Gen 1 Fazer 1000 won't start.
« on: 14 May 2018, 07:43:28 pm »
Hi guys,

After doing some work on my Fazer, (changing a leaky sump and replacing the exup valve) I just can't get the bike to start, I have a spark from all the ht leads and I have cleaned the carbs, the fuel pump is good, the engine spins over ok and I get the odd cough, but it just doesn't want to go, anything I am missing ?

Thanks Mick.

Did you remember to put the choke cable back on - assuming you made sure it wasn't broken.
I know it's a daft question but I had to ask it.

Yes choke cable is all hooked up, the carbs were pretty clean when I pulled them, I've put new plugs in and even cut a little off each ht lead to rule out poor connection and as I said I'm seeing a spark on each lead, but not exactly a big fat juicy spark. Battery seems good and cranks the engine ok, just at a loss really.

Yes fuel tap is on, bike smells of fuel after a bit of cranking, so even though there is a spark from the plugs when removed this is breaking down under compression ?
The ignition switch is very sticky, could this cause starting problems ?
Sorry for all the mider, just that I'm off work this week and was hoping to get the old girl on the road.
Please keep the suggestions coming as it may just be something daft that I've overlooked.

I know the engines all act in a different way but when I have not used the bike for a while I pull the choke cable and turn the engine over with no throttle. If it catches you can slowly close the choke. It could be flooded!

if you`ve `had the plug leads off might be worth checking they have gone back in the right order , worth taking a closer look at that "sticky" ignition switch aswell ....
One, is never going to be enough.....

Every now and then mine is a bugger to start and I have to feather the throttle just a little until it catches. No idea why. Maybe the plugs get wet or something, but feathering it just off the stop with no choke will eventually get it going and it's fine for months thereafter. I'd love to know what it is.
