Re-fitting rear Fuel Tank bracket - parts order
« on: 04 December 2019, 10:49:24 am »
I'm attempting to re-fit the (Rear) fuel tank mounting Bracket, which is in a number of parts.
(I know - I should have paid more attention when pulling this apart). :)

While screwed back together tightly, this has left the bracket quite loose, which isn't correct.

Below is the order I'm fitting these parts, plus an accompanying scribble. :)
Please can someone put me right here!?

Top
- Tank bracket on top.
- Thick rubber pad sits on top of frame.
- 2 cylindrical screw spacers positioned into screw holes in above thick rubber pad.
=FRAME=
- Air filter box rubber cover (rear part) sits under frame.
- Thin screw bracket underneath, that the 2 bolts screw into.
Bottom

Thanks!

Does it make a difference if the screw spacers go into position before the rubber pad as it seems to show in drawing?.

Thank you both for your prompt responses. :thumbup

The schematic is useful. Although a little confusing as it doesn't appear to show all parts I've detailed above?

The screw spacers infact drop through the (larger) holes in the thick rubber pad until they hit the lower screw bracket (positioned under the frame).
Then with everything sandwiched together, the top tank bracket screws down, it gets as far as the metal spacers it touches and wont screw any further (to make it tight).

I've screwed the 2 bolts all the way through the bottom screw bracket (off the bike), so its not as if there's a problem with them screwing onto these threads... something else I considered.

The bracket is meant to be quite loose, without the tank on it it will move easily.  When the tank goes on it will all firm up.

I second Jules-C, the bracket is supposed to be quite loose, although the bolts do tighten up. I think its intentionally like that to give it a bit of free play if you go over bumps and whatnot so the weight of a full tank is somewhat cushioned.

Thanks that's quite reassuring. As I've tried a lot of combinations and just cant get this any tighter (than hand loose).  :rolleyes :eek
Even with the front Screw in place (securing the front of the tank down) I can put both hands on the tank and rock it side to side.

Unless anyone is actually removing their tank and can note the exact positioning of these parts, I might leave out the cylindrical spacers, so at least I can screw the bracket down tight!
Rather the tank is seated secure and doesn't move at all, than any ability for it to be able to shift while riding. Lesson learnt for next time.  :rolleyes

As several people have said, the order of parts you have is correct and the bracket at the back is only loosely fixed. When the seat is fitted the tank’s free movement isn’t noticeable and I’d advise against “improving” the rigidity of the attachment. Yamaha made it like that for a reason… probably something along the lines of not wanting the tank to empty 3 gallons of fuel onto your feet due to a stress fracture.  :lol

The cylindrical spacers are there to stop you tightening it down  :rolleyes

Or on to the still running engine when you drop/get knocked off the bike and the tank acts as a stressed member when the frame flexes

Well its back together, all parts included. Not dropped the seat on yet, to see how that firms things up.
Thanks ALL for the feedback, has been very useful.  :thumbup
