Maybe mods can move the tribute messages onto a a more appropriate heading as I know he'd like that.

Copied from the FZ1OA, a lovely tribute from Mike ( Falcon )

I first met Luke back in 2003 when he brought his Fazer Thou to me to have Ivan's slip-on kit fitted. His was probably the third or fourth installation I did. Back then he was a big guy, if you get my drift. Suffice to say that the stock rear shock wasn't up to Luke's specifications.

He lived just the other side of town from me and the next time I saw him, he'd installed a nitrous kit on the bike and had it over-bored to 1060cc. Figure 170bhp at the rear wheel when he hit the gas button. Still on stock suspension. Fair to say that Luke wasn't too fussed about dragging pegs but liked straightline 'go'.

We saw each other on and off numerous times in the following years, even though I'd moved to Spain in 2004. Every Gen 1 he bought - and there were many - he got me to 'Ivanize' for him, even though his spannering skills were superior to mine. I spent many days working out of his little lock-up garage in Bristol, a swarf-strewn, oily rag filled place, with old carpets on the floor and boxes of bits on every surface. Those bits included all the genius ideas he had for improving or just blinging up the mighty Thou.

Dogged with health issues for all the time I knew him, I never once heard him complain. He just took what life threw at him and looked to make it better, for himself and for his family. His love for Sue and his kids was clear to see, as strong as his love for life.

There was no such thing as 'can't be done' in Luke's mindset. Got a health problem? Deal with it. Want a holiday in the USA? Make it happen. Feel like fitting a single-side swingarm to Fazer Thou? Get 'er done! We've all seen the amazing things he did with his bikes, and not just the Fazers. He just loved taking something and making it better. Better looking, better performing, better to own. He was proud of his creations but very modest about his achievements.

His local motorcycle main dealership almost banned him from their sales floor because he was forever there measuring up suspension units and trying to figure out which shock or whatever could be grafted on to his latest project. The R6 shock mod which hundreds of us now enjoy came about from Luke scrabbling around underneath pretty much every mark of sportsbike that Fowlers had in stock.

I could go on recalling the feats of this great guy and those who were lucky enough to know him will have similar stories to tell. Our lives are richer for having known him. There's a permanent parking place in my memory for Luke and his machines.

Speed on the straights, mate, easy on the curves. Smooth tarmac and warm rides from here on in.

Mike

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Bite point on clutch?
« on: 14 March 2017, 11:12:07 pm »

The 'biting point' in the fazers' clutch with standard levers, which is within our range of adjustment is limited by the amount of free play in the lever. I.E. no play, instant bite. More play, a later bite & closer to the bars
In the case of the OP if he loosens the cable the bite will be closer to the bars & hence a later bite.
Adjustable levers will not alter the cable travel but because the levers can be set closer to the bars the stretch is less, the bite closer to the bars so most prefer it, including myself.
Whenever I've replaced clutch cables I've always taken out just enough slack at the clutch end to allow a final adjustment (i.e. minor tweaking) at the lever to achieve a little free play.
I am however, interested in learning in this case, how shortening the length of a cable can have a different effect depending upon which end is adjusted.
Yeah, yeah, I most of you know this but sometimes ya gotta say it ;)

« on: 02 February 2017, 08:11:07 pm »
The airbox breather pipe fits onto a small spigot at the back of the airbox in the bottom half just off centre towards the left, Looking at it from the top you probably won't be able to see the spigot but you should be able to see the pipe.

Is this where you mean Ian?

Yes that's it. Fuel hose would be a suitable replacement. The oem part is about £25

« on: 29 December 2016, 09:33:05 pm »

Does anybody know if a 190/55 will fit a Gen 1?

What would be the cost of postage?

Hi

They fit fine on a gen1 as I once ran a set on a euro tour without issue.

Postage will be less than £20. You'll only pay what it costs me. Pm if interested.

Thanks

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: R6 throttle mod
« on: 24 December 2016, 08:04:48 pm »
By all means replace it with an R6 tube but don't expect any increase in throttle response. It'll spin up no faster as the limiting factor is the design of the engine. The R6 spins up very fast with it's light crank, the FZS & FZ1 will not.

70 - 80* whilst on the move & creeping upto 102* at a standstill before the fans kick in is perfectly normal.

