General / Might be back soon...
« on: 12 March 2021, 09:29:01 pm »
Been a while, but now (post covid) I'm thinking of getting a FZ1.
Been riding a Honda NC750x for the last 6 or 7 years (easy commuter and 70MPG), but now I'll be mostly working from home with only a couple of day a week in the office, MPG isn't quite as important so something a bit more fun is in order :)

General / CBF125 manual
« on: 20 August 2017, 08:49:53 am »
Drew passed his CBT  :woot

So we got a CB125F 2012 plate (the day before) which I had to ride back from Frome to Bristol - first time on a 125 in almost 30 years lol

Nice little bike - desperately needs a service, so done oil etc already.

Anyone know where I can find a PDF copy of the manual?

General / Where did all the cheap bikes go?
« on: 21 June 2017, 07:21:59 pm »
Finally talked Drew into doing his bike test so decided to look for a cheap 125 - like I had. Paid about £100 for it.

Bloody hell - what happened to the prices?! The only 125 under £500 was a write off with bits missing. Most of 'em were over a grand!

My 50cc cost £85, The 125 cost about £110 and the 250cc was around £200!

General / Ground anchor - onna wall?
« on: 31 January 2015, 06:09:26 pm »
The new shiny thing needs a little more security that the old Fazer did, so have had a ground anchor in a box in the shed for the last 6 years.

Problem is at the new house, I'm a) garage less and b) the drive where the shiny lives is gravel. Now correct me if wrong but raw bolts in gravel don't work too good.

I know the obvious is to dig a big hole and fill it with concrete, but we're probably having the driveway done later in the year and I don't want to a) waste the money and b) (more importantly) have to dig it all out again in 6 months time.

So, the next best option is the 6 foot block wall next to us,

Would that be solid enough? Or would it be worth just using a heavy (circa M12) raw bolt hoop?

General / Servicing during warranty period
« on: 30 January 2015, 08:56:59 pm »
I know for cars you can take your new car to any qualified mechanic for it's service and they cannot legally refuse to honour the warranty.

Is the same true for motorbikes? I would assume so and would imagine any manufacturer having a hard time should it come to court...

General / I went and bought a red one...
« on: 16 January 2015, 09:00:40 pm »
Did the test ride today. The NC750 and the MT-07

The MT-07 was more fun to ride, but the bike is quite small and I'm not lol. Also the saddle isn't great and the indicators etc are awkward and fiddly.
The NC750 was a different ride - the engine gained nothing from revs, it has a constant torque all the way through the range. That took a bit of getting used to. It was also a more comfortable position.

So all in all it was a finely balances, each had it's good and bad points. In the end I went with the sensible option. 99.9% of my miles are to and from work so I went with the NC750. Got a good deal from the dealer - £600 for my old Fazer, plus accessories fitted for free with a couple of hundred off the bike.

So - it should arrive around the 28th. It'll be the first time I've ever owned a vehicle less than 10 years old!

Oh - and it's red lol

General / So, what's the old bike worth...?
« on: 12 January 2015, 06:47:39 pm »
Continuing on a changing bike theme, whats the old one worth?

The details:
Mk1 Fazer 600 S Reg (Jan 1999). Engine is good, new chain and sprockets + front tyre in 2014. Stainless steel downpipes, pure rust end can (original, leaks but always passes mot "Exhaust leaking but not excessively noisy"). Acumen Cat 1 alarm. Double bubble windshield. Oxford heated grips. Tatty givi rack (no box). Headlight mod.

About 50k miles.

No service history, but has everything done as needed and oil & filter changed every year (about 6k miles).

Dry miles only, except when it's raining.

Cosmetically it's in need of some TLC - a few scratches here and there etc.

No pic at the moment as it's dark and pissing down.

Not sure whether to part-ex it or sell private.

General / Time for a new bike...
« on: 10 January 2015, 05:36:10 pm »
I've had the fazer for 10 years now and at 16 years it's getting a little long in the tooth. Still runs well but getting scruffy.

So finally decide to get a new bike. That bit was easy. Deciding what to get isn't.

I've narrowed it down to two. Sensible vs Fun.

For sensible we have the Honda NC700X. Average 65MPG, excellent commute and service every 8000 miles. Zero miles on the clock and Honda finance at 4.9%and my old bike as deposit comes in at about £132 per month.

For fun we have the FZ8 - the bigger fazer. Nice familiar with oodles of power but only 40MPG. About 8k miles and with standard dealer finance probably similar to the Honda.

Sort of leaning towards the Honda, as I'm more interested in economy now.

Anyone have/tried either of these?

FZS600 Fazer / Sodding rear brake binding
« on: 20 May 2014, 08:12:54 am »
Rear break started binding on a month or so ago. I assumed it was the usual fazer brake issue, but when I had a look the pistons were clean. I tried to wind them back into the caliper with a piston tool but they wouldn't budge. It was only when I opened the bleed screws they went back. So all was well for two weeks or so and then they stuck again. So this time I took each piston out to check and they were clean as was the bore in the caliper. However, there was a small bit of rubber in brake fluid. So I order and fitted a new hose (still had the original one on and it's a '98 machine so it was getting on for 16 years!) and flushed the system out - including a few more small fragments of rubber. All seemed fine for a couple of week and then yesterday the ****ing thing stuck on again.

