new home build regs - light fittings ??
« on: 01 March 2012, 10:16:59 am »
very puzzled, went to a friends house last night, and 2 of their bulbs had blown, when i asked where the spares were, they said that they have to order them off the internet as they are 3prong bayonet fittings, as its a new build house (about 5yrs old i think) - given all the new houses being built, you would have thought tesco and such would be teeming with them - but i have never heard of them, is there a chance this could be a load of bull, and would their be any harm in swapping the pendant light fitting back to "normal bayonet" fittings so they can use the normal stick low energy bulbs ??

No harm for now , but we will only have led light in the next few years the way the regs are going , so would have to change back to GU/MR type as some point
Its just a ride

Having just done the same. you need a set amount of 3pin bulbs in the house for the building regs sign-off, but once that done it's your house to do as you like with. :-)

The idea was to prevent people using ordinary incandescent bulbs, so they came up with this 3-pin design that wouldn't accept the old style bulbs. As green initiatives go it was impressively stupid: the market is awash with subsidised 2-pin energy efficient bulbs, yet the building regulations for new-builds mean you're expected to buy these hard-to-find expensive ones.
It's an easy DIY job to replace most of them with normal 2-pin sockets and it works out far cheaper than replacing dead lamps with 3-pin ones... so all those 3-pin sockets end up in landfill. How green is that?

3 pin lights: Sound like another case of T Blair and G Brown "Consulting with the industry" . :\

Poundland sell a pack of 2 pendant light sockets for er ...... a Pound.
(Having said that, screwfix sells 'em for 47p each!)
