FZS600 Fazer / Getting the most out of my Fazer

So I'm planning on buying myself a new bike in a couple of years, but I have to save up some money first.
Meanwhile I want to get the most out of my Fazer since I'll be driving it a lot more.


I'm doing the routine maintenance as I should.
I have also upgraded the lights and the rear brake.


Trying to figure out a saving plan while keeping my chin up and having fun with the Fazer.


What other things can I do to improve the ride from cheap to expensive?

FZS600 Fazer / Knocking from chain, worse when turning

So the bike has developed a knocking-"feel" from the chain, and it gets worse whenever I turn hard left/right in slow speeds.


Could it be anything other than the need for a new chain?

I remember reading another thread somewhere that the voltage was too low for the H4 bulb to operate optimally.
So I bought some stuff and got to work. Total 20 quid perhaps.

Hello,

How would you compare my running idle with an optimal setting?



I have tried balancing the carbs, the spark plugs are very new (NKG CR9E).

FZS600 Fazer / Valve clearances

Just checked the valves on my 2000 FZS 600. 57000km. All within spec. Altough Cylinder 1 Exhaust was at minimum. And Cylinder 2 showing some higher numbers on exaust.

Can anyone explain a little bit why C2's exhaust is a lot higher than C1 and C4? Should i check again in ... 15000km instead of next 42000? Is it possible that they would go faster out of spec seeing this? Can C1 Exhaust go below spec soon? What's standard from factory, high or low?

What I'm asking really is how do valves live their small little lives :)

FZS600 Fazer / Had to refill, burning oil? Normal?

So I've driven around  3500km (2000 miles) since my oil change and I noticed that the red oil lamp briefly lit up while giving the bike the beans. It lit up just for a split second.

Later I stopped at a parking lot, put it on the center stand and waiter ~10 minutes. I could barely see the oil in the glass.

How much is between max/min in the sight glass and is it normal for the FZS to burn oil?

FZS600 Fazer / Chirping / squealing ?

While driving my last trip I noticed an intermittent chirping / squealing at around 45mph. It's not connected to the engine revs but it seems to be speed dependent. I can't hear it above 55 and not under 35(ish). It's hard to pinpoint the sound as there's so much wind noise. But it does seem to come from the front/beneath me.


Has anyone else had this sound? Wheel bearings? Brakes? I'm not sure, I can't find any noise when turning the wheels by hand at standstill.

FZS600 Fazer / Fitting after market side fairings

When I bought the bike I got some extra side fairings. They were in pretty rough shape so I sanded them down, filled in the gaps and gave it a (poor) paint job.

This is how it's supposed to look:


I do not have any part number, the kit is probably as old as the bike and the previous owner is unavailable so I'm trying my luck with you guys.


It's fitted with five holes, one at the top fairing, one on the radiator, one on the frame next to the exhausts and one on lower frame.
I got four of 5 holes mounted, but the one next to the exhaust is giving me a great deal of trouble.



Try as I might I could only get it within 1cm. I don't believe I'm supposed to use that much force to fit something, I must be doing something wrong.

Hello, I just got my new (old) 2000 fazer! Loving it this far.


The bike has ridden 32000 miles. In the last 6 years it has been driven 6000 miles in total, less in the last couple of years as the previous owner got a new bike.


I don't have access to it's service history but it's last service was 26000 miles. With a recent oil change around 31000 miles.


The bike drives nicely, no oil on the forks, breaks are good and chain/sprockets are good.


At idle the bike runs a little rough.


The bike is used so it has some visual imperfections. I'll get around to that second :)


My plan now is to:
 - Change the spark plugs (NKG CR9E)
 - Change the oil (Castrol Power1 10w-40)
 - Change the oil filter (Snell filter)
 - Bleed the brakes and replace with DOT 5.1 brake fluid.
 - Balance the carbs (just ordered CarbTune)
 - Change the cooling fluid

I'm not brave enough to check/do the valve clearance, so I might put it in a dealer if it still runs rough after doing the above list.

Anything else I should do?