Congrats Dazza, you'll love it.
I posted this last December in relation to the gen2, & even more relative to the gen1. Maybe now you can understand my thinking.  ;)

You can trick the FZ1 as much as you like. It'll still not be as fast, handle as well, or have traction control, slipper clutch, etc., etc.,. The MT10, like the rest of the top nakeds, is leap years ahead. The FZ1 is a 10 yearold design & looks it. If I didn't have an s1r I'd be on this like a shot. It'll be a hoot to ride.

Ignore the 95 miles to a tank rubbish, my S1r for example is 150 ish & you should be similar.

No need to stress.
Nor is there any need to connect the cables from the servo to the exup valve.
The reason being the exup valve in default mode is in the open position.
It'll pass the MOT because the exhaust is oem & BS approved & not because the valve is operating or not.

General / Re: Europe touring suggestions? Santander to...
« on: 26 April 2016, 12:19:11 pm »
I'd take note of the very good advice given above.
I've done over 30,000 miles on bikes touring Europe & distances travelled between destinations can be critical to the overall enjoyment of the trip.
We now aim for 200 - 250 mile days which affords us the time to choose good biking roads, scenery, coffee stops & lunch. Afterall, it's got to be enjoyable otherwise why bother?
For example, you expecting to go from Santander, which from memory the ferry doesn't arrive until lunchtime, to Barcelona (460 miles) by evening is unrealistic & you'll miss out on some of the finest biking roads anywhere in Europe. As TM says add in a couple of overnight stops, take in some great roads in and around the Pyrenees & you'll not regret it. We're going this year again & have some great routes mapped out. The area really is that good it shouldn't be rushed through.
You thinking 250 miles is a half days riding & 500 miles is a full day is so not true on good biking roads. Autoroutes yes, but what a waste of a trip.

Guy's skill & nerve to ride at that speed, in that environment, with such stresses on his mind & body, is to be applauded. The bloke's a nutter in the nicest sense of the word.

However, the programme came across as amateurish & disjointed. I thought at one point it was a spoof it was so cringeworthy.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Best value End can for Gen2
« on: 30 March 2016, 11:39:10 am »
Performance wise there's little to choose between any aftermarket can.
The main factors to consider are looks & cost so pick the one that you like the look of that falls within your budget.
The stock can is hideous & very heavy so replacing it with any aftermarket can is a good move.

Hi
It's useful for those willing to help you that you give all the relevant history.
You posted the following last year:

For the cost of a new battery it's not worth all the hassle that a faulty one can cause.
Having said that it sounds like the ignition switch and/or immobiliser could be at fault as well. Maybe the low voltage is affecting the immobiliser.

Come on man, are you serious? Ifso, best check the fuel tank as well to see if the petrol does the same. :rolleyes
If the fuel in the tank is level when on the centrestand, check that when it's leaned over onto the sidestand that it stays level but that more liquid is on the lowest side of the tank.
If not, report it to the Royal Society as the laws of physics are outdated. :lol

https://www.bussgeldkatalog.org/german-driving-laws/#revocation_of_a_foreign_drivingpermit

Even if someone is in Germany for just a short time – as a tourist for example – and is punished with a driving ban, the traffic offender cannot unmake it by leaving Germany without complying with the penalty, because the offender can be charged with driving without a licence upon re-entry into Germany, if the person is driving a car. This is a criminal offence by German law which is punished with a fine or even a prison sentence of up to one year.

I read that as meaing that you have to serve the ban in Germany :o

« on: 03 January 2016, 03:16:46 pm »

For no more than a little cleaning (I suggest steam!), polishing, and a new rear tyre soon, you can have a great FZS600 to get yourself started in the fazer world!

You are wanting top dollar but can't even be bothered to clean & polish it. Wow!

Clean & polish it. Change that hideous car silencer for an as you say a " cheap as chips" oem. Replace that rear tyre with one with a decent amount of life left in it & you may attract a buyer. As it is you have little hope as there are plenty of well looked after examples at & around that price.

I'd dispute it's inability to handle tight, twisty roads mr noggy.
I did 2 trips to the Pyrenees on my gen1 & it was excellent.
I've also ridden the Alps, Dolomites, Stelvio etc, on my gen2 & it always handled well enough.
It's upright seating position & wide bars coupled with an input of countersteering actually gives it the edge over sports tackle on those type of roads.

Glad I could help & you got it sorted. Don't bother with a new unit unless it's leaking wax, just keep the existing one well lubed.
As Slappy says, 1000 is too low for tickover, aim for 1250 - 1350, it'll also aid starting.

My real point for those who can't read between the lines was that he's proud as punch of his new bike & some can't resist a dig  :)
