General / Honda Fireblade
« on: 13 July 2018, 07:30:36 am »
just wanted to share this with you, I have just acquired a 2001 929. A work colleague parked it up 10 year ago and kept in his garage. You can imagine what I was like going to view it for the 1st time, rather nervous, I was probably going to buy it any condition as I knew he just wanted it gone to a good home. Lovely guy and gorgeous smart wife, sweet little boys.

Well it was jammed in next to a ride on lawnmower and a big trailer, on stands, no cover on.
Tyres pretty flat so not easy to push around.
We dragged it outside, put a fresh battery on and checked the tank, bone dry. Sloshed in some petrol, stuck it in 6th and rotated the rear wheel a couple of times. Oil looked golden in the sight glass.
Turn the key, no fuel pump prime, clocks showed 9300 miles from new. It’s dusty and some of the untreated stuff like the gear shifter rod are a bit oxidised but it looks like new bike.
Fired the started over and obviously it’s wont go as the pumps not working.
So we whip the airbox cover off and I ask him for a plant sprayer, clean it out and put some petrol in, spray this down the throttle bodies and it catches!
So I say to my friend, that’s enough for me I’ll take it.
Few days later we pick it up in my mates van, epic journey as the M40 was closed and were stuck for 2 hours at Warwick. Anyway we get back at 1 am and I stick it in the garage, (FZS 1000) is living in the back garden for a bit).  Ordered new fuel pump and filter, oil n filter, I have coolant. Replaced these parts, although I got the old pump working it was a little seized is all but new pump will be more reliable. Fired it up and it runs ok.
Seemed to be missing on one or two cylinders so I pull the plugs, original denso from 2001, iridium standard. So I get new plugs anyway, check the coil sticks, seem ok. Off we go again and it’s not really any different so I check some redex in. I take off the injector manifold and check them, they all spray fuel ok. I spray carb cleaner through the last one on the end, and swop 1 for 2. Crank it over again and it’s still cold on 1 and not so hot on 4. So I give it a good handful and rev it up, that seemed to do the trick.
Changed the oil and the filter was also the Honda original 2001, looked brand new on outside. Oil was a little dirtier than I though. Coolant was fluorescent green, not seen that before.
Quick call to insurance I discover they fkd up and the FZS was not insured from May so I have been riding without cover! That’s another story after I’ve calmed down, call footman James as they don’t use ncd (I’m using it on the FZ1), put both the blade and the FZS on with them. Booked mot for this morning, realised the number plate I got is not going to pass, so quick trip to Halfords.
Will update post later.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Bogging down
« on: 21 June 2018, 08:41:54 pm »
well bugger, after removing the carbs and airbox Tuesday I cleaned the outsides of the carbs as well as I could then took off the float bowls one at a time, took off the jets and nozzles only and gave them a blast of carb cleaner. I didn’t take off the floats or the carb tops. Now when I’m riding it bogs down over 6k revs in top or 9k revs in 2nd or 3rd. Is this likely to be carbs blocked or an air leak? It rides ok at low revs.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Satan’s 666 FZ1 shock adaptor
« on: 23 April 2018, 08:04:56 pm »
I’ve bought a used adaptor and 07 R1 shock off of FZ10 USA forum. Arrived last week, fitted up in about 10 minutes . Took it for a test ride today, it’s taller at the rear, about 3/4” more better ride quality. I’m riding at Donington tomorrow, shame it probably gonna be damp.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Power commander 3 not working
« on: 15 March 2018, 05:54:50 pm »
does anyone on here have any experience with these? Just got one for my FZ1, connected up to laptop to check what map was in it but won’t communicate as it needs external power. so I took sellers word that the map is off a FZ1 and an Akro can, can’t do any harm . Wired it up to the bike and fitted the o2 eliminator plug, bike won’t start. Just cranks, pc leds flash then go off. Tried to connect to the laptop with it on the bike, won’t communicate.
Have connected 9v battery to pc3 and tried to communicate with laptop, no deal.

Am at al loss really as it’s plug n play and the seller assures me it was fully working.

Seller is from Stoke way so fairly local, I’ve asked him if he can help.

In the meantime can anyone else help?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / FZ1 chain adjusters
« on: 13 February 2018, 09:20:40 pm »
Just swopped my back tyre on my gen 2 and the swing arm is sort of open inside, not a fully welded closed up box. The chain adjuster bolts are completely exposed to the elements behind the swing arm . My bike is
LOw miles and looks like very dry ones so they were in good nick . I've coated them up in copper grease now. Just thought I'd mention it if other gen 2 riders are bothered.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Winter maintenance time
« on: 09 January 2018, 05:50:01 pm »
Decided it starts today , list of jobs: remove AIS, check valve clearances, remove carbs and airbox, remove exhaust and paint engine, replace carb to head rubbers, balance carbs.

So far I've followed the guides on pats page, dropped the coolant - it was just rusty water no antifreeze, removed the AIS and tapped the exhaust ports. That was a pig of a job with such restricted space, I feared my tap was going to snap but I managed it in the end and cut down some M8 cap screws to 10mm to go in.

Front of the engine is filthy so I'm soaking the exhaust nuts overnight as they will have to come off for access.

Does anyone have a blanking cap for the airbox I could buy?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Headstock adjustment
« on: 02 June 2017, 02:05:49 pm »
I have the factory manual download and it's not clear to me how this is done. On my other bikes it was loosen lower fork clamp bolts then tighten up basically pulling the lower fork clamp up towards the top yoke.

Is it the same? Cos the manual isn't clear at all.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Live wire
« on: 21 May 2017, 08:55:55 pm »
I was changing my rear fender for a new one from Fowlers and I noticed a bolt sticking out the rear bodywork on the LHS. I was horrified to find this unisulated bolt wired direct to the live terminal of the bike! Why the food would someone do this? It was obviously thought about as they had wound a piece of 2.5mm red insulate ire round the live terminal and taped it up. Anyway it's off before it had a chance to short the battery out.  New fender in so the battery has somewhere to sit securely at last. I'm slowly getting the bike back to standard.

The battery was originally wedged in with rags and both terminals were insulated with children's shoe insoles ffs.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Chain adjuster found snapped and bodged
« on: 10 May 2017, 09:58:49 pm »
come to change the rear tyre and a PO has fitted stainless bolts without coppers lip and its snapped on them. So what did they do? Left the stud, put a nut on it then screwed a short bolt in it! You can't adjust the chain!

So I need someone to remove the broken stud for me. As I don't have a welder.
