US roads are terrible for causing alarming noises: they either squeal at the slightest provocation, make moaning noises, clunks like you’re going down a flight of shallow steps or do an excellent impersonation of a flapping tyre.
Every time I’ve been out there I’ve pulled over convinced a tyre has gone down only to find they’re all fine and it was just the concrete surface. I guess once you’re used to it you then discount failed tyre noises and get caught out.
Fortunately UK roads are usually quieter than that, though the M25 has some American style surfaces.
I know what you mean. A lot of the freeways are concrete and patterned for grip or something. If it were up to me I'd change the frequency of the pattern so it played a tune as you drove over it.  :D

Riding in it is just part and parcel of living in this country, it rains a lot so i just deal with it.
The main thing is wearing the right gear to stay warm and dry.
Once you feel ANY water anywhere on your body then that’s when it really becomes a major issue.
I’ll never forget riding back from the coast to London years ago on a job for work, i don’t think i had heated grips then, my jacket was leaking and i could feel water coming through my boots and gloves, then i hit traffic near Heathrow because of an accident and i literally felt like giving up and finding the nearest train station, i was so cold.
Not pleasant at all.

Been there done that. When I was a learner I remember coming back from Fishguard in the rain with less than waterproof boots and gloves. When I accelerated the water sloshed to my heels and to my toes when I braked. I was so cold that when I stopped for a drink at a layby I had to warm my hands under the hot tap in the bogs before I could buy a cup of tea.

The irony of the 'Remainers' now advocating Parliamentary sovereignty and democracy in a last ditch hope of scuppering Brexit.

They were more than happy to see the loss of sovereignty and democracy over the last 40 years though.

What loss of sovereignty and democracy? I haven't noticed any.

Highways England. Nuff said.
Yesterday a lorry broke down where the M5 Northbound joins the M42. Now being a good driver and due to the absence of a hard shoulder he tucked his lorry into the start of the cones which close off the fast lane (and that's another gripe). So what do the HE do? They have the signs for the preceding 5 miles saying fast lane closed due to obstruction. So everyone gets into the remaining 3 lanes which of course then grind to a halt. Why on earth couldn't they just have a 1 mile warning? It's not like he was causing an obstruction in any case.

Thinking that you've just had a good day at work and then being told you're redundant (as of now) just as you're about to go home.

What? Isn't that questionably legal?

I use my phone, which is ok until you loose your signal. I too like maps, I remember the big yellow AA road atlas, no car was complete without one of these back in the day, I wonder if you can still get them.

I bought one last year.
I do use my sat nav a lot but still prefer to have a map as back up.

As I haven't had a good moan for a while, here are a few.................

1.  The current trend to start every sentence with "So"

2.  The current fashion to go everywhere clutching a mug of coffee. There is even a company selling "take-away" coffee cartons that you take home, pour in hot water and then take out with you?? I call these peeps "coffee mugs"

3.   The Americanisation of cutlery handling including ever more elaborate ways of incorrectly holding the simple knife and fork.

4.   Mobile phone users who have their calls on speaker so every call becomes a conference call involving all within earshot.

5.   The growing trend for drivers to park just wherever the FOC they like with absolutely no regard for the inconvenience of others. I left home recently to find a van parked across my drive, when there were ample marked spaces available. It is now quite common to see vehicles parked with all four wheels on the pavement, or right on the corner of busy road junctions.

Right........rants over time for happy hour.

You're me you are.

You dont ride it much - same here

I dunno, 10k a year is more than most.

Quote
BUT the big difference is I LOVE LOVE LOVE riding and as you say you "don't enjoy riding it any more than I enjoy driving a car"
So yes I think for you it could be time to sell.

TBH a bike is just a means to an end. I don't enjoy riding it any more than I enjoy driving a car. There are advantages i.e. filtering and parking. But the disadvantages out weigh the advantages at present. The problem of a lack of secure parking at work, the cold and it's not that much more economical than the car.

I know you’re talking about discs but beware of Armstrong pads. I’ve used their sintered versions in the past on another bike and they were simply awful in the wet. In fact they were dangerous, no bite at all.

Seconded. Real brown trouser moment coming over Cymystwyth in the wet.

I know what you mean. But with parking round the hospital where I work being appalling and with me not using the  bike much over the winter and with paying for a space on someone's drive......
It's a 50 mile each way commute each day and TBH I'd rather sit in the warm with a decent sound system even if it does take me longer.

I'm contemplating getting rid of the FZS600. It's another expense I don't need and it's not getting used for 4 months of the year. So what sort of value would you put on a 1998 bike with 42k on the clock. No major damage, a few slight scratches (and I mean slight, barely cutting through the top coat). It's got a top box, not that that materially affects the cost. Valve clearances done 18 months ago (if I can find the receipt). Basically it's a completely average example.

General / Re: summer water proof gloves??
« on: 06 November 2017, 02:21:53 pm »
And if you put your sleeves over the gloves then water blows up your sleeve at high speed and if you put your gloves over your sleeve water runs down into your gloves at low speed. You can't win.

If I use anything it's just a drop of detergent. Generally I resort to riding for a few seconds with the visor open then shutting it untill they mist up again. Repeat until the misting stops which seems to only take 5 minutes or so.

another vote for pinlock.
I just replaced my with a reactalight one  & its great (was pricey though) but a standard pinlock about £20 I think!
Where did you get the reactolite pinlock from ?

Anywhere that sells pinlock inserts should have the options to buy different tints. I believe the reactive one is called 'Protectint' and works the same way as reaction lenses in glasses
I can't find anywhere that sells a reactolite visor that's why I asked where the poster got it from. I still can't find one and, in fact, I've never even seen one.

https://www.thevisorshop.com/en/Arai-Pinlock-Insert-For-VAS-V-Type-Visors-Fits-RX-7V/m-18178.aspx

You need to look for Protectint apparently

I am looking into the viability of solar.
Just getting my head around the figures needed to run a house is kind of mind blowing.
My mate runs a 2.8 Kva Honda now as it's a lot quieter than the larger one - how he lives with that set-up I'll never know, far too basic for me.
I know a bit about electrics (just enough to know when to stop) and I learn new bits every now and then. I should have learned properly when I was younger as just about everyone brings their dodgy electrics to me to fix.
The more you fix the more you learn  :lol My moto is simple, "If it's already broken you can't break it, the worst you can do is fix it"  :D

oh I dunno, I could quite easily break something worse.

Passwords.
Have had an account set up with a well known retailer for years but not used for a while and went to buy something and NO I have to reset my password to something better so I enter a few more letters- not enough as I need some higher case letters, so I do that - no good as I still need some numbers, so I do that, great -now I have re enter it again to confirm and FOC me I have forgotten what I put in the first place so have to start over with a pen and paper at hand.
I know its for my own protection but there must be an easier way. I am going to have a chip implanted in my brain - it may even help with my everyday life.

We have a tomotherapy system here which has something like 20 different usernames and passwords! WTF! And those are just the official ones, let alone any user specific ones.
