Battery recommendations
« on: 30 June 2012, 05:03:03 pm »
Went to start the bike today and it turned over once then the starter relay started buzzing. Connected on an intelligent charger and after 10 minutes the charger says the battery is fully charged!

I'll leave her on charge over night but it's looking like the battery might be goosed. :'(

Anyone got any recommendations on a good quality battery at a reasonable price? I don't even want to ask how much Yamaha want for e newun  :eek

Decent independent bike shop or somewhere like Halfords should be able to get you a decent one without stupid price tags, something like a Yuasa battery is probably a good bet. New battery should be £40-ish.

I've found

www.tayna.co.uk

pretty good prompt delivery. I paid a bit more for Westco AGM as they have a lower discharge rate.

Very unusual for a battery to peg out in okay weather?
I deal with film equipment batteries daily, they don't suddenly go from good to bad overnight, you get warning signs, make sure cables haven't come loose for starters?

I've had exactly the opposite experience with lead-acid vehicle batteries. All the ones I've had to change have gone from starting the engine with no difficulty one day to not being able to energise the relay the next. (Oddly, the one in my Fazer is still going strong after nearly 14 years use, but I fully expect it to turn to scrap overnight at some point.)
All the same, you're right about checking the connections are good before spending money on a replacement. :)

I get fuses go, which is a simple replacement, but lead acid batteries have a generally good lifespan, as in many years.
Although they should get charged whilst riding it doesn't hurt to give them a separate booster charge once a year, it can make a difference, because it's all input, and no output when charging.
On a bike, i'd expect trouble starting in cold temperatures, which is why i'd look elsewhere first.

Well I left the bike on charge overnight and she started first blip. Took her for a 180 mile run today stopping 6 times and on the last leg she didn't catch straight away then she turned over very slow for about 4 seconds then the starter began buzzing again. A quick bump start and away we went but when I got home she wouldn't restart. :o

I checked all the connections and I can't find anything wrong. It's still the original battery so 9 years old.

Looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet.

Bike battery life expectancy is estimated at between 3 to 5 years, depending on whether it sits around for long periods of time, ie: winter.

So you've had your moneys worth out of it, and a bit more by the sounds of it.  :)

Might be worth checking the alternator as well - could be a charging issue on top of the battery issue.

Had an issue where my alternator went on my car which took the battery with it. Didn't find out until after id replaced the alternator and went to work 40 miles away...

Got myself a Motobatt and fitted it tonight.

Very good, no charging needed and she started so quick I didn't even hear the starter!

Thanks for the recommendation :thumbup
