I have the Yamaha Touring screen on my FZ1S Fazer and it works fine for me at 5'9". Keeps the wind/wet off my hands too which is great in Spring/Autumn.
Could be a bit taller though as I have to duck my head to clear the visor but I would not change it for another model

Easy job (as long as you do not have to bleed them  ;) ).
I have used all  types of pads over the years but in all my Fazers I have stuck to the Yamaha ones. Each to their own though

« on: 11 April 2012, 07:31:12 pm »
Assuming you mean your old FZS600 (pre-2003 model) had adjustable forks.
The FZ6 (2004 onwards) model has different forks on them (43mm diameter as opposed to the 41mm on the older FZS model).
As far as I am aware these are no interchangable.

« on: 11 April 2012, 07:22:34 pm »
Question I would have is what make of Heated grips are you fitting?
If Oxford one's then it is recommended (by Oxford and some Yam Dealers) to fit directly to the  battery otherwise they won't work correctly.
As far as what wire is correct i usually use a circuit tester of some description to check as I always stuff up electrics  ;)

I'm a Geordie and the UK should be renamed Geordieland IMO  ;)
I have lived in Scotland for past 25 years and, although born and raised in the North East, I consider myself Scottish. The British identity does not even come into the equation for me.

I was going to ask the same thing about any feedback on the PR3's.
I have BT021's on my Gen2 and they have been "ok", although noisy. Loads of tread left on them but now on 2nd puncture to the rear and have a puncture on the front aswell...bugger.
I tried the PR1's on my old FZS600 and I have to say I did not like them. Took me ages to scrub in and did not feel secure on the front.
I was looking at BT023, Roadsmarts/2 or PR3s as my next tyre for the Gen2. Normally a big Bridgstone fan but the 021's have put me off a bit  :\

General / Re: What should I buy?
« on: 10 March 2012, 04:47:40 pm »
Hated the CBF1000 when I last test rode one. Won't buy another Honda.
Love the Speed and Street triples but no wind protection and as I am "maturing" I can't do naked (in more ways than one).
Had a thought that the Tiger would be ideal. Not bothered about screen noise/buffing as I get that on any bike its more the ride/handling. I really like both my FZ1 and FZ6 and ideally I will keep the FZ1. The FZ6 is "almost" the perfect bike but it does not inspire me to ride it and I have never liked smaller engined revvy bikes (the FZS600 was the same for me aswell).

« on: 06 March 2012, 10:11:59 pm »
I have had this same issue on all the bikes I have fitted the Oxford grips to. Blue flashing light followed byt the grips turning off (at traffic lights) is the most common.
Spoke to Oxford who advised the grips should be wired directly to the battery for "optimum" performance otherwise they "may" show the above characteristic. My local dealer refuses to fit Oxford grips on an ignition live and will only fit directly to the battery.

« on: 06 March 2012, 10:05:28 pm »
Looking to replace either my Gen 2 or FZ6 (just for a change) but struggling to think of what to get as I have done most bikes.
I have wanted to buy a Triumph for years but have never bothered as my local dealer is sh*te, but have thought why let that put me off. Been thinking about getting the road version of the Triumph Tiger 800.
Never had an "adventure" style bike so don't know wht to expect. Anyone any experience with them? What they like (positive/negative comments appreciated)

Agree with the above comments, most providers "recommend" replacing the SIM every 2 years. I know this is Vodaphone's standard response to connection issues of this type

Heat, WD40, Molegrips, impact driver.........although not neccessarily in that order  ;)
Fazeriders suggestions are however more concise and ultimately may be the best options. If in doubt and you have failed miserably, take the wheel to your local dealer or even someone like Kwik Fit (I have done this in the past for a similar issue)

Valves should be checked every 24,000 miles on the FZ6  ;)
If yours has done 26k then its due.

