The needle pointing to E stays the same, the fuel light says I need to do something about it.

5 ltrs allows for me being stupid and not noticing Im on empty. And as it makes no real difference, as in its not a reserve better to give myself a bit more time.
Also planning to ride in France and Spain next year. I have done a lot of driving over there and when off the main roads it can be hard finding a petrol station.
Fair points. Probably wouldn't work to well for me though as if the fuel light doesn't mean "think about getting fuel now!" then I would start to ignore it.

Thanks for reply's

As I had the clocks apart for white dials to be added I decided to set my fuel gauge to read empty with 5lts left in tank.
Why? 5 Liters is nearly 60 miles unless you are on a track. I would have thought a 3 liter reserve would be fine.

On my normal commute, the fuel light comes on at about 160~170 miles and if I fill it instantly, it takes about 15 liters. If I run to 200miles on the odometer, it takes 18~19 liters. It has a 21 liter tank.

Brake lines, just replace as part of a full brake service. http://www.helperformance.com/yamaha-fzs1000-fazer-2001-2005

Seat, get a replacement cover from baglux: http://www.bagster.com/saddlery.html?cat=4119&vehicle=14695
You will need someone who has re-upholstered furniture to help you fit it properly but it is worth it.

Grips, I use Grip puppies: http://www.grip-puppy.co.uk/

Foot pegs: I would be interested in other peoples suggestions.

End Can: Get somebody to valet the bike?

I had a similar problem. One of the mounting lugs on the cheese fondue fan surround melted away leaving the rest to rub through the durex thin metal. I found a replacement fan on fleabay that was almost more expensive then the radiator repair.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Gen1 Front master cylinder upgrade?
« on: 11 August 2016, 12:31:30 pm »
I would do some more diagnosis on the the problem is before committing to such a radical solution. When was the brake fluid last changed, when were the calipers last overhauled, what condition are the pads and seals in, and do you have braided hoses fitted? The fluid and/or the hoses could explain the travel and the calipers and seals could explain the notchy feel, as could wear on the brake lever. Replacing the master would only have an limited effect if it is not the cause.

When I am not happy with my brakes, I do the following jobs in order until I got the feel I wanted: clean and lube the calipers, check and replace the pads,  replace the brake fluid, replace the brake hoses, replace the caliper seals, replace the master.

If it helps, I replaced my master last year with a second hand unit I found ion the net, but that was because of corrosion in the screws holding the lid on. It didn't change the feel.

I find the T30's to be brilliant.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Rattle and buzz
« on: 04 July 2016, 11:30:56 am »
I have had a rattle develop slowly over the last few months that has become quite an annoying buzz at around 4k revs. I had thought it was probably the belly pan so this weekend I finally decided to do something about it. It turns out it wasn't the belly pan.  :(

I had noticed before that the clamp holding the end can to the exhaust box was a bit lose but the last time I looked at it, the retaining nut was slipping so I couldn't tighten it properly. This time, the can itself had a bit more movement in it then I was comfortable with so I decided to take it off and see what I could do. It turns out that the aluminium bracket the can hangs off was rotting. The threaded steel bolt that went through the bracket was acting like a file and turning the nice neat hole into a white powdery mess. I put a plastic sleeve over the bolt and ground out the hanger hole to fit. I then cut off and replaced the bolt holding the clamp and it is fitted again nice and snug and no more buzz. However, I know that the rot has set in and it can not last very much longer. Maybe two months, maybe two years but it will loosen up again and I don't think I will be able to fix it properly next time. Any ideas?

But why on earth would you think your Fazer is ever going to let you down?
...
Just like me, time passing, hard living, mild neglect take their toll. My to-do list currently includes fork seals perishing, rubbers on the footpegs worn through, radiator hoses cracking, gas leak from exup and slip on connector. Recent jobs included repairing ignition wire connectors, leaking radiator, replaced brake master cylinder.

Like me, my gen1 is getting on in years and I am starting to think about how I am going to replace her before she lets me down. As nothing new on the market appeals very much expect maybe the Versys 1000, and I don't really have the budget for brand new, I started looking at older stuff. The sad fact is that I have found proof that I am getting old in the fact that the only bike that is tempting me at the moment s a Pan.

