General / Re: Thinking of getting a Tenere 700 or a CB500x
« on: 06 March 2021, 12:37:26 pm »
The Tenere and the CB500X are pitched at different markets. The Tenere is a semi-pukka dual sport machine with a very modern engine and cycle parts to match. The CB500X is a commuter bike in a DS dress, with a much smaller output engine (see above). My commuter bike is a NC700X which is as the same vein as the 500X in that it looks kind of dual sport, but isnt. CB500 residuals are dire [making it a decent used buy], expect Tenere residuals to stay strong for a while. This part of the market is crammed with options like the Stroms and is very competitive.

The only liability insurance which is legally required is employer's (to provide workforce protection).

If he has any sense he'll have relevant insurance to indemnify him against professional errors.

I know mistakes happen, but leaving it in an oven sounds like the work of a right muppet.

Yes true, got confused with employers insurance.   Personally I've always had liability insurance that protects me and covers my work against mistakes or damage I may cause.  However he's still liable for his work and any damaged he causes, by not having the correct level of insurance he's open to losing his assets and/or having judgments against him.  This is were UK law is an lacking, as those who choose not to insurance themselves with mechanics insurance or equivalent which provides cover for mistakes/damage etc and leaves the customer exposed.  Moral of the story ask for proof of insurance before allowing them to work on your property.

As you say he's a muppet, if he doesn't replace or pay, name and shame so others don't fall into the same trap.

I think there was a story about 5 or 6 years ago (probably longer given memory compression) of a woman with a teashop. A customer got injured and sued her - no public liability. Lost everything: business, house, the lot. The thing i remember was that insurance would have cost her about £250/year tops. To run an sort of business without protection from liability seems silly to anyone with a modicum of common sense.

As has been said get a value - if they are now rare and expensive, get proof and go for a small claim if the fairing-melter doesnt resolve it promptly. 6 weeks at most and then letter-before-action.

Yep he sure does.  Either he replaces it or gives you the cash equivalent.  His liability insurance will cover it, could be he hasn't got any cover and that's illegal if trading.  Either way, if he won't pay up small claims court.

If you use any branch of Universal Tyres, in the south of the country, there's a set charge for disposing your old tyres. You could cut them up with an angle grinder, black bag the pieces and chuck it in the landfill skip. :rolleyes

Yeah, this.

the front end is amazing.

I sold a 2011 ZX10R which handled brilliantly, this thing is different, but allows even faster on-road progress. The line it holds through a turn is perfect. Can brake hard whilst leaning over.

Plush ride too.

bar end off, a funnel and lots of rattling and tamping.

Worked a treat.

if you can match the thread/diamter up to something else, there are loads of cheap CNC adjusters on eblag.

something like this, but probably not this:

Worth checking the american FZ sites to see if someone has done it and found a match.

For Sale & Wanted / Gen 2 FZ1/S Wilbers shock lowering ~45mm ish
« on: 05 May 2020, 08:24:35 pm »
Having a lockdown tidy up. Found this shock i had on my 2011 Fazer.

Bit of crust on the cylinder tube, but nothing nasty and no rot on the chrome damper rod.

A 640 model which is 20mm shorter (300mm) to give 45mm of lowering. Was fully functional when last used, if i thought it wasnt any good i would have chucked it rather than bagging it and putting on the shelf.

Might fit the FZ8, buyer beware.

£60 inc p+p?

I used Harpic on my FZ1S' exhaust a few years ago. I too was interested to see if it sped up future corrosion.

It really does get them gleaming and it didn't seem to induce accelerated corrosion afterwards. Do take care though, it is hydrochloric acid [as stated above] and is pretty strong. Have goggles and a ready source of water on hand.

« on: 23 February 2020, 01:10:41 pm »
Norton tried to do what lots of small volume UK motorcycle manufactures before them had done tried to up the volume without really considering the cash flow. They then started taking payments and using them to keep it all looking rosey. It reflects very poorly on the CEO (on the fiddle?)

UK Manufacturing is booming: Rolls Royce have just opened another composites centre and are expanding Derby. Siemens are opening a huge train plant in Goole. https://www.cityam.com/uk-pmi-manufacturing-grows-at-fastest-rate-in-10-months/ . The risk now is corona affecting the supply chain not brexit. thank goodness Corbyn never got in, the outlook would be grim.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Bloody Downpipes.
« on: 02 December 2019, 08:07:15 pm »
Have you done the usual Harpic Power treatment? That gets them back to a shiny silver colour. Still have to clean and polish them after but makes a bit difference
Ideal!  Thanks, I have the headers removed, do I simply pour it over the downpipes, leave, then wash it off?  Or should I scrub them with a hard brush?  Harpic should at least get the shit off!  :thumbup

Best method is to pour some harpic in an old cup and then grab a paint brush and just paint it on (paint brush helps get in all the nooks and crannies) leave for 5-10 minutes then just rinse off. You'll see the change instantly.
Has to be Harpic Power though for some reason as normal bleach wont work. That Harpic has some kind of extra corrosive ingredient 🤷‍♂️

Harpic Power 10 is Hydrochloric Acid in a gel suspension. Works a treat, but keep if alloy casings. Regular bleach is an alkali and wont react with the corrosion.

