Under the tank. If you look in from the front you can just see the pulley on the motor. I would look at the starter solenoid etc as was mentioned earlier if it was the exup motor not being able to turn it would normally throw up an error on the tacho. Had similar happen on a cbr600 and it was the connector for the starter solenoid that was at fault.

It doesnt do the same self test as the gen1 on start up. Thought it was a good idea personally at least you know its working before you really need it.

My bro in law works for a Yamaha dealer I asked him the same question when I got my gen1 thought id broken it already  :lol . Apparently hes been asked that loads of times.
Think its to prove the fan works because there's no temp gauge if its faulty its going to be a bit warm by the time the light comes on.

Its a bit of a funny one I vaguely remember talking about that with a mate who does mot's if it has a grab rail it would pass without pegs! That was a few years ago so may have changed since then. Mind you its easy enough to stick them back on for the mot.

I was well impressed with the swap when I had my gen1. All I need is an R1 shock for my gen2 now!

My varadero has abs and linked brakes and bar doing it deliberately Iv never had the abs cut in while riding. Mind you since it weighs as much and stops as quickly as a super tanker in a panic braking situation it probably wouldn't make much difference  :b .

« on: 22 March 2013, 09:09:07 am »
Glad you got it sorted. I had pretty much the same problem with a 1200 bandit a couple of years ago. Had been starting it now and again through the winter and fouled the plugs. Now i take the battery out and leave it till the spring stick it back in add some fresh petrol and off the fazer goes.

I remember riding on sunny days although i think it was maybe 1987  :b .

My old R1 had the exup removed and  it ran fine. My bro in law works at a yamaha dealer they use wurth AL1100 to lube the exup kind of expensive for a small can but seems to work pretty well. Have given it a try so will see how it lasts. Its aluminium based and heat resistant up to 1100 degrees.

Read a lot about this on the american forums definately the spring rate thats wrong for the fazer I think it was a fireblade spring they were fitting to replace the bm one.

Buying the parts new will be mega expensive. I take it the cover for the shaft  has been plugged? I would go for a used set of down pipes and strip the valve out and install in your ones.

Did you end up with the fazer? Just about right as a swap wouldnt be putting any money towards it. Definately budget for a back shock since the stock one was crap when new and bound to be toast by now. Devilsyam is the man for an R6 shock upgrade money well spent.

« on: 08 November 2012, 08:27:25 am »
Im not sure if its the same kind of setup as the tdm900 in that when the wax melts it allows a small pin to move and reduces the fast running. On them its common for the pin to sieze in the housing so stops moving back out to the cold position so no choke or sticks in cold position and choke wont go off.
Pretty easy to fix on the tdm since it was easy enough to get to. Worth checking to see if its the same fault on your gen 2. Strip the end off clean up the pin and stick it back together. Hope this is of some help.

I have binned a fair few alarms over the years same old stuff. Draining the battery and not very reliable when they get old. The only time iv ever had one fitted was on my Benelli tornado rs. Couldnt get insurance for it at the time without a cat 1 alarm and immob. Had to get it fitted by the dealer so that the certificate was valid. Wasnt overwelmed by the experience worst £350 i ever spent.
If its not fitted by a dealer or doesnt have the certificate to prove it was the insurance co will ignore it as a security device.

Hi Steve
Mine wasnt showing the 7k tacho error when i turned the ignition on and reved fine in neutral but hit a wall at 6k ish. turned out the valve was siezed and the cables were too slack to stop the servo turning even though the valve wasnt moving. Worth checking even if only to rule it out.

Is it definately a misfire or does it just go really flat? Worth checking the exup valve is opening. Mine was siezed shut when i bought it and wouldnt pull past 6k.

Yes they all come with linked brakes. Never really found it a problem takes a bit of getting used to, plenty of torque and all day comfy. The vstrom is a bit sportier than the varadero and the 955i tiger is also worth a look although the triumph is a bit more expensive to service since the parts are a fair bit dearer.

No idea what its worth but youd probably get more if you return it to standard and flog the good bits on ebay.
On the new bike front Iv had a few of the bikes you are interested in. A pair of vstroms a varadero a 955i tiger and duc multistrada, definately would score the africa twin off the list as they are getting a bit long in the tooth not that fast and the seats a plank. Got to admit they still look fantastic though.
The most comfortable for me was the varadero its big and heavy but goes well for a fat lass. The early ones are 5 speed and carb the later ones 6 speed and fi. Read all sorts of horror stories that the early model are thirsty but I didnt find it too bad . The linked breaks make you lazy as i hardly ever used the front when a press on the back would provide plenty of stopping power  :) .
Would test ride as many as you can and see what you like best.

Had a loan of the local triumph dealers demo bike when my daytona was in to get some work done and couldn't say i was that impressed with the speed triple. It was nice enough but didn't make me want to rush out and buy 1.  :\ Kinda the same with the 1050 tiger which is why i still have my old girlie and the fazer.

I fitted good quality ss will def be keeping on top of maintaining the exup. Not a hard job did it on my R1 before. It would appear that the prev owner or the dealer i bought it from couldnt be bothered fixing it so slackened the cables right off to hide the fault  :( .
