and cheap Chinese crap out there, and one final question, do you really need the Yamaha silent front sprocket?  is there a difference?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / sump plug cock up.
« on: 07 May 2018, 11:58:57 am »
Hi ,changed my oil last year for the first time on the FZS 1000 my self, decided to use a after market off EBay  magnetic sump plug .
The threads on the plug are not as long as standard plug, and when I changed my oil this morning I have found that it has ripped out the first few threads in the sump and obviously my old plug will now not start because of damaged threads!!!!
What the he'll do I do now?
Any ideas?
What is the size of the plug?
Can I retap  as there are still plenty of threads left?
What size tap would I need?
The bike is in my garage so it is stuck there.
Any help or advice would be gratefully received, thanks.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / 05 FZS 1000 catalytic converters
« on: 25 August 2017, 02:10:31 pm »
Hi, I have a 05 model which I believe has a cat fitted.  05 was the only  year that one was fitted and a change to the ECU.
I am told it is fitted in the down tubes as the 4 go in 1 where the link pipe fits. I am told it is small and very simple design with no lampbard sensor fitted.
My bike is a American import but again all 05 have the cat fitted, so they should  be no difference.
Looked in the Haynes manual but there is no mention of it, does any one know any thing about them? Are they worth taking out?can they be taken out?how easy is it to do? What is changed in the ECU? Will they be a power difference?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Bridgestone BT021 front tyres issue
« on: 23 June 2017, 06:28:31 pm »
I know people on here have mentioned before about issues with the 021 front but what are the issues?
Been ringing around for tyres prices and mentioned that I had 021 to my local guy and he said it is a known problem but did not go into detail.
As I mentioned in my other post about Avon storm 3D Xm my  Fzs has front end problems and 021 with strange wear.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Avon storm 3D XM tyres
« on: 23 June 2017, 03:38:34 pm »
Hi having a issue  with the handling with the FZS ,the front feels odd, sorry that is not a correct term but it is hard to describe.
The front feels  like it is moving  about and tram lines to. Feels unstable  and I am rapidly  loosening confidence  in the bike.
I have Hyperpro springs and 10 oil,R6 shock with Luke's setting.
The tyres  are Brigestone 021. They where on the bike when I bought it last year  and where almost  new. I have now done nearly  5000 miles on them and have noticed  the front  is wearing odd,the right side has what feels like a ridge slightly off centre, but the left side seems normal,I know  the 021 have a issue  with the front does any one else have any knowledge of the issue?
I am going  to change  tyres and have seen a offer on line for Avon storm 3D XM for£153 delivered I know  when it comes to tyres every one has some thing to say but the offer ends tomorrow and money is a bit tight at the min.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Irregular tickover
« on: 09 May 2017, 08:40:16 pm »
I have had my FZS 1000 for over a year now and the tick over seems very Irregular. Tried adjusting it a few times, but does not seem to help.
The bike is a 05 with 19500 miles k&n filter and slip on exhaust, not ivanised.
On Sunday  had to lift the tank to reroute my sat nav cable, and while  there checked the throttle position sensor and that was set correct.
The bike sounds like  it's hunting with the revs never still.
Is this  normal?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Has any one done the mirror mod?
« on: 09 March 2017, 10:46:58 pm »
Looking  at the American  Fz1, site came across a mod to make the mirrors more  user friendly. They swop the mirrors  over, which lowers them and widens them , giving  a much better  rear view and less of your  elbows. Also  they say it cuts down  on wind noise.
Has anyone one tried it?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / How much is your FZS 1000 worth?
« on: 08 March 2017, 03:23:57 pm »
I have just  seen a 2004 FZS  1000 with 17000 miles and 4 owners  in beautiful  nick on eBay from a dealer  for £3800, is he having  a laugh?

My insurance  is coming  up for renewal,  I always  tell my insurance  company  everything  about  my bike. Having  talked  to my mates I was surprised  to hear that many of them don't mention  any mods to there bike like aftermarket  exhaust system, suspension etc. My mechanic  says that the price of a aftermarket  exhaust system  is a lot cheaper  than a OEM one so why tell them as the performance  is not a big difference.  I have a R6 shock  and a aftermarket  exhaust system so will tell them, but from experience you have a right  job trying  to explain  to a sales  person  what you have and why you fitted it, and half  the time it does not fit in side there nice  little box of rules.Just wondering  how many of you getting on and how  much  you tell them. No I do not work  for a insurance company.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / 4 degree ignition advancer are their worth fitting?
« on: 17 September 2016, 04:25:16 pm »
I have has a few problems starting the FZS, properly more down to me than the bike. I have been told the advancer might help, and it would hopefully help the midrange. I find when I want to over  take a car I have to go down a lot of gears, and than it still feels a bit flat.I am used to torkey twins and a GSXR 750, so may be asking to much of the Fzs.
I am hopeing to get the bike Ivanised in the spring, so do Ivansing and advancer go together, or should I just wait till the spring?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / oil change. oil level?
« on: 13 September 2016, 10:04:08 pm »
Hi I changed the oil and filter using Silkolene super 4, 10_40 and K&N filter on my 05 FZS 1000 for the first time on Sunday. The owner be for me I was told changed the oil and filter shortly before I bought the bike in March. When the bike was cold the oil in the window was completely covered, and when hot and left on the centre stand for a few minutes was above the high mark.
After leaving the oil to drain for 4 hours, I but 3 litre in as it says in the book.Been out to day ,when I got back but bike on main stand waited a few minutes the level was half way between low and high mark. Waited 2 hours ,still in the same place.
Have I done some thing wrong? I was very careful to measure the 3 litres.
Not sure if it is me but the bike seems to be going a lot better, picks up much better and the gear box seems slicker.
Should I but more oil in? What is the best level? High mark, or in the middle? The oil warning level light did not come on during my ride.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / LED indicators
« on: 18 August 2016, 09:58:10 pm »
I am hoping to fit a set of LED indicators to my Gen 1. I know I need to fit a different relay or resistors, but which is the best way to go? Is the relay easy to get, and where is it on the bike?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Comfortable seat
« on: 07 May 2016, 05:26:21 pm »
Went for a 200 mile ride on Wednesday to the coast. Rode 100 mile non stop and got off the bike and felt OK,stopped half way back for fuel and then started to feel very uncomfortable. The pain in the bum just got worse and worse and buy the time I got home was in agony. Any ideas of finding a cure or is it more trips to the chiropractor.
