Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / value clearance check at 25000
« on: 08 August 2021, 11:35:49 am »
Hi, the bike has reached 25000 and my question is do I really need to have the valves checked?
Money is a bit tight at the moment and I could do a small service my self,  but the valve check is way beyond me.How critical is it to do the check?
Can I wait till next year ( I am only doing less than1000 miles a year)The mechanic doing the job is unhelpful and non committal.I understand many will say it is important to follow Yamaha service schedules.
Just wanted to know what are peoples experience with the valve check and how many have had to do any adjustments.

Hi, the removal of the AIS was only going to be done with the valve check as it would look better and my mechanic said it would reduce the bill as it doesn't have to go back on.I am sure there is a lot of debate about the valve check at 25000 miles, it would certainly help me out at the moment.I suspect it is highly unlikely they would need doing, but?I am aiming to keep the bike for some years yet, so would get it done .Don't want  to change the oil my self to find it would have to change again for the valve check.

Hi,it is that time, 25000 mile service.
Spoke to my mechanic before covid and he was going to get everything needed to remove the AIS system,  now he says I have to get what's needed and is not being very helpful.
Looking on Pat's page he shows what he calls a carb intake boot which blanks the hole in the carb, unfortunately I can not find it on Fowlers Yamaha parts list, any Idea what the part number is and how to get one?Any idea what to do about the hole in the air box?Is there any thing else I need. The mechanic is going to crimp the ends of the tubes so don't need the bolts to fill the holes in the engine.
How important is it to have the valves checked at 25000 miles,  can I wait a few or thousands miles? It would certainly help me out at the moment as the bill is not going to be cheap.
Do you do a oil change at the same time as the valve check.? Because if I can get away with out the valve check I will do a oil change and small service  my self.

Have the same springs,  follow the recommended instructions. I am pleased with my bikes handling with a R6 rear shock
It did take a few adjustments to get it right . I followed all the recommended instructions with oil and levels.

Not sure how the crimping of the pipes work? How will it look? Do I need any thing to bung up any other holes? If it is easy to do why do people go to the lengths of tapping and screwing?

It is getting near that time. The bike is getting very near 24000miles, so will need the valve shims checked in a few months time.
I will not be doing the work my self. The mechanic who is doing the work says there is not much point putting back the AIS system and will obviously increase the price of the job.He has done the shim job many times he says and he usually just crimps the the pipes and thinks this is quick and easy .He has fitted the screws that need tapping first,  but thinks crimping is best.Where can I get a Ais removal kit from?
Is crimping any good?Having looked at the site there is a lot of information and some one on this site  used to make a kit, but it was a few years ago.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Ivan kit and revisit to cold starting
« on: 20 October 2019, 10:40:19 am »
My experience with cold stating is first turn on the ignition and give the pump time to prime. I noticed if you just turn on and fire straight away it would be difficult to start and bog down. May be I just have a slow priming pump, but it works for me and I use about half choke.
After I had my bike Ivanised I found the bike more difficult to start at first. I now find the bike a bit more temperamental and may need a few goes to start.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Rear wheel alignment
« on: 06 August 2019, 11:28:25 am »
Having tightened my chain the other day I was wondering how accurate the swing arm chain markings are? There seems to me to be to many variables with the manufacturer and welding etc for the markings to be accurate.
Having looked on line for a tool to check for  wheel alignment l was surprised by how many and how different there  are out there. The laser tool looks like the best, but at around £70 it is out of my price range.  l did find tools around £5 , but not sure if they work ,soIs it worth the bother of even buying a tool? Are the alignment marks close enough not to worry about it.Is there  a simple and easy option to check alignment.Does the wheel being slightly being out of alignment really matter?

A Fzs 1000 on Facebook today,  o5, 1 owner from new 2500 miles with many  extras and in very good condition.
Private seller wants £4000 ovno . He is confident he can get it.Looking on Ebay and once again there are a few over £3000, even 1 at £3500.Also noticed there are 4 06 registered bikes which surprised me, all of them over £3000.I bought my 06 registered bike in March 16 with 15000 miles for £3000. I have done all the usual mods and spent about £800, wonder what my bike is worth?

How much would a FZS 1000 be worth still in its crate?

I bet there is some one out there with a standard bike and all  covered and wrapped up.

I read a article on line about a very big auction in Las Vegas and it said the bikes have to be 100% original and any deviation effects the price.   custom, special build and modded bikes do not appreciate very much and don't attract the big interest.
My bike will always be just my fun  bike, don't see any fun riding a classic bike that you are to scared to use it because it might get dirty and effort its value. I don't like getting my bike dirty,  but hay just wash it and go out again.
Just wandering if any one is keeping there FZS 1000 all standard, immaculate and all covered up waiting for the price to go up?

I have seen many times a bike which could not be given away when they were new are now worth silly amounts of money .Seems odd to think it is simply that it was rare and a low volume seller that makes it worth more.

It has gone a bit off topic,  but hay so what.It does bring up another question,  with all the mods we have done to are bikes, exhausts ,paint work, screens etc does this distract the FZS 1000 from becoming a  future classic as we have modified them. When you see the older " classic " everyone wants them completely standard . Yes they can be but back, but than they are not as good as the modded bike. Does the FZS 1000 need to be modded to become the "future classic " or can a standard bike make it?

My bike was a bit of hit and miss to start, very temperamental. I never seemed to have the nack. You needed a bit of throttle,  not to much or it would over rev, to little it would not fire and a mix of choke thrown in.Since Ivanising it has improved but still temperamental and I still don't seem to have the nack.

I think you are the first guy I have heard say they are getting improved mpg after Ivanising.Mine dropped over 40 miles per tank.

BMCfaz has a point about high mileage bikes, we buy a car with not a lot of thought about mileage,  so why are we so up tight about high mileage bikes?
Surely a bike in great condition with higher mileage is better  than poor condition low mileage one.I my self would not even consider a higher mileage bike, but not with any logic.
At what point would you not buy a higher mileage FZS 1000?Can the FZS 1000 take the higher mileage and at what point would you trade in?
We here love are bikes,  but at what point would we let them go? And is it worth it considering the price we would get for them?

The price of a new bike for me is now totally out of range  and the ridiculous second hand prices are just getting beyond me also.Don't see me selling my FZS any time soon, in fact this may be the last bike I ever own. The only reason I can see to move on is the weight of the bike being a  issue in the future with my back problems.
Just wandering if the price of bikes will fall if and properly when the financial crisis hits us. Will this increase the price of the FZS or not?

As VNA says everything is becoming a future classic,  but what does a bike have to have to stand above the crowd?
The FZS 1000 to me is all the bike I need and having had a few bikes, don't see any other bike I need or more Importantly can afford.
Just wandering if the word "future classic " is a understatement?

Having seen  a recent advert for a FZS 1000 in a bike shop described as a "future classic " , just wondering   what you think?

I have to say this anti pollution thing is just away for cities to just make more money with out any actual effort.
I don't live in or  anywhere near London,  but have to say I am concerned about the future for normal working people,  this is just yet another tax on  the working class. Most people just can not afford to upgrade, I don't believe it has been thought through. Rant over. The price of  older bikes just seems to be getting higher with the price of new bikes just getting beyond  the reach most people.
Is there a future for " classic bikes " ? Will the FZS 1000 be on the list. ?

Been looking on Ebay etc and the price of FZS 1000 just seem to getting higher.
It seems it is being driven by dealers and bike shops pushing up the prices on all bikes. One dealer has described the FZS 1000 as a "future classic " so hopefully we are sitting on money in the bank?
