You're absolutely right VNA, Global population growing out of control and with the advancements in medicines it is only going to increase more quickly. The big rain forests are the lungs of the world and it seems nothing is being done to control their destruction for timber, palm oil and mining. The oceans are dying through the amount of plastics being pumped and dropped into them and the only reason governments are doing anything about vehicle emissions is to make the air in the big cities cleaner and hit targets set by faceless bureaucrats. I think that by 2040 the world is going to be a totally different place and electric cars are going to be the least of our problems :'(

I'm wondering where all the lithium etc. is going to come from to produce the 10s of 1000s of batteries they're going to need to power all these electric vehicles. Is there new technology coming through. It's interesting to note that neither Japan nor Germany are making the same commitment yet and in any case, when was the last time any Government actually met a deadline on any of their commitments?

Jesus, if you believe in hell there must be standing room only, every day you see/read/hear stories like this. Cnuts praying on the elderly, infirm & vulnerable, but its hardly surprising considering the punishment rarely fits the crime.
You're dead right Dea-ville, it's crazy that you can get 6 months for 130mph on a quiet dual carriageway but these sub human scumbags, if they can be arsed to track them down and get them into court will probably get 20 hours community service.

« on: 31 July 2017, 09:23:04 pm »

I think as we head into the next generation of 'classic' bikes with fuel injection, ABS, traction control, riding modes and the like, they'll be less home maintenance friendly so less likely to be restored. Up until 2000ish most bikes were relatively straightforward to maintain but they have become increasingly complex and compact since then. I daresay a lot of us on here have stripped bikes down to component parts and restored/rebuilt them, I know I have, more than once but I'm not sure I would try it with a modern one. Having said all that I guess 25 years ago, 50 year old bikers were saying that the new bikes of the time would never be classics.

You can buy them. The price takes some swallowing though, but they're SW Motech so they were never going to be cheap.

I'd be tempted to contact the place you bought them from and ask them if there would be an issue using them. The slightly slacker clearance may be to take up heat expansion. I would guess they're unlikely to seize in use but may wear more quickly.

I wonder if the idea of what's a 'classic' is mainly a generational thing. There are some solid gold classics, because they were ground breaking and special even when new, Brough Superiors, Vincent Black Shadows and the like but they were hand built in limited numbers and will always be valuable. Even bikes like the early bonnevilles and 500 Goldstars that are now fetching £12-15,000+  were churned out by the 1000s and are still relatively plentiful and even humble commuter 350cc Matchless and AJSs are going for £2000+ but who's going to be buying these bikes once the guys who used to ride them in their youth have all fallen off their perches? I love the old British bikes but I wouldn't want to own one. So when the number of people wanting these bikes is fewer than those available, the value is surely going to drop and some owners will get burned. I wonder how many 17 year olds just getting into bikes now are looking at the old Z900s and CB750s as the bikes the want when they can afford them, I suspect not many.

I had a 1988 VFR750FJ and it was probably the best bike I've ever owned, the only thing working against it becoming a classic is it's built quality and longevity. There's still a plentiful supply of tidy ones around, although prices are already increasing.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Fitting new fork springs
« on: 22 July 2017, 06:24:58 pm »
Hi Tommy, I was a bit nervous when I did it, I must admit. I jacked the downpipes 'til the rear wheel was touching the floor and slipped 3 12mm thick plywood boards under the front wheel to stop it tipping to far forward, took the caps off and gradually lowered the jack and it dropped forward with no dramas at all. I ended up buying Hagon springs which to came with 10w oil, I was expecting 15w but that's obviously what they recommend. I was torn between linear and progressives but went with the Hagons in the end. Waiting for the new shock now.

« on: 22 July 2017, 02:07:33 pm »
My new fork springs arrived today. The forks had new oil a few weeks ago so I don't need to change that. I was wondering if it's possible to lower the bike onto the fully compressed forks to measure the air gap while on the centre stand or will it just tip forward too far and roll off the stand? It would be nice if I can avoid having to remove the forks if possible. I have a trolley jack so I can lower it gradually and cable ties for the brake lever if needed.

Had her booked in for some new tyres this morning and wouldn't ya know.... pissing down but not liking to let people down i went for it anyway.
Had the rear spin up on me at 50mph on the way homr which made my rear twitch bit other than that it was smooth sailing. Not planning on scrubbing in new tyres in the rain again though
:eek Back in April '96 I  was picking up my first brand new bike, a 1200 Bandit and it started to snow just as I left the dealer, less than a mile down the road someone in a car pulled out in front of me, brand new tyres, brand new brakes and a brand new bike in the snow, that was a memorable few seconds  :lol

It is when your testicles rest on the indicators your in trouble. Never ridden a bike loaded up like that, does it impair the handling much? My guess is it makes filtering an interesting task.
You're in more trouble when your throwovers rest on your testicles :lol  Never ridden this one fully loaded but previous bikes haven't been too bad once you get used to the way the extra weight affects the steering ,CofG etc. I find it's worse at low speed so filtering for me at least is pretty much off the agenda. I dare say I'll get criticised from certain parties for admitting it but even without all the luggage I tend not to try to squeeze through small gaps. :rolleyes

There's something about a fully loaded bike, or is that just me? Where were you guys going? The problem with camping is that whether you're going for a weekend or a week you still need the same stuff unless you're happy to rough it (I'm not) the only extra stuff you need for a longer trip is clothing and that takes hardly any room at all. Has anyone else had problems with their throwovers resting on the indicators?

Don't forget to take a little tool box where you include a chain lubricant.
Good advice Pandy but I'm only about 50 miles from Mallory so won't need to lube the chain and I have the original toolkit under the seat :thumbup

foccin hell. How long are you away for?

A weekends worth of clothes in the tank bag or tail bag and a tent strapped to the back should be sufficient.
I know what you mean, it does look like a lot for a weekend :rolleyes  Nothing is actually packed yet and I may end up not having to use it all, I just strapped it on to make sure that if I do need it all, it'll fit. I like to be comfortable and do tend to take the kitchen sink though, sleeping bag, roll mat, kettle, stove , chair, lamp, beer etc. etc. it's all bulky stuff and takes up a lot of room. On the plus side even if I do end up taking it all it'll still probably weigh less than my previous bike did naked :lol

Just spent a couple of hours trying to fit everything on the bike ready for next weekends trip to the Mallory Bike Bonanza. I just hope there's room for me on it now