:rollin I'm actually amazed and highly amused that you even bit at my remark. You're making it too easy.  You must have a brain the size of a pea.  Do you feel it rolling around inside your empty head when you're on a bumpy road ?
I guess that explains why you want to remain.
I don't really know what your problem is,  it's either psychological or the depressing realisation that we are heading to leave the EU so you're just throwing tantrums in frustration.
Wake up and smell the coffee mate,  you're pathetic unnecessary outbursts are just a source of amusement for us.
Well at least you were right about the pathetic bit but as I have said more then once, whether you want to stay or go is entirely your own business and I really could care less either way. I don't care if you are just stirring shit or believe that bullshit, when you post made up crap, I will call you out.

Just for the record, I am Irish and whether you stay or go there will be pros and cons for me so I am not going to try and tell you or anyone else which way to vote, but I will give you a little tip; blaming others for your problems is easy, but it is not a good place to be.

Oh, and apparently, once we come out of the EU,  not only can they be 10% cheaper but without all the European emissions bullshit can be more powerful, have better midrange and ultimately be more fun.  :D   :lurk :lol
Apparently, you can post any shit you like if you add enough smilies.  :rolleyes
Whether you want to stay or leave is completely up to you, but ho-ho,  :rollin what a laugh, you honestly expected to post bullshit like this without someone showing you up for the little tit that you are? Giggle, giggle  :lol .

Is the Euro 4 compliant 2016 model ZX10R more powerful then the Euro3 complaint 2015 ZX10R or less powerful?
Has the MoT ever lowered its emission standards? Have the MoT published the dates when they will be introducing the Euro5 and the Euro6 emission standards? Is there any reason to think those dates will change?

Brittan already has one of the highest vehicle inspection standards in Europe, they are not going to be coming down any time soon.

My statement was relevant to the OP  concerning a reduction in duty from japan that the EU is preventing us from negotiating making the MT10 £1000 cheaper. It wasn't meant as political trigger to bring the likes of you out of the woodwork.
You opened your post with a personal insult referring to me as a sun reader which is never going to be meant as a compliment, you then go on to insult me again suggesting I'm not qualified to vote. I don't have to be qualified just eligible.  You are obviously just spoiling for an argument over the internet. Really ! Haven't you got anything better to do. Like I said go on to the EU thread and vent your opinions and insults on there. I'm too busy thinking about the MT10 to be bothered with arguing with you. :z
Bullshit! Your post was a straight up political position with only the weakest relevance to the OP and lots of factual errors in it. If you want to vote out, that is your choice, but if you want to post factual errors or political biases, then expect to have your position challenged. The fact that your errors were the "EU bans bent bananas" type errors that the Sun is so famous for  is what made me ask if you read that particular journal. Factual error number 1, the EU is not preventing you from doing anything, as a member of the EU, your directly elected politicians have the final say in all negotiations. If the UK wants to impose a lower duty on Japanese imports then the rest of Europe, (or a higher one) they are free to do so, what they are not free to do, because your elected politicians have signed the treaties involved, is restrict trade within Europe, so they could not change the duty on Ducatis, BMWs, KTMs or Triumphs. However, you are free (today) to buy your next Yamaha from France. Factual error number two, Leaving the EU will not the make Yamahas £1000 cheaper since the crash in Sterling makes the bike £2000 more expensive today then it would have been last December, regardless of whether you choose to stay or to leave.

Don't read any papers and I've never sat in any meeting and agreed to anything so it's all a dictatorship to me especially as they are not elected.....Anyway,kindly take your political statements elsewhere, this is all about the MT10  ;)
If you didn't want to read political statements, then you probably shouldn't have made them.

And since you claim you don't read the papers (does the Sun count?), you probably don't know that Sterling is already the weakest against the Yen that it has been in the last three years having dropped by a quarter since the end of last year which means that means Jap bikes are already 20% more expensive and you haven't had the referendum yet.

And what do you mean "They aren't elected"? Who aren't? Are you sure you are qualified to vote? This isn't the Eurovision song contest so you might want to consider finding out what the facts actually are and who is actually dictating to whom.

If we come out the EU apparently Japanese imports can be 10% cheaper. Another thing the EU is dictating to us over.
I might just wait till after the referendum.!
I take it you are a Sun reader? If you are in the meeting that agrees the deal, then it is not dictating. If you choose not to attend the meeting, nobody is going to listen to you complain.  Or are you looking forward to the return of import duties to "protect the beleaguered British motorcycle industry"?

