main jet problem,am I being thick
« on: 12 June 2019, 10:57:38 am »
2003 carbs, stripped and cleaned 3 main jets have daylight through 'em,but main jet at the TPS side has no hole..

Not bunged up,but looks like it's never had a hole in it..

Am I being thick..probably, but need someone to tell me :rolleyes

Cheers Clive

Yes...good question.
Each carb has three "jets"...the small pilot one, the large needlle one, and a third one which in my case all four appeared to have no hole through...so they are just blanks...?
mine is 2001.. I assumed these unused jets were "blanks", that might have been used on different model bikes....?
no doubt some foccer will enlighten us :eek

I checked the part number on Fowlers for the main jet and there is only one part number for the main jet..my thoughts are if there's no hole how does petrol get up through the main jet from the bowl ?? :rolleyes

The needle jet is the main jet...the other one doesn't do anything...? ;)

It's a blanking plug, filling a hole that was necessary during manufacturing.

THANKS
mystery solved...... 8)

Altho 3 of Clive's blanks seem to have holes thru them.....?? :eek

FOR CLARITY can JAMIEG285 confirm that there are only two jets in the carb...the pilot and the needle one...and that the needle jet is the "Main jet"...?

it seems that in some parts diagrams u have a needle jet AND a main jet..the blank???

ok so number 14 is the center one on this pic and should have 115 stamped on it - all should have holes thats your main jet (looking at spares now)
if i remember top left is a 0.6 which is a blank and has no hole (8 on fowlers)
top right is the starter jet so should be a a long one with holes (just much smaller - number 7 on fowlers)
there is also an air jet at the mouth of the carb but be realy carefull with that one and just used compressed air/carb cleaner and a little bit of wire to clean that one as they often get stuck and take some getting out if it goes wrong (fowlers number 6)

just found pic of my 0.6 jet on torch so here you go

The centre one on your picture is the one I'm on about .... it comes in 2 parts, the slotted part , and under that the part with holes and

an O ring....the slotted bit has on 1 of the 4 has no centre hole, the other 3 have got a centre hole in the slotted part

this is really puzzling me now :eek

this is what i am saying 'the slotted part' is a jet this should ALWAYS have a hole
the long piece underneath is just a holder and it holds the jet and allows fuel metering by the tapered needle as it raises

if there is no hole there is no fuel - factory standard is a #115 in the uk,

Unfortunately I'm miles and miles away in Gloucester  :\  I assembled the carbs back up today and will run her up this weekend..she was running ok

before, apart from a slight hesitation as I opened her up really quickly in top gear, plus I wanted to get a knackered mixture screw out.

Really appreciate your offer to have a look, I'll post an update next week :sun :sun permitting..
