FZS600 Fazer / Re: Damper Rod Bolt Advice
« on: 15 September 2014, 11:18:27 pm »
Yep, same here, used a piece of thick dowling i had lying around, shaved it enough to fit in the rod, gave it a sharp tap and unscrewed the bottom bolt, no problem.
Used it again to re-fit the rod.

Interesting thread, i've had similar problems with a high frequency vibe through the tank and fairing, although it dissapears after 65 -70 mph or so.
I also get a slight buzz through the footrests as well, so might try the tank bolt jobbie and see if that cures it.

Sorry for the late reply tweety, to be honest mate, they came off dead easy.....but probably because the cylinder head had been off not long before, to have some work done on it, so they had been copper greased by the guy who did the work.
If i had done them before it went in, i would probably have sprayed them a few times with WD, just to allow for penetration before getting the socket on them.

When i had the cylinder head refurbished last year, the dyno guy did ask if i wanted the chain replacing while the head was off.
He did state that if it was replaced, from his experience it wouldn't be long before it would be making similar noises again.
He said quite a few multi cylinder and twins tend to be noisy in that area, the fairing on the Fazer seems to amplify the rattle, so it can sound worse than it really is.
He didn't feel it warranted replacing, so i didn't.

My collector box had rusted through a touch, only about the size of a 5p, so i removed the pipes and had a mate weld a small plate over the hole, then dressed it up a bit and cleaned the pipes with a wire brush and a final rub-down with fine emery paper.
Bought a can of High temp paint from B&Q, the stuff used for stoves and used all the can on the pipes, the can was good for three decent coats.
Still looking good after six months use, although i do also have a fender defender jobbie on the front mudguard, so that keeps a lot of crap off the pipes.

Interesting subject, i've been reading it from the beginning and i had an inkling half way through that it was probably the push-rod adjustment.
I've replaced the clutch on several bikes over the years, British, Jap and Italian and i always start off adjusting from the clutch mechanism-up, the clutch lever/cable adjustment being the final one.
Glad you got it sorted.

I'll probably go for the fuse tap option, thanks for that Buzz.
Now, regarding the loose left-hand grip, seeing as i didn't originally fit the heated grips, can anyone tell me how they are secured to the bars please?
I'm assuming that when they were left on, the heat may have caused the "glue?" to melt and thus detached the grip from the bars?

With the motad ones isnt there somthing about having to sleave them down for some kind of somthing or other

Yeah, i think i remember reading something like that on here a while back.
Nonetheless, the system from Sandyspares seems like a decent deal, at £171 i think i might seriously consider them.

The conflict between the charging and ignition systems was showing up on the Dyno's oscilloscope as two "tracer" lines, when there should have been only one, for the ignition system test.
That, apparently is how he sussed out that there was a conflict.
The reg/rec unit was around £50 brand new on ebay and that instantly sorted the problem, although as i mentioned, the damage to the battery cell had already been caused by this problem.

FZS600 Fazer / Hole in one...exhaust!
« on: 23 January 2014, 08:22:23 pm »
Went for a spin on the bike today to visit a mate, he re-builds wheels for vintage machines, etc.
When i was leaving, he came out to bid me toodle-pip and noticed that the exhaust was leaking, right on the collector box, as they do...apparently.
So, a replacement stainless one is the answer i recon.
I'm sure quite a few of you Foccers have been down this road (sic), so any suggestions on what you feel is the better replacement system?
Also thinking of replacing the manifold nuts with brass ones, as i did on the Ducati Monster when i replaced the system on that, might as well whilst it's off, doncha think?

Well, i might as well throw my tuppence into the ring.
My bike had a similar problem when it was at the dyno man's, turned out that the charging system was conflicting with the ignition system, replaced the reg/rec unit and all was well, although the problem did cause one of the cells on the battery to bulge slightly.

yeah, mines is an 02 with the slanty headlights. 02 was the changeover year so im led to believe that both boxeyes/foxeyes were available for a time, and that there was some overlap as opposed to a clear cut stopping of one, and starting of the other.

hope that makes sense :lol

Right Mick, cheers for that mate, did cross my mind that mine was possibly a changeover model.

Slightly off topic Darrsi, interesting point about your bike breaking away slightly at the rear!
When i bought mine last year, it handled like it was on rails, even though it had been stood for a good 12 months, it had part worn Bridgestones on when i got it.
After i had the top-end re-done last September, i fitted new Bridgestones but by the the bad weather was starting to set in, so i didn't use it very often.
On the odd times i have been out on it, it has occasionally stepped out on the rear, so might be a good idea to check the rear shock i think.
Nice one.

