Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Fork Service
« on: 08 March 2017, 09:57:06 pm »

Hi Tefer,
you have not said what bike it is that needs the forks upgrading,I note that you have a Thousand and a 600 which bike are you doing?
The exploded view of the forks that you show are certainly not the FZS 600 forks, so I guess the assumption is they are the Thousand forks.

And it is posted in the Fazer1000/FZ1 section.  ;)

You only knew that because you are in control of all your faculties, and I am an old demented twat.  :rolleyes :eek

My dust seals have become pretty corroded and split on the forks so i am looking to do a fork service, I want to be sure to get all the parts to do a complete service. As the bike is fairly new to me and i cannot tell when fork oil and seals were changed i am going to do them for peace of mind. Do i need every thing in green in the picture?

I am also going to look at Hyperpro springs. I have seen the threads saying progressive is better all round and then others saying linear is better as its suited to weight but i think the Hyperpro kit will be best for me as i am not exactly Valentino Rossi. I will also have luggage and pillion an times so feel progressive will be best.

Glad I sold the Fazer , shouldn't get into too much trouble on the Guzzi , might have to get myself a Harley .

If you go the Harley route my mate has a plough and a muck spreader you can have for the back. :eek

The top ones I have done are a Nitron R1 Mono-Shock on the ass end.
And with a lot of encouragement from Kebab, and, also reading his posts on the subject, I did the front fork conversion, converting from 'Damper Rod' suspension to 'Cartridge Emulator' (YSS Emulators) suspension and fitting Ohlins Linear Spring matched to my rider weight.

I deviated a little from Kebab's posts when it came to overcoming the damping effects of the Damper Rods, because the rods on the 2002-2003 FXS600 are shorter that the earlier Boxeye.

A very, very worthwhile upgrade. I could have done it for less money by going the second-hand R6 shocker route, but I didn't.

Spend in total start to finish about £650, maybe a tenner more, maybe a tenner less

I know that it is dead money and that I will never recoup the cost, should I ever sell it on, but the bike handles so, so much better, it steers into bends better, holds it's line better without any diving in on undulating surfaces.
I have so much more feel through the bars I feel now have contact with road surfaces, and, the ride comfort is much improved.

Would I do it over again knowing what I do now? YES I certainly would.

It is not a difficult thing to do but it takes time and you need to work methodically and accurately when drilling out the Damper Rods to overcome their effect.

The thing is I guess I am less likely to lose the bike cornering now, but with saying that I am cornering faster, I feel more confident and my chicken strips have diminished 50% in the last 5 rides.  :eek

but also we now have octogenarian drivers on the roads who are incapable of reacting as quick as a 20 something stoner but the rest of us suffer

Oyyy! BB careful mate we are all getting closer.

One of my Wife's Uncles (That's one of her Uncles not one of my Wives) is 90 in August and has just bought a new car, and, he said this one is likely to be the last new car he owns.
He lives in the Northern Lakes and to be honest he is absolutely fine behind the wheel. Mmmaybe drives a bit to fast, but he is in control of the motor and still enjoys his car.
so good luck to him.

I have seen twats on the road in their 30's & 40's more of a liability than Unk.
Keep driving Unk we love you man :thumbup  X

IMHO your getting away with it coz its cold gra, personally I run 36 42, always have done, or 30 36 on a track day, but that's a general year round thing, if yours are that high they may well be fine because they ain't getting that hot this time of year, but then again what the hell do I know I'm just a brickie, the fellers who done your suspendies are the experts  :)

Hey Ogri, not just a brickie. you mean your proud to be a brickie.
Started my apprenticeship in 1962, worked for that company until I was 21years old and went Self Employed what was then called 'The Lump' worked most of my working life on the sites chasing the £ and loved every minute of it.
The crack is good the piss taking never ending and for the best part the days flew by.
I worked with a small team of guys in the end building one off bespoke houses and extensions and hard landscaping, the guys who ran the team was a mate I had worked with years and years before we called him 'Wildplum' if you saw one of the corners he built you would know why, but he was the best organiser I have ever met and if there was a problem he worked out a way to get around it, even to the point one time he advised a firm of London Architects how to construct a home with a swimming pool half in and half out of the house using cantilevers.
But as I said we tried to keep him off the tools, at one point we had some iron fighters on site and we got one of them to weld his trowel to a 12 foot steel scaffold tube that stopped his game.
Brickies are important people in society we build the most expensive thing that anyone will ever purchase in the entire lives, and then they trust us to come back and build extensions on them.
Hold you head high Ogri your a HOME BUILDER.

Now! Muck and Bullets or Pug Up, and don't forget the f------g wall ties. :eek Rodney F-----g Roughhouse.

Makes me laugh looking at that old Beezer now, the old Amal carb with the remote float bowl hanging out the side. always dripped fuel no mater how many red fibre washers you put on it even leaked with a smudge of Red Hermatite between each washer.
Ah they were the days of Vibration through your body and oil up the legs of your jeans  :lol and did not even have to wear a skid lid. lol! how f-----g dangerous

And all with a compression ratio of 5 to 1.
:rolleyes FFS

The other thing I recall that used cause a uproar was sit on the combo start it up pull the coke lever round just a tad to raise the revs just above a thump or two, tread it into gear and get it to move off at about 2 or 3 miles per hour and get off it. :eek

But with saying that Red I had an old BSA M20 (1958) that was side valve I bought it after I passed my test in 1966 and it had a Monza sidecar on it, I rode it about 20 miles to my home I have never been so scared in my life, I just could not get it to go around corners.
Billy W one of my mate has a big Kwacker (900) with a single adult chair on it, I go in the chair on some coast runs in the better weather and he knows what he is doing, the guys that are on solos don't get to the coast many minutes before we do, 102 was fastest we have had out of the Kwacker combo two up Billy on bike me in the chair. :eek
What Billy lacks in top speed he make up for with skill and balls.

The picture was not my M20 but exactly the same, colour and year, mine was a bit tattier that this one, but, it wasn't a rough old dog I bought it off an old boy (Who was probably 10 years younger than I am now LOL) and he had it from new and had it serviced regularly and generally it was loved by him I think. If I had it now in that condition looking at about 5 grand or more

Another one for valve clearences   :thumbup ....re-grinding the valves would help your compression figures aswell....

had my X7 rebored a couple of yeasr ago...£50 per cylinder + new oversized pistons and rings , dont think thats your problem though  .....

tommy , showing your age there buddy   :lol   ..those old bikes would have been "overhead valve" engines , valves operated by a push rod from the cam located close to the crank , these new fangled motor cycles have the cam on the top and driven by a chain...called "overhead cam" engines.....still important to check valve clearences on the fazers after head removal....

I think I might have known that Red LOL
I still have a set of four 1959 BSA Super Rocket push rods in my shed, don't ask why but it just seemed wrong to bin them. he eh

Lol ok , you got me bang to rights..getting decent bike gear sucks when your tiny...this was xxs...