The only thing I noticed was when I took the pistons out they were difficult to push back into the caliper - should they be easy to move (with no fluid in and bleed valves open)?

Any suggestions?

Current plan is to re-visit the caliper on friday. I'll pop the pistons back out and pull the seals out (I have a new set), I may split the caliper to have a good look inside (my local bike parts shop stocks the internal o-rings).

FZS600 Fazer / Difficulty changing up gear
« on: 10 March 2014, 10:21:30 am »
This has been getting worse for some time and it's now getting to the point of making riding tricky...

Any common fazer issue cause this? I'm guessing worn selector forks.

Also - any recommendation on where to buy replacements (excluding ebay).

General / New chain time - bigger sprocket on the FRONT?
« on: 28 February 2014, 02:12:26 pm »
It's time for a new chain - the cheapo one I stuck on the old sprockets 3 years ago is approaching end of life.

So, I'm toying with the idea of putting a larger sprocket on the front.  :eek

I'm not interested in pulling wheelies or riding like a dick, I more interested in MPG's on the way too and from work so the loss of accelleration isn't a problem.

Anyone tried anything like this before? How much difference will it make to the ride/MPG etc?

General / And then one day....
« on: 05 November 2013, 09:39:46 pm »
... you suddenly realize 7 more years have gone by.

Not quite Pink Floyd but still.

For those who may remember, about 7 years ago I posted about my bankruptcy. Well, I was discharged after a year, then 6 years later it all dropped off the credit record. That was June this year. So overnight I went from a credit record like Greece, to a record like Germany.

Today, we exchanged contracts on our own home. It took 7 years but I'm now a home owner again. WHOOT!  :)

General / Building a garage
« on: 26 August 2013, 09:05:22 pm »
All I seem to do on here now is post questions on every subject apart from the sodding bike lol.

This time it's garages. We're about to buy a house and the question is cheaper without a garage and build one myself or more expensive with one ready made. Problem is I've no idea how much a garage costs; either just materials and self build or get a local builder to do the lot.

Anyone know what sort of figures we're looking at?

(p.s. on the subject of the bike - did the front disc the other day and every single nut came out a treat  :D )

General / Digital Camera (Cheap ones)
« on: 13 July 2013, 06:36:43 pm »
I'm looking to get a cheap digital camera - the £60 price mark.

I know sod all about the latest and greatest camera tech so I'm open to advice.

I know that optical zoom is better than digital.

I know that the more pixels the better the image quality, but above the 16 Mega Pixel mark I probably won't notice the difference.

Do I want a camera which takes AA batteries or one with Li-Ion cells? What else should I look for or avoid?

FZS600 Fazer / Won't start.
« on: 22 April 2013, 10:43:56 am »
Symptom - like the battery is flat - won't turn over/turns over very slow
Counter-symptom - lights are bright and don't dim when trying to start, battery on charge overnight
Other points - can hear starter solenoid clunking/engaging.

I can't decide if this a a duff battery (quite possible as it's old and been unreliable for some time), or an electrical issue (solenoid, corroded connections, starter brushes).

Any suggestions?

I haven't got a spare battery so can't test with jump leads etc.

General / Granny Dating
« on: 09 February 2013, 05:40:20 pm »
No - not for me  :rollin

My mother is 67 and been single now for some time. She keeps asking me to help her with dating site x or dating site y. A lot of the ones she suggest seem naff to me. or have a membership fee that's too high.

So, anyone else here got retired relatives and know of any "decent" sites if such a thing exists?

FZS600 Fazer / Starter gear/clutch
« on: 01 November 2012, 08:01:31 am »
Starter is starting to play up in the mornings so looks like it maybe needing attention soon.

Anyone done one of these? Any tips/gotchas etc

I don't think it's the motor - sounds like something jamming.

General / Blind Spot
« on: 31 October 2012, 08:01:33 am »
Why is it that every time I get a bike following me the pillock always rides directly behind me in the blind spot?

I had a prat with a loud exhaust following me this morning, I can hear him but not see him, so I moved position in the lane so I could keep him in the mirror. Guess what, me moved as well. Moron.

General / Bristol Foccers - Blanket 20MPH speed limit
« on: 17 September 2012, 08:51:08 pm »

I don't know if you've heard but the idiots at the council want to introduce a blanket 20MPH speed limit across Bristol. It's going to cost £2.3 million to do this. That money has come from a grant for sustainable transport.  BBC Link

If you think that money could be better spend improving cycle paths, pedestrian crossings, road junctions and traffic light sequences, then sign the online petition (click for link) and if you can email or write to your councillor (link for councillor finder) expressing what a stupid idea this is.

So if you don't want Bristol to become a playground for the scamra van sign the petition and pass this on to as many Bristol friends as you can

General / DLNA UPnP Controller and Linux
« on: 25 August 2012, 09:36:07 pm »
Any linux experts played around with this?

Basically have mediatomb running as a server, have a WDTV box that is a DLNA renderer. Windoze 7 has a "play to" function that sends the stream to the renderer. Sort of works ok, but I've been trying to find a linux (red hat/fedora) equivalent. There are loads of servers and clients by the bucket load, but no controllers (at least none for fedora that seem to work).
