Just having a browse on Ebay and noticed these new headers for sale, they took my eye because one of the guys in Practical Sports bike mag just fitted the same brand exhaust system on to his bike:

The blurb says it the pipes will run fine with no mods as long as your bike is standard, I've read on here that it's a massive no no to try and remove the EXUP valve and have the bike run right.
Thoughts please guys :rolleyes

I replaced the exup on both of my R1s (5jj carbs) and (5pw injection) with race Hindle headers , the 5jj gave more power through out the rev range 73 torque and 132 bhp with exup to 79 torque and 144 bhp with Hindle headers and about 1 hour dyno time, i havnt dynoed the 5pw yet, i think if you want to remove the exup i would fit either race headers or wire it open, i know its a Fazer not an R1 but there isn't that much difference ;) ;) ;)

When I bought my FZ1N it had a Scorpion can on and the previous owner had disconnected the ex/up valve leaving the cables taped up under the seat.I don't know if he did any mods to the bike but it runs great,perhaps the only thing I could say is that it pops on the overrun which is ok with me anyway. :lol

The fzs1000 gen1 needs the exup in place to run correctly, the FZ1 gen2 does not.
On the FZ1 it is just for emissions and does not seem to affect the running at all, just about every FZ1 with an aftermarket can has no exup fitted.
If the popping on the overrun does start to bother you just disconnect the ais and block it off :)

Cheers for the response guys, I'm just curious as to why the seller on ebay is saying it won't have no adverse affect on performance. My headers are OK and I'm in no rush to get rid of the EXUP as I've not long had all the bolts drilled and tapped out etc.

The ad says no rejetting required, which isn't quite the same thing. :)
The FZS1000 is sensitive to exhaust header design. If the primary and secondary pipe lengths on a 4-2-1 system aren't right, you get a flat spot in the 3 - 4k rpm range which is impossible to tune out. I've seen dyno charts for these headers and it's clear that they're not as well designed as the systems offered by Akrapovic and the other recognised exhaust specialists.
Get the EXUP working properly rather than wire it open.

I used to own a thunderace and the bottom end grunt was seriously affected when the exup valve was locked into the open/high rev position

Mines working fine so that's the way I'll keep it, must admit I do think the Ebay ad is quite misleading.....naughty boys lol

I hope this helps someone who has problems with there Fazer 1000 EXUP and is thinking about buying headers from BlackWidow. I have a 2004 Fazer 1000 and the EXUP rattled like a pig, so I decided to buy the headers of eBay the ones that don't have the EXUP in them.
I was nervous at first after reading the reviews saying about power loss etc, I've had mine on for 3weeks now and I have lost a tiny bit of mid range power , hardly noticeable.
Also the exhaust sounds a lot louder, it pops and sound awesome. I kept my old headers just in case, but I won't be using them anymore.
No more rattling for me....... :)

I've got the holeshot headers on mine , work great , very slight hesitation low down in high gear but not a problem, really good kick up top , I think they still have some on there sight .

I’ve just replaced the exup valve on my gen 1 after running it without for a month or so. The previous owner had the bike into a ‘carb specialist’ as it wasn’t running right with no valve. He apparently richened up the mixture and it ran ok. It’s already been dynojetted, and there’s a R/R printout for 131 bhp and 75lb torque exupless. Not too shabby!
I replaced the exup, and it feels like there’s 10-15% more mid range now, the bike runs better, and I’m getting better fuel economy too.
I don’t nail the engine too often anyway, as my commute is all town work, so why the hell would I want all the power up near the red line? 👍

my 04 37k exup rattles like a pig, especially cold, but i'd never lose it. im guessing if I put a washer or two next to the little spacer it would get to hot and bind up?

Depends on where the wear is. If it's end float, I'd try a stronger/longer spring between the pulley and the pulley washer.
If the wear is in the bushes/valve spindle, the only solution is to replace the worn parts or have new bushes machined up to appropriate specs.

think its the bush mike. got a good mate with a lathe..any idea what metal it is please?

Would the same apply for a Gen2? I was going to get a set of these but if there's any hassle I'd just as soon not bother.I thought you could just do away with the cat and old pipes ,connect to link pipe and can and it would run o.k. seems not, ay? :think

I apparently had no EXUP valve in my last one. It was a pain at low revs, traffic speeds. I tried going back to a standard can, tried another 'performance' can. Made little difference. I didn't even know it didn't have the valve, so I thought it might be a carb problem. Had the carbs removed and cleaned, checked over. Nope. Then got it full monty Ivanised. This made a considerable improvement, and I was happy enough.
When that bike got replaced with my current one, it was only then I realised what had been missing with the low down grunt and smooth pull at low revs, although this one has had the Ivan's from the start. And this despite having owned 3 others before that. I can be such a numpty at times :rolleyes

Trust me, we all make daft mistakes nick. Its the ones you make when you damage summat (often irreparably) that hurt the most lol. Last time I changed my van (traded my 214k sprinter in for a 09 transit with 88k back in 2014) I was so enamoured of having a "new" (to me) van, I didn't feel I needed to check the oil for the first few months When I finally did it was off the dipstick. I wanted to cry, paid eight grand I could ill affored for that van and didn't check the frigging oil...Still got it and it has 170k up now so I didn't kill it, but i'll never know how much damage my negligence actually did.

I used to do a lot more work on my own bikes Paul, but now I give myself less opportunity to foc up :lol
My brother once did a corker - replaced the sump pan on his Z650 for 'reasons', but forgot, or probably didn't know that he needed to take the oil pressure relief valve out of the old one and put it in the new one. Then ran the bike, despite the oil pressure warning light glaring at him accusingly. Much damage done! :eek
EXUP valves, fortunately, are not on that scale of risk :lol

I am now racing a 2004 R1 which appears to have an intact thingy, ummm, exup valve, so some learning for me,, a winter job will be to check it's free movement

Had major problems with the bike, was fully ivanised over 10 years ago and was getting around 95 miles before light came on and other gear changing problems so decided to take the whole thing back to stock,
New carbs, oem air filter etc, Someone decided to play around with the carbs and air fuel settings were between 6 half turns to 7 three quarters!
Next job was to sort my exup out, all the bolts on the valve were seized and rounded, i managed to take whole exhaust off including Radiator, the exup pulley at valve disintegrated also the cables were frayed to 50%,
Headers were horrendously corroded at the manifold so costed it all up to replace and went with Black widow headers and delkevic link pipe and can,
Took all the cables up to the servo out and cleaned servo leaving it attached,
Result????
Well happy with the result, been out twice and a hardly noticeable change between 3k to 4k at all and sounds a lot better too, Looks good also and with my new Fazer Rad cover lol...
No more Exup woes for me or paranoia any more, a mate of mine with a same year fazer has ridden it today and really liked the different character the bike now has, Power too!
I believe after tonnes of research that if you have a modified bike then this wont work for you, these Black widow headers are only designed for stock bikes only,

This is interesting, before I decided to sell my Fazer (after buying a new bike) I was considering this option but I couldn't find any legit reviews on the headers. My bike hasn't been ivanised and the exup valve has been pinned open since well before I owned it (nobody told me). The only thing I notice is slight 'hunting' around 3k but otherwise the bike is very smooth with a good power delivery. If I keep the bike then this is an option I might visit.

When I bought my bike the valve was stuck, I was going to the south of france when the 7k error code showed up. No time to sort it. I didn't notice any problems. Must have been stuck in the closed position I spos, fixed now . I got a new / second hand valve and cover. I think in normal use you can get away with it, nice to have stuff working right though.
