Post by: CRH on 16 August 2012, 09:01:59 pm
earlier today i went into my garage to start my 2 wheeled friend up!..after not running it for a couple of wks!!...key in!..ig on!..kill switch to run!...and with a press of the button she fired up instantly!!!...so whilst its purring away, i thought ile just chk over the lights etc!!...then....... :eek .....light switch to on,..headlight on dip, rear light ok!!....indicators fine!...but....ALL the clock warning lights flashing on and off!! :\ ...now at first this was only doing it when i flicked to high beam?...but tried it again a bit ago and now its doing it on dip!!.....chkd over all visible wiring!...seems ok?....everything tight and no corrosion anywhere!..all fuses making good contact etc!....any ideas..?????????

First thought, esp as it hasn't been used for a couple of weeks, is your battery; how old is it?

Failing / failed batteries cause weird symptoms on many bikes.

battery only 1 month old!! put a motobatt on it,...so think we can rule that out?....oil light,..fuel low level light,..neutral,and both indicator and high beam keep flashing!!....doesnt affect the clock lights themselves though?....

Although it's a new battery, I would double check it and make sure it is charged; it is possible to get faulty parts even from new so I wouldn't rule it out of a fault-finding sequence on that basis.

Does steering lock affect it at all (for better or worse)?
If your battery is ok, I'd be checking earth points in detail, esp perhaps the clock unit itself where connections can be quite sensitive.

ok cheers adie!...ile give it a look over tomora. .....and no? steering lock doesnt affect it at all?.....tried the usual tapping shaking kicking etc!! just cant understand it?.....only thing i had a electrical problem with, was the neutral light bt 3month ago!!.....it stayed on in gear!! but that turned out to be a bare wire touching engine?......its been fine up till today!!! and it never gets wet! as its bone dry in me garage!!....and i only use when dry weather!!

Are your lights flickering on and off at random, or is there any patterns (for example do they flicker at indicator speed, or in sympathy with engine speed, does temperature make any difference)?

The printed circuits used in those clocks can be quite sensitive; maybe the problem lies in there?
Title: Re: Electrics going mad!!!!!
Post by: CRH on 17 August 2012, 12:02:36 am
No!!...lights arnt flickering, and when you put indicators on they work fine!,,,not flashing slow or erratic!!...as are the hazards!!...it seems to be only when i switch on the headlights!! ....then everthing starts to flash at the same time about one second intervals?....

Could it be worth checking out the bulb / wiring that sends the illumination signal to the high beam indicator? Only thing in my head that sort of links it all together... Have you stripped down the dials yet?

Christ, even I'm struggling now; electrical problems don't usually bother me!

If your earth points / wiring are ok, I wonder if your reg/rec is on its way out, or a poor connection here?

You say your battery was replaced recently?
Title: Re: Electrics going mad!!!!!
Post by: CRH on 17 August 2012, 08:34:47 pm
yes mate bt 4wks ago!....put a new motobatt on it!!....spins it over like fk!....chkd it today after standing all night and 12.8v...when its running am getting 14.3v.....all lecys loaded up and get 13.9..thats at idle?.....
Title: Re: Electrics going mad!!!!!
Post by: AdieR on 17 August 2012, 09:26:35 pm
Just wondered why you replaced the battery last month; a failing / failed reg/rec can is capable of taking out a battery.

Just out of interest, have you tried checking voltages at 4/5000rpm?
Title: Re: Electrics going mad!!!!!
Post by: CRH on 17 August 2012, 10:25:25 pm
Hi,adie...the reason i changed the battery was that the bike hadnt been used for years before i had it!!.and had been kept behind a sofa in a flat!!....the battery had not been removed either?...when i bought it i put it on a optimate and it seemed to pick it up!! but as soon as winter came it was foooked!....it also was its original battery, this being confirmed by its mileage and the one owner i got it off!!...it had only done 5100miles at that time!....i have checked the voltage @ 5000rpm and ime getting...14.7volts...and when loaded up ime getting 14.2volts..........

I don't know if this has got something to do with the illuminations and the big beardy man coming etc by my poorly Fazer is doing this since Friday. Lights come and go, rev counter drops to 0 and back etc - it's as if someone is turning off and on the ignition. Based on this thread, I will check the wires, fuses etc (when/if I get a dry day that is bright enough to see what I am looking at) and will report back.

Oh, sorry about digging out an ancient thread.

Turned out be nothing more than a lose contact at the battery terminal. Phew.  While at it, also figured out contact cleaner is not the same as lubricant. I had tried cleaning left hand controls with contact cleaner couple of weeks ago and the indicator switch was getting harder and harder to operate and finally it completely stopped, and I had to resort to the good old ways of signaling by waving my hand (when possible). Opened it up and sprayed some GT85 and now it's all working again. Ta!

I had a similar problem; as soon as I indicated or went to full beam the clocks went off...

Found out it was corrosion on the main multi-pin connector on the LHS of fairing.  Take it apart and get a fine file / emery cloth and clean up all the connectors.

Hopefully that should sort the problem, it did for me!
