I'm sure I'd be causing more pollution doing 50 in second gear than 70 in sixth

I’m pretty confident that they don’t advise cruising at 50mph on a motorway in 2nd gear!

Next you’ll be lecturing me on push pull steering and not trail braking into corners. :z

Yeah been on the M25, both in my car and the bike.  Not rushing back.

The A82 and A9 are my regular roads from hell.

Well at least you've learned something then  :)

 IPSGA

"I" is for information.

Think about what is going on around you and check your mirrors to predict the movements of other road users, as well as the road ahead.
I’m cruising at the maximum speed of 50mph on an average speed camera regulated motorway.  I’m in 6th gear.
Quote
Secondly, "P" stands for position.

After confirming it's safe, move your vehicle to make sure you have the best view for dealing with your manoeuvre.
I’m keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front who is also doing 50mph, I’m alert to anybody potentially sitting close on my tail.  I have no manoeuvre to make.  I’m in 6th gear.
Quote
Also remember "S" for speed. Adjust your speed to get you ready for what you are about to do, before reaching the hazard.

I’m cruising at 50 mph in 6th gear on my motorcycle on a motorway.
Quote
Then there is "G" for gears. Once at the correct speed, choose the right gear.
Adjust your speed early so you have time to change gear separately.
Finally, accelerate.
I’ve nothing to accelerate for, I’m cruising at 50mph, the max speed on the motorway.  Oh and if I do need to pick up speed, I just need to twist the throttle and my bike will pump out 80ftlbs of torque quickly rising to almost 110ftlbs of torque in a second or two.

Yep I'm sure they will, but as said you shouldn't. At 50 you are likely to be in traffic. You should be somewhere in the middle of the rev range to give you options. Basic stuff
Well yeah on a motorway there usually is traffic.  And strangely enough I’m pretty much always in 6th  unless there is a traffic jam, then I am in 2nd and filtering.  Not interested in the option of burning more fuel, reducing my range or increasing wear on my engine.
Quote
And of course advanced motorcyclists don't need to google it
All I leaned from googing it was what it stands for.

If you are on a motorway cruising  at 50mph in 2nd gear the only thing you probably have that is advancing is maybe dementia. :pokefun

Both my FZS1000 and R1250R will happily cruise at 50mph in 6th.    At 30mph the FZS is still happy in 6th, but the BMW being a twin wants to be in 3rd.

My diesel Yeti will be happier in 5th at 50mph-the turbo will no longer be producing any boost at this speed in 6th, so the engine would be outside its normal operating range.

I'm sure it would, but you've obviously never heard of IPSGA  :rolleyes
No, but I have heard of google :D
Clearly if you are crusing at a steady 50mph you would want to be in 6th gear and most certainly not 2nd.

Anyway, here’s a thought.  I can see in the not too distance future another potential development.
Say on a three lane motorway.  Lanes 1 and 2 could be limited to say 50mph.  The outer lane would be reserved electric and hydrogen powered vehicles with a limit of 70mph.

Which is only going to have the result of pushing traffic onto A Roads which have 60 limits and no average speed cameras, so people will exceed those limits...!

I can solve that for you.  Put a 40mph speed limit on trunk roads and install average speed cameras. :D
Quote
My FZ6 will easily cruise at 70 mph, trying to keep the speed down to 50 on a long piece of road with barely a turn on it is mind-numbingly tedious and it is so easy for your concentration to drift and suddenly Oops! You're doing over 50, so then you've got to slow to 45 to avoid tripping the cameras.
I just press cruise control and relax.

More scientific 'evidence' that will be proven to be wrong in a few years.
The point of the study was not to prove that fuel would be saved and pollution levels would be reduced, but to try and determine by how much.
Quote
I'm sure I'd be causing more pollution doing 50 in second gear than 70 in sixth  :rolleyes
Perhaps we need more routine driving tests for retired foccers. :pokefun   You know to make sure they can still change gear, select the right gear etc and stuff.  Even my big lumpy twin will cruise happily in 6th at 50mph.
Quote
And did the study mention the 30% or more increase in journey times...?
Not necessarily, reducing max speed can result in better traffic flow and shorter journeys, as Agricola says -
Quote
Huge reduction in air pollution and increased throughput of traffic were confirmed in the study.
Then there is the reduction in accidents and indeed the severity of accidents, plus reduction in costs associated with accidents and resultant delays.

