Title: Who wants some free tyres?
Post by: BBROWN1664 on 25 August 2017, 03:15:46 pm

I have just received the following email from one of the BIG tyre manufacturers. (I highlighted the bit that probably important)

Every now and then in the UK we get the opportunity to trial some early sets of tyres that are not yet part of the Michelin product range.  Although they are the finished mass production product, not prototypes, the final development stage of the tyres is feedback from the normal tyre buying public, seeing how the tyres are received and perceptions of their performance from ordinary riders free from influence and bias.  This ideally also acts as a teaser for the wider public, alerting potential buyers to a new product and allowing for an independent and non biased review of them.
Your forum is a large, popular and well respected site, and we thought that you would be in a great position to possibly help us with this at some stage.  What we would suggest would be sending a pair of tyres for a forum member to try out.  They could be a popular and respected regular contributor, someone that tends to offer accurate reviews of kit and parts, or even yourself!  They don’t need to be tyre experts, but someone that racks up a lot of miles would probably be best.  What we would expect in return for the free set of tyres would be at least 3 reasonably detailed posts about the tyres, perhaps an early days report on their initial impressions, a second report once they’ve been used in the wet or different conditions, and a follow up or conclusion, with permission for us to use any images and quotes in our advertising.
If you’d be interested in helping with this we’d like to hear from you, and as and when we get any appropriate opportunities we’ll be back in touch.

I can rule myself out unless they want a good report on dry performance and can wait 1 year for me to rack up some miles. Also what rules me out is -----

They could be a popular member
respected contributor,

Same sort of miles as Celtic. M/way, back roads and banging about London all weathers. Don't hang about either.

I'm interested in this too.  I ride ~30 miles per day on a commute, all year round, any weather.  Roughly 50% motorway vs urban, but also a option of cross-country twisties when I've got the time to do it.
I've been running Michelins (PR3/PR4) for over 5 years now, so able to do compare against them.

you're not in ya cant win, i'm in ireland, so that's probably ruling me out right away, but, it could also provide an advantage.

i do a lot of miles.

i commute almost 200km a day to work and back,
i ride in all weather conditions, usually shite weather. even snow last year.

i do some slow group rides,
some fast hooligan riding,
and some flat out very high speed runs on private roads.

long motorways and twisty back roads.
and a newcomer to michelin tyres so unbias

Maybe the tyre guys can give a few sets out as there are so many worthy testers put forward so far (Not me )

I wouldn't bother with this on the basis that if the 'testers' thought the tyres were lacking or less desirable than tyres they've used from other manufacturers the review wouldn't see the light of day.
Isn't a free set of tyres a bit if a bribe in the first place?

Not everyone's in a position to stick a finger up at free tyres saving £250 and some might actually like the idea of being the first to try a new product also it just said in return 3 posts which appears to seem posts on this forum and permission to use your post wording and/or pictures in advertising ,so the reviews would see the light of day on here, whether they would the appear in company advertising is different but instead of looking at it as a bribe look at it as a payment for the time and effort

its not like you have to pay for them if you dont like the tyres after riding on them.

I'm in category B.
Having used all the major manufacturers tyres when they bring out a new one I find myself going back to Michelin because the side wall construction suits the way I like my suspension to work.
I'm currently using pilot power 3 because I can source them for 155 gbp/pair delivered.
I recently rejected a set of Conti sport attacks for 100 gbp because the side wall is too soft for my liking.