Five minutes on ebay found cheaper options that do not involve posting security sensitive information to someone who has never posted here before. I will understand if you take this the wrong way, but I do not trust you.

Sorry, but that is not the information that should be posted on a public forum. Contact a Yamaha dealer and they will sort you out.

My mirrors vibrated before I had the carbs balanced was told by mechanic the carbs where way out, after balancing they still vibrate, in fact the whole bike vibrates more since balancing the carbs.
Check that the tank has been properly seated. On one occasion, I got a buzz from the mounting plate of the tank. lifting and then re-securing the tank sorted it.

I find much the same. No problems at all until about 150 miles then the pain kicks in. The good(?) news is that the pain doesn't get any worse after about 200 miles.

Oh sheet you called it, I'm real stupid ...

Well obviously.  :rolleyes

If you are following Yamaha's recommendations then you don't need my advice, since my advice was about what to do if you can't follow Yamaha's advice. Let me try to make it a little easier for you to understand.
It is fine to use mineral oil if you are changing every year or 5000 miles. It is better to follow Yamaha's advice and use semi-synth every 6 months or 4000 miles.
It is fine to use semi-synth if you are changing every two years or 10000 miles. It is better to follow Yamaha's advice and use semi-synth every 6 months or 4000 miles.
You should use fully-synth if you are changing less then every two years or more then 10000 miles. It is better to follow Yamaha's advice and use semi-synth every 6 months or 4000 miles.

It is not better to follow Yamaha's advice of waiting 6 months or 4000 miles if you have exhaust gases contaminating your oil.
It is not better to follow Yamaha's advice of waiting 6 months or 4000 miles if you have coolant contaminating your oil.
It is not better to follow Yamaha's advice of waiting 6 months or 4000 miles if your oil level drops.
It is not better to follow Yamaha's advice of waiting 6 months or 4000 miles if you have evidence of oil breakdown.
It is not better to follow Yamaha's advice of waiting 6 months or 4000 miles if you use your bike in race conditions.

Would you really like to compare the condition of the oil in your engine with that in mine? It costs about £30 from the likes of http://www.millersoils.co.uk/automotive/millercare.asp but I am happy to use someone else if you prefer. We could publish the results here for all to see. If you want to make a bet of it, the person with the poorer oil condition can pay for the others test. Interested?

If you have the front off anyway, it might be worth looking at adding nylon washers, spacers or something else to dampen things. Your other option is to go faster so you don't have to worry about what is behind you.  :evil

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Fully synthetic or part synthetic?
« on: 06 May 2016, 11:26:33 am »
I've had no particular reason to differ from the manufacturers recommend semi synthetic.
Good for you, but the original owner of the bike in question would have had to change oil every 278 miles or less (18 changes in nine years) to met those recommendations. I did not 'justify' skipping changes, I offered advice that might be useful to those not in a position to follow the official recommendations.
You on the other hand would appear to be saying that if you follow the rules, you can avoid having to think. For your information, I check the quality and condition of my oil roughly every 1000 miles, and while I have never had a problem on the Fazer, these tests have detected gasket and piston ring failures in other engines early enough to save me a shit load of cash.

...Out of interest I checked what oil the rider of the 200k Gen1 used ...
Good. I didn't imagine it, though it was Slaninar who mentioned the track day.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Fully synthetic or part synthetic?

...

I am aware of the manufacturers recommendations. I am also aware of the quality of petrol that I use and the conditions that I (and most people on this forum) ride in and how they relate to the worst case conditions that the manufacturers recommendations must deal with. And I have a little knowledge of how oil works and what makes it break down. You yourself have mentioned two extremes of use, the 200k bike and a race/track day bike, and seem to accept that they require different treatment though I am not sure you knew why.

I did not suggest that you ignore the manufacturers recommendations, I suggested that you make an informed decision on the minimum oil quality you need based on your bikes usage, and for that, you have suggested that my bike is not well cared for.

So I ask again, do you know how to check the condition of the oil in your bike/car/bus/van or lawn mower so you can make an informed decision?
[Here is a hint, try googling 'oil blob tests'. They are not exactly difficult.]
