major tight spot on chain
« on: 15 June 2014, 04:46:41 pm »
chain and sprockets been replaced on bike recently (before i got it) and the chain has major tight spot. don't think it saw any lube and was pretty bad on way home after i bought it. Was ok on test ride couple of days earlier but was wet so think it buggered it a bit more.
anyhoo spent couple of hours the other day working each link free with chain lube in each one, that was fun, and seemed to sort it and was running free. short run and was ok, readjusted the chain as moved a bit after lube. Job done i thought.

well ride out today and its back, almost no flex in chain at one area, roll in on and has 35-40mm as should. Should i redo it again or bite the bullet and get a new chain. was a did 530vm so not cheap shite. sprockets look as new so would prob keep them unless they are also part of the problem tho don't know how.

your thoughts are much appreciated :)

Get a new one and sprockets, once a chain develops a tight spot it is buggered.Imagine the consequences if it snapped!

How many links on q standard chain? Seen various lengths and don't want to get wrong one. Is it 110?

It depends how the tight spot developed, if it has developed a tight spot from the bike being stood of a lenghty period and being sat on the sprockets for a long time then lots of lube and then running the chain a little slack whilst making minor adjustments every week or so will pull the chain out, but if the tight spot developed any other way then yes the chain is wankered.

just had a new chain and sprockets fitted after a serious tight spot. was rattling like foc  and I thought its only a matter of time before I die on the motorway if it snaps
bite the bullet and replace it, mines so smooth that it feels like a shaft drive now  :lol

had this on another bike and just changed them. Someone did mention to me letting the chain soak in old engine oil will free it up if not too bad.

I'd get a new chain, it sounds like the o rings on those links have failed and the lube inside has gone and/or water has got in and it's corroded up. Very often the soft link on an otherwise good chain goes stiff for this reason because the o rings get damaged when you pound the rivets, then they fail.
Lubing the chain so that oil gets back inside the rollers can work, but invariably it's better to buy a new chain.

If I were you now I would be checking the bike over intensely just in case there are any other bodges.Stuff like that makes me paranoid.
At least now you know the chain and sprockets are good. :)