« on: 17 November 2019, 12:30:11 pm »
Not sure if this interests you, but i have a full chinese FZ1 lockset and an immobiliser delete mod. I bought them to fit [but never did] to my FZ1S,as the ignition was getting temperamental. When I sold it the dealer who bought it off of me said he could fix the lock, so i kept it.

the delete details are here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Immobiliser-Emulator-for-Yamaha-Motorcycles-Immobilizer-Bypass-Emmulator-Circuit-/261585749443

You can have the lot for £20 in p+p if you want (clears it for me too)

General / Re: Halogen headlight switch to LED
« on: 13 November 2019, 06:07:37 pm »
Nighteye brand LED headlight bulbs are excellent. The led is in the same position as the equivalent bulb, so the pattern is the same. They are also long lasting and the heatsink doesnt have a fan, so they fit most bulb spaces without problem. highly recommended and much less sketchy than no-brand chinesium led headlamp 'bulbs'.

As a teenager a friend and I used to frequently go down to the shore of the Severn Estuary (close to the English side of the Prince of Wales bridge) to kill the time during school holidays. One day we went down and followed the bank along. At one of the Pills (the local name for a creek) we found the leftovers from some civil engineering work including a very large (+2m) empty plywood cable roll. Without even discussing any consequence of our actions, we heaved it to the top of the banking (it was heavy and took quite a lot of effort). We then gave it a big push and watched as it rolled along, assisted by gravity and plopped into the creek, which as this point is muddy, about 2m wide and steep sided, it stopped centrally almost perfectly forming a dam. We wandered off to find mischief elsewhere.
A couple of days later we went back down to the pill- i dont even think we discussed the events from the days before until we saw what was going on. In front of us was a significant workforce working around a mobile crane, who were trying to pull the cable roll out. It must have presented a huge risk to cause potential flooding!
We sat on the bank for a couple of hours watching and chuckling. Eventually they hauled it back out, needless to say it and the rest of the construction detritus were not left there again...

FZ6 / Fazer / Re: Performance gain from K&N air filter?
« on: 07 April 2018, 09:54:03 pm »
I ve recently fitted Scorpion end cans and de-cat pipe. My understanding is that on fuel injected machines, the ecu adjusts fuel supply based on information sent to it by the O2 sensor, so aftermarker exausts/air filters are compoensated for automatically. Is that correct?

Only partially. The type of O2 sensor used on motorcycles is 'narrow band' and is only used when the bike is running at steady throttle [cruising along] to keep the bike as close to stoichiometric fuelling (14.7:1), it effectively gives a high-low output and does not tell the ECU the exact amount of fuel being burned. In all other conditions - closed throttle, under load, WOT etc - the ECU looks at the map in it's rom. That's the purpose of things like the power commander, they pull the map nodes in the direction required by the tuner. A 'wideband ' O2 sensor can be used to alter fuelling at all points and it's why you buy 'autotune' or similar devices [I dont rate them for motorcycles, as the response is too slow compared to the fuelling change rate].

ive used BC and Oponeo, but now just buy from ebay. The side by side competition keeps the prices as low as possible. I am a cheapskate though, and just ordered a front for my NC700X. A Maxxis ST for £40 delivered. Riding on a shoestring....

For Sale & Wanted / Power Commander V [5] for FZ1/FZ1S Fazer
« on: 09 March 2018, 07:47:01 pm »

My Fazer got sold the other day  :eek , still have an FZR1000EXUP [plus non-yamaha stuff] so all good though  :D .

Anyway got a working PCV for an FZ1, think itll fit an FZ8 too, but youll need to check.

It's only glitch is that one of the port bungs [i think to connect accessories like a map switch] is missing, so it's got some tape on it. Shedloads of maps out there for it or get it on the dyno for a full fat tune up.

£100ono posted. Itll go on the bay if no takers on here

General / Re: Camping in the Black Forest, anybody been?
« on: 11 January 2018, 07:19:33 pm »
Relative to France there are fewer campsites in Baden Wurttemburg and they do get very busy in August - particularly in the south of the BF the closer you are to Freiburg, Titisee, Todtnau, Mustertal and the Feldberg.

I'd do a search and see if you can book a site online.

Dont forget whilst down there to do the Kandel, the Glottertal and the Route De Ballon - all as nice as the B500. I also like the road from Todtnau to the frontier with CH. A good run is Titisee over Feldbergpass onto Basel then up the Route de Ballon over to Colmar and back to Titisee.

The problem is that we wont know where we are going until about the Wednesday before we go on the Saturday. So we cant book in advance.

None of us like camping in the rain so if the weather is going to be "British" in Germany or even in France too, we will be going to my place near Nevers. At least then we will be able to get the gazebos out and drink beer under cover on the patio and have all the facilities of a house to take the sting out of going on ride outs in shite weather.

Breisgau is the sunniest place in Germany, I've camped there frequently and cant remember it raining - the Aargau (in Swabian Bavaria) on the other hand....
