Back home this afternoon a little earlier than usual so as there was some light left I cracked on again with seeing if I could get the front timing belt sorted. 20 minutes later and its all timed up correctly and reassembly has begun :D

I have a new clutch kit arriving in the next day or two, but that's a piss easy job. Need to re-attach a few covers, try to find a few lost bolts I've left somewhere and then offer the engine back up the car.

Once that is done, clean up the new gearbox and reinstall and then the might ZS should be back on the road :D

When you're pisssi g about u derneath the car do you ever think ih shit the chassis is a bit rotten or whatever......not saying that it is but genuinely curious coz on my old golf.....well it wasnt bad bad....but it wasnt good either....the ZS is slightly more modern......where were those MG's manufactured and how thick is the metal and how dothe floor pans and sills look up clise and personal.

Before i got my type-r i had a few grand saved up and was gonna get a big bore performance engine from some place in Sommereset fitted but i buckled nd went for new car............but im always windering what if.......and will my modern made car stand the test of time...

Any thoughts?

My 2000 206 is very tidy, very little rust at all (although the jack up point is a bit focced). Amazing how many advances have been made in the fight against corrosion.

The things you learn at Uni - did you know that in London (and other major cities), there was a genuine problem with lamp posts failing down due to corrosion at the base? The eventual culprit: doggies taking a widdle against them! The acidity and humidity of the pee sped up the corrosion process, ensuring the lamp posts were weakened, and eventually toppled!

It's mostly tidy, but you are right the floor pans need some attention. Light surface rust is appearing, so nothing too bad yet. My original plan (made 12 months or so ago) was to prep this and have the entire underbody wax oiled whilst the engine was out of the car. This job however will be outsourced to a garage as I don't have the space available where I currently live - I had never planned nor expected to be living in a flat.

The only other area of rust, is the centre section of the exhaust which as you know completely disintegrated. Once the car is back on the road, I will be organising a trip to an exhaust specialist where it will get replaced :) I got a quote for the entire system but the price of the manifolds was astronomical - £1,559. But a stainless steel cat-back system, with a lifetime guarantee was quoted at £359 from Longlife. They've got a good reputation on the ZS Forums so I figured I'd follow suit

My first Mk2 golf didn't have a single intact panel and as such was in very bad shape in regards to the body. I'm hoping the MG will last me many more years as I do enjoy driving it. It doesn't quite tick all the boxes that I would like for a car, but as a run-around it's solid and worth taking care of despite the rather atrocious fuel economy :P But I can live with that...

New clutch installed today, nice and easy job that took only 10 minutes this morning :)

I've managed to rope in Christo as an extra pair of hands to hopefully get the engine back in the car this Saturday :D

The roofbars for the 206 arrived today! Might fit them over the weekend, haven't decided yet.

They're the genuine Peugeot lockable bars for £50 off ebay. Not too shabby, really.

Had a sneaky trip to a Yam dealers and had a mooch at the MT07 & MT09.

Sitting on the 07 it feels like a toy compared to the FZ1.....i get the feeling you could really fling it about with ease.

The 09 looks far cooler though...there was one with blue annodised forks 8) .......& i love salesmen......you could have an MT09 for £100 a month via PCP.....bastard......why he have to go say that :lol ...........in the end though if i get a new bike it's so that i can keep it nice and long term whike knowing its history, not so that i keep changing it every 3 years and never own one.

But the MT07 i can have with a straight loan over 3 years......for £100 a month.........i mean that is good........i mean ive basically just lost that amount in a year by not buying the right thou......the money ive lost coulda been my whole first years payments. :(

Stealer recons he'll only give me £2350 for the thou now & thats including needing new tyres and impending mot......it aint allot.......plus i dont need a bike right now so its a bit pointless just to clear his stock.

Next year ill be looking at a £2k guaranteed trade in :eek ....mainly due the mileage being at 36k.

Still looking like next year before i do a deal, by then ill have got a fresh mot, new tyres, fresh oil and filter......so another few hundred quid spend, run it for a while to get some benefit and hopefully save up more deposit......if i can save up enough to make an MT07 circa £50 a month then that is throw away money really.

The Tracer slim?...yeh it's nice, well it's another clone....but i bet it rides nice.

An MT09 will be my lot though if it happens, it is perfect for my needs...as is the little 07.......but you know theres lots going on with bikes right now......for example maybe a few MT09 owners will now be tempted with a tracer instead....maybe sold on the engine but do touring...maybe the ones with money  will trade in their MT09's
For a Tracer and that migt give me a chance of a yamaha approved year old MT09 on finance. 8)

Well heres hoping anyway.

I love those roads :) ....& i enjoyed the A44 on the thou....but im a little fed up of my teeth being rattled out on less than perfect surfaces.

Fingers crossed Nick, if i knuckle down this winter and do some mega saving then an 09 could be mine maybe.....ill give you a shot if i get one.

It's a shame your view of the FZ1 has been coloured this way. I reckon there must be something seriously wrong with the suspension still, and wonder how you'd find a stock one if you tried one? You are the first person I have heard criticise them so harshly.

Yeh it has been pissed about with so much for track riding that it isnt enjoyable on small roads.

Ive maxed out the compression on the front shocks yet theres still too much travel left even with my fat carcass on it....they've been uprated too much & sometimes the rear is jarring.....but on the A44 which is quite smooth, big corners it is quite nice.

Speed is excellent, noise, looks, bling factor are all good but the overall riding experience just isnt there......i feel like im really trying to ride around its haarshness and that ill probably be far better & quicker on any smaller but normally specced up bike.....i've done over 6k miles on it now & im still not happy.

Slim is the man to try it out...much lighter than me and well used to his FZ1 now.

Well, I've got this leg, so I guess I can put this in this thread?

I took the plaster cast off a couple of days ago, a couple of weeks early, but it seems to be holding up well now, and I need to get it all working so I can get back to work. All very stiff, but a bit of physio seems to be doing the trick and can now bend it just past 90 deg. Desperate for a ride on the bike, but I don't reckon it's good enough for that just yet. Have driven the car ok though, and no longer using a crutch  :)

MG got a bit of lovin today as the engine is now re-attached to the chassis with help from Christo... despite his yammering and complaining about being tired, cold and ill etc etc

Had a bit of trouble getting the lower mount to line up properly, but after a few hours and much swearing it is now connected - had to attach the top mount first which I expect I'll have to take back off again to gain access to a few bolts that weren't dealt with previously.

I may get back out on it tomorrow, but I'll see what the weather has in store first and how my well my muscles have recovered

A very pleasant 130 mile ride to Bangor Pier and back on the XJ600. Sunny, mild, quiet roads. A couple of hours on the Pier, some food and coffees, and a chat with friends. All in all, a great day.

More work completed yesterday - had to disassemble the left hand mount again to get a few more bolts in place but the engine was much steadier today so was easier to work with. About 90% of the left of the engine bay is now reassembled :) Only a few tidy up bits left there

Hoping to clean up the gearbox and get it re-attached this weekend. I reckon the exhaust is going to be the biggest faff of all the jobs remaining but at least I don't have to worry too much since it will be replaced soon :)

I'm a little concerned that every time I think about this project I keep feeling like I've forgotten something :\