So a 50mph limit could reduce emissions by up to almost 50%.

It is difficult to argue against.  Not that I fancy having the Beemers cruise control set to 50 all the time.

I was going to start a new thread on this, I even pressed the button and started typing it in, but then I realised that it would only get political – or rather the inability of some members here to blah blah blah blah blah blah…….

But yeah 50mph limits across are motorways are being considered.  :eek

General / Re: Question: Test ride a bike before you buy it?
« on: 13 October 2020, 06:30:55 pm »
It’s tricky.  If you are buying from a dealer, you have a few years under your belt and a clean license, these days a test ride should not be an issue.

But if you are buying private, well would you let a stranger have a shot of your bike?  But then there should be a decent saving over the dealer on price.

But yeah, my last three bikes have been new.  The FZS600 and FZS1000 I bought new.  They had great reviews in the press and I was sure it was what I wanted - so I didn't bother trying to get a test ride.

On the other hand I’m gad I did a few test rides before I settled on the Beemer.  The MT10 was fun, but the range is sick joke and it is frankly a bit demented.  Then I was sure I would go for the CB1000R – what a lovely looking bike – but whilst it was quick, handled and stopped, well it just did not gel with me, it left me cold, and I was happy to get back on the old thou afterwards.

I tried the R1250R on the strength of reviews I had read.  I very much doubted I would be interested, but yeah I liked it and bought it.

I guess older bikes you want a shot to check its OK.  Newer stuff, you wanna a shot to see if you like it.

As in, I Have multi bike policy which allows me to ride  other bikes.
Have you checked the detail of your policy?  I am of the understanding that most policies do not cover commercially owned bikes, and certainly with my policy this is the case.  I can ride any other privately owned and insured bike, with the permission of the owner.  This would give third party cover only.  I am not covered under my policy for riding commercially owned motorcycles.

A beautiful looking engine ruined by 80% of it's cycle parts.
I think it looks absolutely fantastic in the first shot, then in the second I’m just not sure.  It is certainly different, clever and the quality of work looks very good.

Would love to see it in the flesh, then maybe I could make my mind up.

Bread that is so stuffed with sugar that it cannot be classed as bread.  Subway is a cake shop - love it :)

Fast food chains - they get ma foccin goat.

However, Ireland's highest court has just ruled that Subway sandwiches are not made with bread.  It appears that Subway is actually a cake shop and will be taxed as such.  Yes!

The age of the bike is generally taken from when it is first registered.  If you have worked out that it is late registered, well that’s a good bargaining tool, but only if there are significant differences between the models.

As for price, that is up to the dealer.  If they ask too much they will get stuck with it.

As for a buyers’ market, a buyers’ market is where the buyer calls the price.  Since lockdown was lifted, at least in the trade, it has been a sellers’ market, demand for used bikes has been high and supply low.  I think that will slowly change.

But frankly I’m at a loss as to why you are getting your knickers in a twist over that add. Seems a genuine ad to me.  I am toying with the idea of adding an FZ1 to my garage, but that one doesn’t interest me (lowering kit for one thing) plus it is the wrong time for me to buy.

So par for the course that a stealer is trying to palm off a 2012 as a 2013, but its so far over the book price for the a 2012 w/21k that its in a different time zone.
13 plate was issued 01-03-13 to 31-08-13  Dealer has bike corectly advertised as 2013 - 13 plate.

The missing bolts are interesting, but as BBROWN points out that should be corrected when it goes through their workshop.  One wonders what muppit thought it was a good idea to remove them.
It is up to the shop to price the bike.  Demand recently has been high and used prices have probably increased, but it will soon turn to a buyers market. If you are interested but don't like the price, simple, don't buy.

BBROWN edit:  Corrected the end date for 13 registrations
