General / Re: Carbs Vs Fuel Injection
« on: 26 July 2019, 11:49:50 pm »
I have only ever driven one FI bike...a Honda 600 hornet. It felt lightweight compared with the FZS and definitely didn't have the same GUTS....
but that's what I expected, so I continued to believe that carbs is the WTG.....but over the last few months I've had some carb issues which involved taking them off the bike several times... tedious, especially if the problem isn't resolved and u have to do it again. Now i'm seeing tacho diagnostics indicating a TPS problem....cheapest replacement TPS is £100...so is it worth it...??  am thinking the answer is to trade up to fuel injected Fazer 1000..??
The same power and accelleration with less hassle and expense...? :evil

Hi Foccers....my rev counter needle has started to jump up and down...and the odometer is flashing from ODO to CLOCK to TRIP...
is this a fault code or just a FAULT.....?! :o :rollin :\

UPDATE..... went to check the TPS adjustment this AM...summat funny going on...no neutral light...no power....LOOSE BATTERY CONNECTION...!

everything now operating normally. Lovely sunny day, perfect for THRASHING :) :rollin :lol

Seems a bit off for the fan to come on so soon...the fan only ever comes on for me if I'm stopped in traffic for AGES.... :b
First thing is to check the level of coolant...?

Ho Dude
I recorded a video but it's too big to upload....
discovered why the bike seemed ROUGH and was LABOURING a bit, even after setting up carbs. The rear brake was binding.... :rolleyes
All it needed was a drop of oil on the brake pedal PIVOT and LINKAGE and now the brake is working perfectly...and the bike is running better than ever.... :D :rollin :lol   HAPPY DAYS....!

So.....taking carbs off, giving them a good clean and setting the butterfly valves all the same visually, and putting the pilot screws to factory setting...(two turns out) does a pretty good job for the amateur home mechanic.

EEEK....!
realised as i was putting carbs back that trying to adjust idle speed from the handlebar was going to leave me with no FREE PLAY...so back off again and improvised an idle speed adjuster.....have to reach in under to get at it but it's OK.
Bike is now running pretty good so that's it.... 8)
NO MORE MESSING :evil

OK THANKS....
removed carbs (AGAIN)...everything looks perfectly OK...! ;)
Did the bench balance with drill bit, managed to break off the idle adjustment cable thing. (WOT a poor bit of engineering..!)...but I suppose I can set the idle speed at the handlebar...
backed the idle setting off all the way and gave each of the pilot screws a quarter turn in...hoping for the best :evil

ER....WOT IS the old drill bit method....?! :book

I,m ready to remove the carbs (yet again)...I suppose u can see well enuf if all the butterfly valves are the same...?

Yes I have had the carbs out and split...I think they went back with the linkages correct...but the only way to really tell is to take the carbs out again :'(

I used a home made MANOMETER with two bottles half full of pink parrafin...crude but it does work

Hi Foccers
I had me carbs out recently to fix a BOGGING DOWN problem... cleaned all and put pilot screws to factory setting.
engine is running OK now but a bit ROUGH..
so decided to balance the carbs....I found 1 and 2 so far out that no matter how much i adjusted 1 was still pulling more than 2...
so where do i start with this DILEMMA... :o :rollin :\

Hi Foccers...WOT IS hg and how do u measure it...??!!
I'm having similar carb probs... :'( bike is running ....but ROUGH. I went to great lengths building the home-made MANOMETER...
only to find that i couldn't get 1 & 2 into balance no matter how much I adjusted the screw...of course I unscrewed it all the way out and
had to buy a special torch (EBAY) and long reach screwdriver (LIDL) ....and had to glue the screw to the screwdriver to get it back in.
Depressing....... am thinking of upgrading (?) to fuel injection....I'm reluctant to even give this problem to the bike shop...do they know how to do it properly...do they give a FOC...?!!? :z :rollin :evil

PS i also adjusted the pilot screw to two turns out...like it says in the (YAMAHA) workshop manual :book

I don't know of the seals in the rear master cylinder have ever been changed...is it a difficult job....??

