It needed a new rectifier. First mechanic didn't catch it.

I went back to lock up the bike a couple of hours later. It started and showed the orange engine light. I considered trying to ride it home but after about 3 minutes, again dash went blank, then total loss of power again and cut out. Will have it recovered later today and see what they find.

Any experience of this or suggestions what it could be before I go back to the mechanic greatly appreciated -

I don't ride much in winter but a couple of months ago I rode into the city centre probably early February. While riding slowly in heavy traffic around the streets, my bike just died. Dash went blank and restart attempts just resulted in useless clicking sound. I had it recovered and checked. They said it was just an old battery and changed it and checked everything. Does that sound right ? I though once you have a running engine it should be a self sustaining system.

Anyhow, two days ago I went to ride into work. Again zero electric power and totally blank dash. I charged the battery overnight for 12 hours and in the morning it showed "Charged and maintaining" on the charger and the bike started (I didn't ride anywhere). Now this morning I went for a ride along the coast and after about 5 miles, same thing again. Down shifted to 2nd and slowed to let an oncoming car pass at which point bike again died. I had enough battery to attempt a few restarts but not enough to get going again, managed a few rotations and then useless clicking again. I have left it there while I decide what to do. Go back with another new battery, or have it recovered some place else maybe..

FZ6 / Fazer / Rattle when coasting
« on: 10 June 2023, 12:56:06 pm »
During the ride home from work this past Tuesday I noticed a rattling noise which only manifests when the clutch is fully disengaged, like when I'm on the brakes and downshifting multiple times before a red light stop. I didn't notice anything on the Tuesday morning ride in. There's nothing when the bike is idling (clutch in or out) or under power. I feel it's coming from the clutch or engine area but it's hard to isolate it as I have to be moving to hear it. Bike is an 08 FZ6 S2 model. I'll get it looked at in the next couple of weeks but thought I's see if you foccers had any ideas what it might be and how serious, as in, should I stop riding until it's sorted?

Hey thanks for all the advice. So I dropped it into another larger outfit who do a lot of yammies a couple of weeks back. They checked the cooling system, ran it for an hour, told me the coolant is circulating fine, fan coming on over 100, and off as expected once it's done its job. Found no problem with the water pump. They refilled it and made some comment about what was in there maybe wasn't the best coolant. 5 or 6 rides later there's been no further hiss and spills, so honestly not sure now what the hell it was. My initial guy also said he didn't like the sound of the engine but I have read on other forums that the Fazer has a rep for a slight rattle in the engine and that it's normally nothing to worry about?

Thanks guys so much for the tips. Yeah I verified the mileage is genuine at least. I will get a pro to do a full check of the cooling system next week and get a second opinion.

Where is the coolant coming from? The overflow hoses from the rad cap and coolant bottle or somewhere else?
Pretty sure I saw some spurting out of here, it was also spilling out from somewhere below. I didn't manage to jump off in time to see exactly where

Also this overflow looks melted ?

Do you have oil in the water ? (colour frothy etc)
Sorry not sure how to tell/ where to check

Do you have water in the oil? Milky oil mayo on the cap etc?
No

Presumably the bike has a temperature gauge or warning light… was it reading hot?
Not especially - it was reading 97C when it spilled this week

Does the radiator get hot?
Pretty sure it does

Had the fan come on?
Not during the spill it hadn't but it does come on at other times yes.

Does the water pump work?
Sorry not sure how to tell/ where to check

What colour is the expansion tank?
Not sure what that is (yet) but if its the same as the reservoir, that is an opaque white and I've never been able to take a reading from it between the mix max lines. Not sure if that's normal or not.

Is there excessive water in the exhaust, i.e. it's rusty inside, is there a lot of steam (condensation) after a few minutes of starting the bike especially in the mornings. I not talking about the normal condensation when it's first started I'm talking about a second period of stream a few minutes after the first?
No, don't think so

Have you been losing coolant over this 6 months since the 1st hiss?
No just a couple of spills 6 months ago, then nothing until it was refilled last week

Has the coolant temp warning ever come on?
Don't think so.

General / Head gasket busted?
« on: 19 August 2020, 06:14:45 pm »

I dropped my 08 FZ6/S2 into a local shop near work last week for a stuck brake light and got him to do the fluids as it'd been over a year since anyone looked at it. I mentioned that I'd had a bit of coolant hiss and spill about 6 months ago but had put it down to an air bubble. He topped it up. A couple of days later the bike dumped a load of the new coolant in a big hissy fit, out top and bottom of hoses when it was switched off.

When I rang my guy to tell him this and get advice he's saying the head gasket is most likely busted, that it would cost upwards of 5-600 quid to repair possibly more because there could be further damage in the heads and that he thinks it might be better to get a new engine !

This is a pretty huge shock given that 5 days ago I thought I was the proud owner of a mint condition bike with only 20K miles on. Now I might have scrap on my hands. Actually he questioned the mileage also and said he thinks it's probably clocked, and that these engines shouldn't blow gaskets until 100K.

What do you guys think. Is this the only possible reason for the coolant dumping incidents ? What would you do ?

Yeh actually I sent a message through their website last week and they didn't reply. I can't even find any reference to this helmet on their site or the internet for that matter. Maybe I will try again or phone in.

« on: 03 September 2019, 02:46:15 pm »

Sorry it's not really Fazer specific but I've had my helmet for around 3 months and the visor has developed a crack from being slammed shut (lesson learned). When I bought the helmet it was on sale as a discontinued model (nother lesson learned).

Now I can't seem to find a visor which matches it exactly and searching the web brings up nothing (Helmet seems to be an "E3" model according to the stickers). If you see the picture, the visor has some plastic teeth which I can't seem to find in visors in online shops. Would this probably work it's the closet looking one I can find :-  https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/243425 ?

General / Best Top Box
« on: 29 August 2019, 04:36:06 pm »
Hi Fazoids - Any suggestions/ recommendations/ experiences with top boxes. What looks and works best on the Fazer? I'm thinking of putting one on my FZ6 S2 (08) to add a bit of much needed practicality at the shops and for storing my helmet.

Bit confused though with the various things I see for sale on websites. I gather most people go for Givi and I would need to buy a mounting kit which seems to include arms and a rack. Do I also need to purchase separately a specific plate to fix the box onto as these appear to be quite expensive. I see stuff like M5 or M6M plates going for the £50 mark.

For example I was looking at this but it's not really clear what you get: https://www.louis.ie/artikel/givi-monorack-topcase-carrier-fuer-yamaha-fz6-fazer-s2-abs/10023575?filter_bike_id=1894&filter_article_number=10023561&list=56d92b46b6bb2957551eaede786b6407

Thanks for any help!

FZ6 / Fazer / Chain rust on the inside
« on: 30 May 2019, 09:03:27 pm »
Just got my first proper bike, FZ6 S2 (08) a few weeks back, having been on a Vespa previously, so total noob about a lot of stuff but learning as quick as I can. My question is about my chain (pic posted). Is it OK to have this rusty appearance on the inside? And if not what should be done about it. Outside of chain looks perfectly fine being a nice gunmetal grey colour.