Bit confused Darrsi.
You state: Mk2 is a foxeye 02/03.
Mine is a 2002 but has the rectangular headlights, which i assume is a Mk1 boxeye?
Are the foxeye headlights the slanted ones?
In any case, would it mean that mine is a possible Mk 1/2?

FZS600 Fazer / Heated grip woes....and associated problems.
« on: 22 January 2014, 12:11:13 am »
When i bought the bike last year, it already had the heated grips fitted, haven't a clue what make they are but they have proved to be very handy the last few times i've been out on the bike in cold weather this winter.
But i digress... Last Sunday, i went for a spin to visit a couple of friends on Anglesey, some 20-odd miles away from where i live.
I used the heated grips on the way, got to matey's and stayed for a cuppa and a chat, as you do.
An hour later i came out to a flat battery, i had left the damn grips turned on, anyway it started easily enough with a bump start and off i went, so visit matey two, called at the petrol station about four miles away and the bike started on the button afterwards.
I noticed on the way to matey two's, that the left grip was loose, turning as freely as the twistgrip, so i assume that the heat build-up when they were left on for the hour i was visiting, had melted the glue that holds it to the bars?
Power for the grips come directly from the battery, so obviously they can be accidentally left on, as i did.
So, is there anywhere i can source a switchable power supply, such as the ignition circuit, so that this problem doesn't happen again?

When i got home, i took the battery off to charge it, i do have an optimate but the bike is outside under a cover, so it isn't convenient to charge it while it's on the bike, sod trailing wires out of the front window in this weather!
Anyway, as i said, i took the battery off the bike, which i found to be quite a wind-up, seeing as i couldn't get any grip on the beggar, so i resorted to threading a thin cable tie through each of the battery terminals and lifting it out that way, otherwise i would have had to have been a touch more inventive!
One of the cells has a slight bulge, as was made known to me when it was at the dyno mans last year, due he said, to the failure of the rec\reg unit, so i expect that the bulge didn't help with the removal of it.
Anyone else had a problem removing the battery?

General / Re: Got any other hobbies?
« on: 29 October 2013, 09:37:36 am »
Like a couple on here, my hobby turned into a business.
At 44 years of age and at the end of a fairly long relationship, in 2001, i put in for a grant and set up an Audio/Visual production studio.
Then in 2004, i incorporated a music publishing company and two independent record labels, releasing just over 30 albums.
In 2008, i put the labels on hold and concentrated more on corporate work, which was much less stressful than dealing with the prima donna's in the music industry.
A lot of my work now, involves transferring vinyl to cd and vhs to dvd, plus i've been supplying weekly podcasts to a company in Switzerland for the last five years.

I agree with the powdercoating comments, i had my Ducati Monster frame done in red and the footrest hangers in silver grey and i was very pleased with the results.
Paint tends to chip quite easily, whereas the powdercoating will take a lot more punishment, i had a couple of coats of clear lacquer added as well  and that gave it a bit more protection.
The powdercoating is a lot easier to keep clean as well, just a squirt with WD40 and a wipe down with a cloth and it comes up a treat.

Well, in spite of some pretty miserable weather here in North Wales, i've managed to get out on the bike a few times since i got her back.
She's deffinately smoother on the throttle, goes like stink with none of the hunting or bogging down that was the original problem.
She feels slightly lumpy from tickover and when moving in slow moving traffic, although that is possibly how Kev has set the jetting and air filter, he did set it up to be more economical fuel wise, from 50mph up to 110, seeing as i use it mostly at that range, due to the amazing mountain roads hereabouts.
All in all, i'm happy with her and i suppose the cost was worth the enjoyment i've had on the few runs i've had on her up to now, although i wish it was the beginning of summer, rather than winter but i'm sure next year will be fun.

How do you know your current set is from a '99? Or is that just what Kev said? Be interested to find out :)

It was what Kev mentioned, i'll ask him how he knows this when i next see him.

Dead Eye: I'm not sure if there's any difference in the year of carbs either, i'll try and remember to ask Kev the next time i see him.
I forgot to take my USB key over the other day, so didn't get the pics off his 'puter, will try and get them also, some interesting (scary?) stuff on there.

Dude: Yep, i was indeedy an expensive job but at least i can rest assured that the bike is likely to be at the best it can be, engine wise now.