« on: 30 January 2012, 10:21:45 pm »
Never bothered with the headlight mod myself as the one headlight puts out a more than decent beam. Not quite as good as my Gen 2 or MkII FZS600 but its more than decent.
Only thing that annoys me is I keep getting flashed and gestured at (by cars and bikes) advising me that I have a headlight out..........I fecking know!!!!  :)

FZ6 / Fazer / Re: buying an 04 600

The FZ6 does not come with caps over the swing arm pivot bolts and Yamaha did/does offer factory fit Meta alarms to their bikes. My last 3 Thous and my current FZ6 came with them (although I had them removed).
ALL fuel injected bikes come with fueling issues to some degree (IMO of course). Never ridden one that is perfect yet. The earlier models of all bikes tend to be worse though as this is the manufactorers first foray into the technology (e.g FZ1  ;) , and the earlier FZ6 both have this "feature")
I have an '09 FZ6 and so far its been a great bike. Just look at Nooj's 100k model.
Must say that £3k is a bit steep in my opinion. Personally I would say £2300-£2500 would be more realistic. To put this price into perspective, I will be selling my '09 for approx £3200 and that has 5k miles.

I did come from a Gen 1 and did wonder what they did to the engine....ruined it....but thats progress for you  :)
Lets be honest though, most of the Jap manufactorers have gone down the "high reving" route from an engine perspective (taking the twins out of the equation of course). This is of course a cost saving exercise and ultimately nothing to do with what we, as consumers want. Gone are the days of both bike and car manufacturers actually listening to what their customers want.

Over the years I have tried and failed miserably many times to bleed the brakes. I now don't bother and take it to my local dealer and pay 1/2 labour for them to do it.....lazy I know but at least its done right with the correct equipment

I agree with your comments Pitternator but my issue is I'm not into modding bikes for performance. I use my bikes as "tools" so any mods I make are generally for practical reasons (screens, racks, air fresheners etc).
Riding my last stock Gen 1 back to back with my stock Gen2, the Gen 1 felt "old" even with the low unabused miles it had on it. Technology/mechanics have changed and moved on since the Gen 1 (IMO  :) ) and that is not dissing the Gen 1 in any way. Track day riding or serious road riding are another matter and being honest there are not many "sorted" bikes out there that you would not have to modify in some way (unless you buy an italian plastic rocket)
Yes you are right, chuck some money at the Gen 1, upgrade the suspension and Ivanise the beastie and you will have a lovely machine that will be a "classic" in years to come....but you really do need to do these things. Gen 2's issue (apart from the bloody awful seat) is power delivery. My Gen 2 could do with a PC3 but I personally just ride around the issue. If I did not find it so temperemental on cold/wet roads I would ride it all year round. Builds character though  ;)
One thing is however correct....the build quality (and looks) on the Gen 2 is excellent. Puts Honda completely to shame.
Quality of the Gen 1 is excellent aswell and I rode all 3 of mine through winters without any issues.

General / Re: Off topic - Bluetooth question for phones in cars
« on: 09 January 2012, 06:58:47 pm »
Problem with Bluetooth is that some manufactorers only like certain devices and then they have to have the correct Operating System. Check on Vaxhaull website or with dealer to see if your phone is compatible. It may not be due to age/operating system etc

FZ6 / Fazer / Re: Tyres
« on: 09 January 2012, 06:37:36 pm »
Again I would emphasise that tyre recommendation is pure opinion.
Slaninar is correct that tyres don't neccessarily need to be the same type but all tyre manufactorers (and some insurance companies) advise not to mix brands.
Why........the profile and compound differs between different brands. While on actual geometry is not an issue (like on a car where tyres should be the same type on an axle) footprint and behaviour is a factor. I know that when I fitted Avon tyres the steering slowed considerable on the bike whereas I find with Michelin's the turn in is faster.
Would I want a different brand front/rear....not for me but each to their own  ;)

I've had 3 Gen1's and have owned my current Gen2 for 2 1/2 years. As everyone has commented the Gen2 is completely different bike....not "better" just different (just like the FZS600 and FZ6 IMO).
Would I go back to a Gen 1......No.
I think my Gen 2, for what I use it for, is a better package. It is not as much an all rounder as the Gen 1 is/was but I find it comfortable (once you change the seat and screen) and I like the engine. Not as much low down power as the Gen 1 but you learn to ride around that issue.
As far as fuelling goes I have an '06 model and I do notice the bad fuelling but I have adapted my riding to get around this rather than fitting an FCE. I would expect to adapt my riding to any change of bike based on handling/power delivery etc anyway so this is no different.

As Nooj as just pointed out are you sitting straight on the bike. My mate had the same issue with his Blade and after I followed him for a while he was sitting off centre. The cause was him sitting squint and unconsiously putting pressure on one of the handlebars to compensate.
