Thanks PieEater. I’ll give that a go. I’ve got some Wurth Dry Chain Lube.
Not sure if chain lube would be the right thing, this is more like what I was thinking of - www.amazon.co.uk/WD-40-Specialist-PTFE-Lubricant-Spray/dp/B00KPUBO5A/

When my lock starts playing up I spray a load of dry lube into the barrel through the attached straw, the liquid cleans out any crud and then evaporates leaving the dry lube in place which makes turning the ignition on much better. I wouldn't use a 'wet' lubricant because this can allow crud to stick to it and cause issues over time.

Are you sure you've correctly capped off the airbox stub and carb rubber stub !?! (Credit to Pat's Motorcycle Page for Photos).

If you spend most of the time on the bike under 6000rpm then an advancer would probably be worthwhile, it should make the bike easier to start and give it more tractability at lower revs. I have one fitted and wouldn't go back, I like the extra pull at low revs with a pillion and the ability to comfortably stay in 6th through 30mph zones, but others have tried one and preferred the OEM timing.

I would put money on the fact that any useful info in the article was derived from our FAQs :)

For those that get the mag, if there's anything useful in it that needs to be added to the Gen1 FAQ let me know.

Also the bike has a sidestand switch which will cut the engine out if you engage gear with the sidestand down, so if you are starting the bike on the sidestand leaving it long enough for the fan to kick in and then engaging gear with the stand down the fan will stop because you've engaged gear and the engine will stop also as you've engaged gear.

Fan behaviour is normal as detailed in the FAQ - "The radiator fan on the Gen1 will switch on once the engine has been started and the bike left in neutral for a short time, the fan will turn off once the bike is put in gear. This is by design, Yamaha have said it is to prevent the fans blades from warping due to heat from the header pipes."

If the engine is cutting out around the same time you'd probably be looking at fuelling, what are you doing with the choke during start-up / idle? I would also check the FAQ regarding carb issues.

Thanks to unfazed for the sizes of replacement Viton type.
Can't see the sizes mentioned on this thread, can you let me know what they are, maybe where you got them from, and any useful hints / tips for replacing them so I can add this info to the GEN1 FAQ please.

Yeah standard here, I found a OEM C&S set on Ebay when I needed to replace mine. I've never felt the need to play around with sprocket sizes, the standard setup works well for my needs. Pat has played around with sprocket sizes to make the bike more responsive at the speeds he rides and has some good info on his site for 15 tooth front and 47 tooth rear - https://www.cartestsoftware.com/fz1/.

There is some good info in the Gen1 FAQ Sticky at the top of this forum, Pats site (linked to near the end) has a lot of service item guides including carb removal / refitting. There's a lot of knowledge and experience on these forums too. If you need anything specific from the Haynes Manual drop me a PM and my camera might accidently go off whilst looking at the relevant section  :photo

Thanks PieEater, the forum post you linked is extremely helpful. I'll probably refer back to this a fair bit as I go through the bike.

Regarding manuals, there doesn't appear to be a haynes manual available in the downloads page. Am I missing something or is it not available?

Cheers
No there isn't a Haynes manual (copyright issues) just the Yamaha workshop manuals which should give you what you need, is there something specific from the Haynes manual you need?

Holeshot or Ivan's? Both use different methods for the exhaust ports and my Holeshot kit didn't come with any caps for the airbox or intake boot. Holeshot you need to use extreme high temperature silicone to seal the caps, I bought a genuine Yamaha cap and clip for the carb and had to find a cap for the airbox but made sure this was airtight. If you can provide some more information about exactly what you used it would be easier to help you but I'd suggest you've not properly sealed the system.

You'll only see this if motors been out for a refurb & repaint like mine.
Either all Silver or all Black motors from factory.
That looks really smart  :thumbup

Exactly what did you use to blank off and seal the exhaust port stubs, airbox and carb intake boot?

I have been looking at a few FZS1000 online and not sure if this is normal or not. Some of the ones with black engine cases appear to have silver or grey cylinders. Is this right or should i be wary?
I don't ever recall seeing this, I know some of the 600's had black casings with silver rocker box cover and fins, but the 1000s were either fully silver or black. Can you share a link?

started to look at more sensible options to the Fazer 1000. I've now got a KTM 890 Duke R with "Track Pack"
Sensible & KTM not two words you often hear together especially with "Track Pack" thrown in  :D  sounds like a lot of fun  :useless

But an MT10 has very little weather protection, has loads of electronic gizmos and it drinks fuel like it's free!  :evil

Really sorry to hear about your loss having had bikes stolen in the past I know crappy it is. I've recently been pondering what I would replace my Gen1 Fazer with, like you I'm not a fan of needless electronics but I've reached the conclusion that it's going to become increasingly impossible to find bikes without rider aids as people starting out with them won't be able to develop the skills needed to ride without them, and those wanting to win the willy waving competitions down the pub would not be able to ride their 200HP bikes on the road without them as that level of power is just insane for road use. I can see why you say the T9 seems like a backwards step in terms of CCs and HP figures but the latest version with the CP3 engine seems to win everyone over for pretty much every aspect including performance and handling I wouldn't necessarily discount it without a test ride. You don't say why the Kawasaki & Suzuki offerings are a backwards step so it would be hard to recommend anything without having the same issues if we don't know what they are also your budget would help narrow down the field.

Myself, although I'd love a KTM Youtube seems full of issues with them including poor treatment by KTM UK, and TBH I'm wary of anything not Japanese in terms of reliability and overall cost of ownership. Untill anything new hits the scene I've pretty much settled on a Versys 1000 should I need to replace my Fazer, mostly as it's big enough not to make me look stupid sat on it (6'3" 20+ stone) and the top notch pillion provision will help win the Mrs over. Sure it's down on peak power but it's not always about the headline figures especially on the road.