Yes it makes sense that the bar must be loose in order to adjust the chain...but i never did loosen it, and looks like no one else did either...i couldn't open the bolts...had to cut one off....now they are OK and in future if i'm adjusting the chain i will loosen them off.........U live and learn  :'( :rollin :D

Thanks Bandit...i will order new seals anyway...and have a look with the caliper in place...
If i do take the caliper off...do i just undo the banjo and let the fluid drain out...?? 8)

Hi Foccers..
I notice that my rear brake is not working too good...then when i stand on it something seems to move, and then CLUNKS back when i come off the brake... also i notice that the rear disc is VERY hot after a spin...even tho i mostly use the front brake...any thoughts...? :guitar

Actually i had this same prob a year ago...and burnt my thumb quite badly on a RED HOT disc... :eek ..  paid €300 to highly reputable shop in Dublin for fixing..
.i thought at the time...JAYSUS...!
it wud have been cheaper to fit a new caliper...???!!

Had so much grief  :'( getting the rear caliper bar off that i cuddent face any more...taking the swing arm off looks like a big job to me...?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Non standard chain & sprockets
« on: 07 July 2019, 03:50:06 pm »
DAM....i got the +1 and -1 sprockets and a new chain...and joined them with the tool that they give u with the set...
Only realised after that the chain goes thru the frame around the swing arm pivot...so had to drill open the joiner link..ruining it (JAYSUS they're hard)
and now waiting for new joiner from ebay... :eek
Having joined the chain you could still have fitted it by removing the swinging arm and used the opportunity to give all the linkages etc a good clean and re-greased all the pivots. Just think how much better you would have felt after doing that for the bike.  :)
I found your observations on the revised gearing interesting as I might be thinking of new chain and sprockets myself before too long. The original chain has now done 56,000 miles and still seems o.k. but the rear sprocket is starting to show signs of wear. Now on it's third front sprocket. I agree that first gear seems too low setting off most of the time and having come from a single cylinder bike I was always going for another gear when up to speed on a motorway. I guess I've got used to it now and I'm happy to let it spin away.

Yes im sure i wud have felt VERY GOOD had i removed the swinging arm etc...but im working outside on the path so its a bit AWKWARD...I need a bike lift... and a workshop... i didn't consider just changing one sprocket...something was sticking so I just binned the lot and replaced everything...after 30K mls :rolleyes :rollin :lol

Hi Gab
i make it 57mm in diameter.......i'm not sure a standard hose clip/jubilee ring would fit tho...because the Yamaha clip is narrower...
might be best just to buy the actual Yam part...?  :b 8) ;)

« on: 29 June 2019, 10:23:03 pm »
Arf...
Just changed the chain and sprockets on my 600. Cuddent figure out why i wasn't getting enuf slack to get the link in, having loosened off the back wheel and the adjusters.. :'(   ......the arm that holds the rear caliper in position has to come off as well....an absolute bitch, the bolts were so tight i had to cut one off.
Anyway i got the thing together and went about tensioning the chain via the adjusters...i just went by the guides on the swing arm and then spun the wheel to check that the chain is running sweetly. I think that's as good as ur going to get by any method :lol :rollin :rolleyes

OK Foccers...i fitted the non-std chain and sprockets...(+1 front and -1 rear)
Bike immediately feels more relaxed...longer first gear is less frantic, and cruising along at 55/60mph in 6th @ about 4,500 revs is just fine...no torque problems, she still pulls away LUSTILY in 6th from around 3000rpm.
Need to try it on a motorway but i'm sure slightly lower revs is better...i always felt the revs were too high at motorway speed.
But i'm a light foccer...about 10st. ....and i never carry a passenger :lol :D :)

PS yes you do need to undo the bar that holds the rear caliper...a bitch...I had to cut off one of the bolts
