General / Re: Laying the bike up for winter
« on: 01 September 2012, 09:27:16 pm »
Last ride today :( still, hopefully the worst of the winter will be gone by mid feb...

Filled it up with the expensive shell and whacked some 'additive' in too.

I didn't ride it for about 5 months last year and it started fine, this is just planned so I might as well try :)

Going to leave the battery in it, it's stuck on the drive (front door measures 73cm, handlebars are 77cm...) and the immobiliser can't be a bad thing.
Didn't drain the carbs, looked too fiddley and didn't bother with any of that squirting oil in the cylinders either, far too much trouble :)

On centre stand and front wheel on blocks and that's about it, except it being chained to ground anchor through swinging arm and engine bar (seperate chains), disc lock on front, chain to solid fence through rear wheel. It's not going anywhere...

That's pretty much all I've done, gave it a good clean the other day which made me feel better for leaving the poor girl :(

I'll let you all know how overgrown my brother lets it get!

So you didn't ride it over 'summer' now you'll ride it over winter? Brilliant, bet the roads will be empty (and drier)  :lol

Ha, I was joking matey, (this is genuine, and not just because I don't think I'll be top at the end)

Also, I wouldn't be able to contribute, I'm off to New Zealand for 5 months next week, so probably won't be updating it at all (not that I ever do...)

Still, I reckon the winner could have a custom thingy or something? can't just keep them to the photoey people?

I reckon there's going to be a few of these topics coming, so I may as well start us off!

I'm off to New Zealand for 6 months in 2 weeks time, so what do we all do to keep our bikes minty fresh whist not in use?

I've got what's in the Haynes manual, but does anyone have anything extra they do?

Thanks in advance

Careful, I placed mine in that really handy void, it turned out to be the air intake... Didn't affect mine at all, but Mike told me off when he fitted Mr Ivans wonderful kit!

Have heard stories of it revving out lower than it should and generally being strangled :\

Stupid Yamaha making it so inviting...

Looks a really good setup though, I've got the 'normal' ones and they work brilliantly :)

« on: 09 August 2012, 01:55:15 pm »
As above really, I had a square eye 600, went to a gen 1 and all I really noticed was it was much faster throughout the rev range and I didn't have to change gear as much :)

Just got 41 MPG, seems about average to me, I got very similar on the 600 so you might get more :)

Only thing I have as a con is the seat is much more comfortable on the 600 for both rider and pillion, the gf and I came back from France, did about 450-500 miles without stopping and were fine, 150 miles on the 1000 and we're waddling round (not good for pro bike points... :\ )

But yeah, I'm glad I upgraded :D

Both wires are black coming from the back of the bulb, then go into a connector further down where they turn black/whatever (think it depends on the year) Just check with a multimeter (with the ignition on!)

I'm by no means an expert, but I'm pretty sure if they're getting someone in/ someone else is doing your job, you've got a case...
Don't quote me on that though ;)

Any lock / chain will deter an opportunist, but a professional thief will have it whatever you do.

True, just whack a disc lock on it to stop the opportunistic buggers and get a low excess, crap looking bike cover and an alarm :)

« on: 17 July 2012, 04:51:06 pm »
Just got back, saw it in Tonbridge which wasn't on the route, we got it during its lunch break or something... was good, shame to see everyone then rushing back to their cars instead of browsing the shops... all because of the charges to park :\

Was good though, Kelly Holmes doing her bit and they had someone who'd carried the torch in the 1948 Olympics with his torch too, much prefer the older design... It was still very busy considering it had been planned a week ago and wasn't advertised on the route website...

I would say head west out of Fort William to Mallaig, take the ferry across to Skye.
The A830 along the coast is one of the nicest roads I've ever been on, this just a day after the A82!

(looking at your route, I can't tell if you're going along this route... if you are, then carry on ;) )

The road from Fort William to Inverness is really good, but when I went, (about this time of year 2009) there were loads of coaches and not many safe overtaking places (2 up + luggage taken in to account) and while the GF enjoyed it, I found myself getting quite frustrated I couldn't enjoy it, always looking to do more than 30... and not wanting to be behind a wide load with wide loads coming the other way, on narrow roads.

