Fazer sometimes not starting, just single click
« on: 09 September 2016, 04:33:41 pm »
Hi,

Sometimes I get nothing when trying to start my fazer, just a single solid click. I can bump start it to get it going, or if I leave it for a while and come back it will just start fine.

It will happen even if I just stop for 5 mins with the ignition off.

Here's a video, https://vid.me/tIGQ

I left the battery connected to a charger for a few days, but still have the problem. I don't think its the battery as it turns over fine when it does work. I wonder if it something to do with clicking noise that slowly dies, that I sometimes here when I turn the ignition on after its been off for a while, sounds like it might be the fuel pump. I also had to bypass the datatool veto evo (under direction from datatool) when I first got it as that packed up straight away.

Could it be your starter solenoid malfunctioning? Others more knowledgeable will no doubt identify fault shortly.

Could be stuck starter motor brushes.

Replaced the solenoid but no dice. Also tried to jump it from a car, but the same thing so don't think it is the battery unless I wasn't getting a good connection.

Dodgy side stand switch.
Try starting it with the side stand in the up position, or if you need to let it tickover for a bit put it on the centre stand.

If a jump start isn't working but you get a click, it is either the starter solenoid or the starter motor.

Check if you are getting 12v at the starter motor when you press starter button.  If you are then it's probably stuck brush in starter motor.  Not a big job to take it out and clean it out to free brushes.

Agreed, it's most likely to be the starter motor... a bit of glazing or corrosion on some of the commutator contacts will mean the starter motor is open circuit when it stops in certain positions.
Other possibilities are loose connections, don't forget the negative connection to the engine has to be good too.

Try starter motor on a battery direct when removed you'll see if it works
Stuff everything I've always got my bike :)

Did you buy a new or secondhand solenoid?
Did you short the large connections on the solenoid to see if the motor turns?

Forgot to add that one a good test but could be iffy wiring or corroded contacts at switch on low tension circuit

Yep I bought a new solenoid. No spark when shorting the contacts on it. Battery is over 12.5v so assume it's still good.

Will have a look at the starter motor.

Before you put your hand in your pocket check all the electrical connections, we are talking 12 volts here it takes very little stopping, battery live and Neural/Earth, check the connection down to earth on engine just behind the oil filler cap, also the wire connections at the solenoid. and as a couple of guys have pointed out it's worth linking the two big connections on the solenoid with something heavy (A spanner) to see if the starter motor spins over.

starter motors are pretty simple things to rebuild (apart from the bushes on some motors) can be worth taking the motor out and diret connect to a battery using jump leads - then remove the cover off the motor and give it a blast with air (if you can) and a spray with contact cleaner
if it still doesnt work and you are going to buy a replacement then give dismantling and rebuilding the old motor a go while waiting for replacement
its always a good thing to know for the future (check the bearings while your in there)

im not worth trusting yet - i only bought my damaged fazer yesterday but its nearly a streetfighter already lol
