Been thinking about this for a while now , as we all know the standard can is a bit bland , quite and heavy , I have a scorpion can which is a lot lighter but about the same length , with the baffle in its not much louder tham the standard one , with it out its way too loud , more or less straight through , which is great when I want to let off steam :lol
so was thinking of drilling the rivits out and cutting a lump off , shortening the baffle at the same time , my understanding is "the shorter the can the louder its going to be" not sure if this is correct or not but sounds good :rolleyes
anyone done this before ? How much do i cut off ? Or do i leave both of them on there ;)
-
I see your bike does the can can then--maybe it's French.
-
I have a carbon Scorpion, and without the baffle the noise level is ok, doesn't grate on the nerves, passes MOTs.
I've always wanted to shorten the link pipe though, purely as a cosmetic thing.
-
I have a round scorpion. It sounds absolutely fine with the baffle out.
At low revs or rolling about town it’s very civilised.
When you open it up, and the EXUP opens up, it makes plenty of noise.
-
To answer your original post Red... just drill out the rivets, pull put the insides, chop it down to desired length, then chop down the inner tube (making sure to keep the part where the baffle screws in), re wrap it with fresh exhaust wadding and put it all back in then rivet the it all back together. I think the shortest 'road legal' exhausts are around 380mm but I'm sure plenty of people get away with shorter.
Obviously it will be a bit louder but that's the nature of the beast
-
I think the standard length looks right.

Plus maybe if you shorten it too much you could effect back pressure, then other exhaust mysteries such as scavenging etc etc.
-
Ooooo I have a saucy french fazer :lol
never thought about the link pipe mr trimmer , not looked at the bike but wouldn't that cause clearence problems ?
thats strange VNA, baffle out on mine and It sounds as If its straight through , looks good on your bike but that could be the massive wardrobe making it look smaller than it is :lol
thanks DUDE , nicly explained , dont want to go too short as iam not too keen on the stubby cans , was thinking of cutting enough off to leave the mounting strap in the middle of the can , always thought with the strap off centre it just didn't look right , might be me though...
wont get to look untill the weekend But i think i'll do a liitle at a time to see what difference it makes.....

Don't think so. Wouldn't achieve what you want of course though.
-
No ....interesting though....

You mean my handbags. :)
Well for example I started mine up after work and it sounds almost stock. Then one of my collegues came out and started his decatted fireblade sitting next to mine. That was loud and I could no longer hear the thou.
Are you sure your exup is working OK?
-
Yeh , exup good , gets serviced every year........I'll fit the scorpion saturday morning and take it for a spin , its been a while since ive used it.... :thumbup
-
Mr.Red,pm Flooky, he knows about cutting down cans.
-
How does this look...? :D
-
What have you done :eek No no no!
-

cheers ROBBO :thumbup
-
Nice work steve :thumbup ....thats more or less what i was thinking , the unknown to me is how much noise difference cutting x amount off makes , i'll use your picture as a guide scale wise and probably shorten it by half to start with.....dont want to end up with a shortenend can thats too loud :o
-
ERK... have been pining for smart smaller exhaust can for some time.....purely for cosmetic reasons...the standard can seems to do a good job...
so can't justify buying new one....never occurred to me to cut the std one like u suggest....so rushed out with drill and angle grinder....only to find the mine is welded, not riveted. Back to pining and googling carbon fiber cans on Ebay :b
-
What have you done :eek No no no!
What hav I Done...!!!???? U turned yer bike into a VAN with all that luggage..... :'(
-
Ye cannae wack a top box or some panniers. :)
I mean what use is a bike if you cannae carry some odds and sods on it.
-
Slipped the scorpion on this morning and took the baffle out , its not as loud as I remember , iam knocking on a bit now and I have problems with my hearing , parhaps thats what it is , so now its just a cosmetic thing , and I'll still have the choice of baffle in or out........Iam thinking more or less what STEVE has done to VNA 's bike , but I think I'll cut half of that off first to see the difference in noise levels......
-
Back off again..........two lines on the can , shortening either by 140mm or 74mm , 140mm is what I would like ,74mm would give me a can lenght of 380mm , which may be the shortest "road legal" length , so I think the best place to start...
Cant find any BS mark on the can or "not for road use" ,only markings are on the "exit cap" but these look like model numbers to me and will be going back on......
-
Drilled the rivets using a 4mm drill . No problem , both end caps are an extremely snug fit with a small amount of sealent on them , lots of pulling , twisting and swearing and I managed to ease them out without any damage...
was a bit of a struggle getting the end caps out so I might just go the whole hog and chop the 140mm off.....
time for tea I think ;)
-
Chop, chop :eek
-
Cut the centre tube down by the same amount and re-assembled , re-bored the end cap rivet holes and dug out my rivet gun only to find it jammed solid :\ ......too late on a sunday to go shopping and with both end caps a very nice snug fit i put it back on the bike......theres not a lot of difference with the baffle out , expected , with the standard length baffle in its a little bit louder but a lot more fruity :thumbup .......i might still shorten the baffle but its not going to need much taking out....happy with the way it looks apart from the colour....anyone wrapped a can before ?
-
Looks loads better red, I did wonder why you didnt cut the purple end off though instead of the badged side Haha
You would have ended up with a silver can with the scorpion badge still on it?
But hindsight and all that Haha
Wouldnt say you could vinyl wrap a pipe, it gets too hot?
Maybe powder coating could possibly work?
-
Hey dude , yeh I did umm and ahhhhh...if I cut the other end I would have had a slight discolouring at one end where the colour starts to fade in....might be able to scotch brite it perhaps.....mmmm powder coat might be good , want to get the wheels done soon so could throw the can in as well , still got the two riveted straps to put on , there going to be tight so might not work with the thickness of the powercoat......back to work tomorrow so plenty of thinking time ;)
-
You can get carbon sleeves, they had them on a stand at Peterborough last month, but they were circular not oval.
-
This could be an option for you

I'm sure there are probably others about that are bigger or cheaper etc but just thinking the idea could work
-
Bought a new rivit gun and fully assembled the can , one rivet pin has broken and jammed in the rivet , will replace that but not before a road test , thanks for the idea's DUDE + ROBBO , I'll leave it at it is for now but wiil go back to it at a later date , hope to have an extended test ride on sunday , but iam already thinking about cutting the baffle down or enlarging the holes...
-
That looks good...colour is fine :faz :smokin
-
Looking good, personally I'd buy a newer scorpion badge for it and just give it a good once over with some metal polish then I'd say you've saved yourself a few hundred quid 👍
Also make sure your take it on a 30+ mile slog on the motorway before you decide to cut more baffle down. All pipes sound good on the back roads when your on and off the throttle but it's when your at the same rpm for miles on end that a loud can will drive you insane haha
My brother in law bought a delkavic pipe for his versys 650 (twin) which was very loud but sounded the bollocks on start up and going round the twistes. After 2 days of riding to work and back on the motorway he took it off and asked me to sell it for him 🤣🤣

Had a full day on the bike yesterday , little bit fruity low down without being too loud , thats with the baffle in , before I shortened it with the baffle out it made the idle lumpy / uneven , but then you had a rush at the top end , with it shortened there is just a hint of lumpyness on idle but soon smooths out to a nice even power delivery upto the red line , sorry wiltshire :lol
dont think i'll bother playing with the baffle , happy with the way it is......for now ;)
