Getting to grips with it all okely dokely. stripped the Honda 750 carbs down. Got meself a bike ramp in the end btw, dont half make things easier...Parts cleaned up lovely and blown dry
-
checked float heights both manually (carb at sixty degrees with tab just touching valve and then float height of 25mm set) and visually with clear tube before assembly. Do they look better or foccing what :)
-
carbs back on and balanced. Bike hadnt run for eight years and now purrs like a kitten :thumbup

in the van and back to one very happy owner and pick up the next one. Im really looking forward to getting the 400 going again. I last rode this bike several years ago, and it was just like the ex owners all said...a mechanical little marvel, much nicer to ride than the 750.. Then the local bike shop fucked about with the carbs (just before they went bust)and it hasnt run since. apparently he didnt even take them off so whatever he did wrong cant be too drastic. theres some gt380 carbs in the box to clean too

well, the drain screws in the float bowls were facing the wrong way, and the o rings around the main jets and float valve bodies were all focced. So, he'd dropped the float bowls in situ, then forced the new jets etc in blind with no o ring grease, guillotining the outer edge off so bady it looks like it has two o rings in some cases. The carb kits he got were cheapies, so Im going to get new o rings and refit the original Keihin stuff...bike only has 11,000 on it so they should be fine

btw im thinking of going on 'dragons den' with the 'speshul tool' i've invented, developed after years and years of R and D, to 'gently and carefully' ease a four bank back into the stubs... :) :lol ;)
I pulled me bloody back struggling to get me fazer thou ones in the last time I had em out, bugger that... ;)
-
Ogri, do you not use WD40 on the inlet manifolds and carb mouths to push the carbs back on. It has always worked for me, bottom in a little bit and then tilt top in then push them on. since WD40 is inflammable it will burn off when bike is started and helps seal the joints.
Are you happy with the Davidas?
-
Nice work dude :thumbup
-
Cheers VNA :)
unfazed the davidas are the mutts right enough mate, ive always struggled with carb balancers, but these make it laughably easy. theres a second hand set on the bay now, ive put a bid in coz if they go cheap enough ill have em as spares.

Brilliant.
I used to have a 400/4. As you say, wonderful little engines. Run like a sewing machine.
Another bike I regret selling, 41 years ago :(
-
i envy you. I couldnt believe how sweet the the thing ran. Back in the day I wanted a RD400, but this little honda is worlds apart, feels almost hand built. Taking the carbs off was a different ballgame entirely to the 750, so much thought has gone into every part of its design and build. It deserves its iconic status and then some

Where did you get the magnetic toolboard from? :lol

RGH 449P where are you now?
Tax due 1-10-81 That doesn't look too promising.
-
Bought it new in 76 and sold it in 79. I wanted a bigger bike and px'd it towards a Suzuki GS750.
Looks like it had a short life. The parts are probably spread over dozens of bikes now.
-
one of the few classics id actually like, that 400.
though the 750 turnd out ok
