Oil light fsz1000 gen1
« on: 03 July 2014, 08:42:02 am »
After some thoughts please. Last couple of times when out on my bike the oil light is come on and off quite a lot , checked oil and it's between the two dots on visual glass. Any thoughts what it could be ... Cheers

Mine does that too, apparently they are cursed with an overly sensitive oil light (or the pickup etc).  If mine is below half on the sight glass I get the light coming on now and then until the engine is warm...

I tend to carry a small bottle of oil under the seat now just in case it comes on when commuting or a long ride out and I have forgotten to top it up.

Mine seems to use about 200ml of oil every week which is about 500 miles.

I seem to remmber this , its an oil level warning light and not an oil pressure warning light when the motort is hot and the oil is being pumped around the engine the level will drop and the light has been know to ready this and flash the warning light as long as your oil level is in the right place when the motor is at rest and you can see it in the window you should be fine !!  should be !

I've had my bike since 2003 and as yet only had this once ! riding through london ! to say the motor got a little hot would be an understatment !

I am reliably informed (Yamaha mechanic of 20 plus years experience) that if you keep the oil sight glass full that will eliminate the problem. I have been doing this on Fazers since 2002 and never topped up or had overfill problems. Regards Mike

Just to complete the before explanations.
The dashboard electronics monitors the oil level permamently. If too low the warning light comes up. This only happens 2 times, sometimes 3. Further warnings are omitted and not displayed. I guess this was implemented to not become annoying.
This behaviour repeats after each power up (if the level is stil too low).
The level warning is very sensitive and precautious. No need for panic, except it comes up directly after starting.

Cheers for the advice , the warning light was coming on nearly every time I was over 7000 revs. I have just topped oil up to top level lets see if it is ok

I keep mine near the top of the site glass , that eliminates the problem on mine , and I never have to top it up between oil changes , which I do annually , I do about 3.5k a year .