The north loop to Durness is lovely too (in tough biker way) if you're up there for any length of time, take a peak in Smoo cave for a nice 15 mins of the bikes

So yeah, a lot of blabber about not much at all

It's coming near here tomorrow and was wondering how busy the torch is?
cause considering parking in the next town and getting the train (no chance of bike, family all going)

Thanks :)

« on: 19 June 2012, 03:12:13 pm »
I've got a friend who works for halfords and he's just as frustrated as you!

The manager that couldn't fit that ladies wipers - Health and Safety. They need the trained member of staff to do it or they're not insured against anything going wrong, if she (or bigralphie) had been a mystery shopper etc, he'd have been fired.

A lot of them don't know their crankshafts from their coils, but a fair few do   the system they use is awful.
eg. I bought a sidelight for my mums corsa (trade discount card) the little card said E34 or whatever, I bought it, took it outside and lo and behold, it didn't fit. Took it back in, assistant said 'yep, 05 corsa you'll need an E22.' Same happened with a wiper blade for an Accord.

I guess this defensive rant is just a point to say, yes they can be crap, but when they do know what's going on, they don't deserve all the hate.
The fact you've all got stories show you've all used them, and I'm sure most of you will use them again because it is pretty convenient (when it fits :) )

Except their bikes, they're shit

Thanks Solorider, I'll give that a go when it's not raining :)

Not sure I'll bother with the new one, now I know it happens, I'll just dab a bit of rear brake if there's someone up my arse :)

rjd, yeah, I'm more an engine braking man, so mechanical braking is never very harsh, as such I prefer to use the front brake, much more feel :) (although obviously I'll use rear brake in emergency situations/ pillions/ etc.)

Just thought I'd put it out on the forum, other members might wanna check as I've never seen anything about it on here and wasn't sure if they all do that, only having one fazer to hand!

« on: 09 June 2012, 11:27:00 am »
I found out yesterday that my brake light doesn't come on until the lever is a significant distance in (i.e already braking)

Haynes manual says this switch isn't adjustable but I was wondering if anyone's given it a go?

If not, I'd have a look at yours too, don't want to be braking without telling the idiots behind you :)

Very nicely done by the looks of it but filtering could be a bit of an issue..

« on: 24 May 2012, 09:16:18 am »
Did it yesterday, I did it so the chain was just not touching the swingarm.
Would have done it so the tightest spot was just shy of the rubber (WHEEY) but I've got a scotoiller so don't have any tight spots  8)
I should also say, this is the first time I've done it since getting the bike 2 years ago (I've checked it though!!)

I've got the S4 red (I think) and only problem I've had with it is the remote can be a bit tempremental sometimes. Won't work inches from the bike...

I just keep pushing the button and it eventually sorts itself (probably an old battery, I've had it over 2 years and never changed it)

In terms of affecting the bike battery, it drained it over winter, when I didn't ride it for 5 months, but it'll start after 3 months not touching it :)

Although all this is pretty relative, I only found out a few months ago if you push the button to set the alarm, it sets the immobiliser and the alarm, if you let it set itself, it only sets the immobiliser... The alarm still goes off if you turn the key in the ignition though!

So in conclusion - Just the immobiliser lasts between 3-6 months on a 1/2 year old motorcycle battery

:)

Also, the bike looks good, but you've been conned, looks like it's a gen 2 to me....

Hi,
No, they haven't been dropped. I took the measurement from the point in your picture, raised the forks 10mm measured from the top yolk to the indented ring on the fork (both sides!)

(this drops the bike down a bit, think you've got a bit confused by the terminology of dropping the forks - They actually stay in the same place!!)
Hope that helps :)

not sure how accurate it'll be though :)

plus andriod you can play angry birds for free... Think you have to pay on iphone?

If you're not fussed though, I'd look at O2 simplicity, you just pay a rolling monthly contract for the sim card atn various extras, use your own phone.
http://www.o2.co.uk/tariffs/simplicity

Do look at Tesco, they use the same network as O2 (as my little mind understands it) so if you're happy with the signal you get now, Tesco might be cheaper (plus clubcard points - how exciting)
