FZS600 front fork length
« on: 12 May 2012, 11:53:24 am »
Can anyone confirm the front fork length, from top of leg down to centre of spindle hole on lower stanchion (with no weight on forks) ?

Toying with future front-end mod  ;)

Give or take a couple of millimetres, 755 mm.

Hmmm....
Well, although it's been mentioned briefly on the old site before, I thought the following would do the job.

YZF600 thundercat forks - they are also 41mm, but 40-50mm longer than the FZS600 ones. To compensate, fit
VFR750 clip ons or similar as they are more 'raised' than the usual sets, and so might not foul the tank. A customisable set of clip-ons would definately clear the tank, but of course would cost £££££££

I'm thinking - take off the standard bar risers. The clip-ons would clamp on to the excess fork length and still give a near standard ride height.
The mudguard would probably require a bit of messing around with some spacers.
Bikes weight the same, so heavier springs not needed.
The only real concern would possibly be the extra fork travel of the YZF forks - but not sure how much travel they have.

So you would then have preload, compression and rebound for the front-end.

Of course, this would all be theoretical, and is likely to stay that way since I no longer have the 600.....however, someone else may think it's do-able & take up the challenge?

That's an interesting idea.
Mine are in need of an overhaul and I wondered about your gold valve mod, but didn't fancy weakening the damper tube.
YZF fork travel looks to be the standard 5.1".
Can't see any on eBay at the moment though.

Ah yes, the gold valve mod....worked great, I believe DavePH still runs them.

As you can see, I'm still a serial front-end modifier, but currently for the 1000  :-)

Thundercat forks do come up occasionally on ebay, but I guess they'll be getting rarer as supplies 'dry up'.

Sorry to say that the Thundercat forks is NOT a straight swap, but if you use the tcat yoke it will be ok.

I used the fazer wheel, had to make 2 smal spacers for the wheelbolt,i just fitted the wheel with brakes on and messured the sice of spacers, the speedo fits ok. you need to change the stem bearings as well.
then you need some clipons, i used the tcat clipons.

enyway.. the old Fork tread : http://fazerowners.yuku.com/topic/5921/Forks?page=4#.T-maZfUfFqw

some old pictures from my build.

Perhaps not such simple a swap then.....although in truth, not that bad to get a much improved front-end

if you have a complete Fork/yoke/clipons/fender-kit as i did its done in a few hours  ;) , of with the fazerparts, change 2 bearings in the frame, mount the tcatparts, space the frontwheel. Done.
