General / Thanks, over and out!
« on: 29 December 2017, 11:10:03 am »
I sold my bike yesterday, FZS600 1999. I had it since February 2015, it was my first bike since 2002 and i rode it all year around as it was my only transport. The FZS600 are great bikes, I loved mine but time came to move on to a car again, health issues, partner and changes in work etc. I would definitely buy one again, though maybe if i do, next one would be fox eye for the better lights. Anyway, thanks to all the help and patience to everyone on here with my questions/posts over the past 2 years, this forum was a goldmine of info and experience. All the best.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Replace rear brake disc with wheel still on?
« on: 22 May 2017, 05:53:06 pm »

I guess you’re trying to avoid the slightly awkward job of persuading the wheel back in without a spacer getting nudged out, but think you’ll just make task harder.
If you can find a thin plank of wood about 2ft long (a bit of old floorboard or timber cladding is ideal) you can place that under the back in line with the bike. Roll the wheel on until it’s in position, then as you raise the end of the plank it’s easy to get the spacers to stay with the wheel as  you squeeze it into the swingarm. Once it’s roughly in line with the axle holes you can chock the plank to that level and you’ve two hands free to wriggle the axle in.
Yes, working alone and not got a paddock stand so i was hoping to avoid taking the chain off and having trouble with the spacers like i did before. Thanks for the suggestion.

FZS600 Fazer / Replace rear brake disc with wheel still on?
« on: 22 May 2017, 11:17:58 am »
Is it possible to replace my rear brake disc with the rear wheel still in situ? I don't think the bolts will be hard to get off as they were taken off not long ago to swap a disc which turned out to be slightly warped. Now I have a brand new disc and I just want to unbolt the old one with wheel still on but axle pulled out a bit to allow it to slide off and slide new one in place and bolt it all back up. Is that possible?

FZS600 Fazer / oil consumption
« on: 19 May 2017, 09:28:12 pm »
Been reading that owners "top up " their engine oil between recommended oil changes. I've never topped mine up in between changes, didn't think I had to.I could never see my oil level in the engine cover window, even when it had it's last service by the garage in September, the window seems too discolored to tell. I watched them change the oil and filter though so I know it was done. The oil light has never come on. The bike runs fine. Should I be worried about topping it up?

Its been quite a while but I fitted the stainless steel version. I need to get a new clamp for the connection between the down pipes and the link pipe as the connector I have seems to be slightly too big and had to use some folded up foil as temp padding. I have ordered the clamp on ebay so should have it by saturday.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: rear preload adjustment
« on: 25 April 2017, 05:09:49 pm »
Thanks all, I have adjusted it now, 3 notches up and it feels pretty firm now, where as before it felt a little saggy. I was surprised the adjuster moved quite easily. I will ask the other half if one of those slip mats is a good idea Darrsi, she hasn't mentioned slipping but will ask her anyhow.
Cheers

FZS600 Fazer / rear preload adjustment
« on: 21 April 2017, 06:35:09 pm »
I've been doing two up riding lately, mainly because my girlfriend will now come on the bike since the weather has warmed up. I think rear suspension might need adjustment, although my gf is petite, the extra weight on the rear seems to make the rear of the bike lower. In the attached photo, does it look as if it's set quite soft already? How many notches to should I turn the adjuster to improve rear suspension for two up riding?

The hole under the fuel cap on mine got clogged a couple of months ago, cleaned it out with a long bit of single core wire and blew down it using a drinking straw. Not sure if that is what you mean though.

I was wondering how this can has fared in the past 7 months and the winter?

i'm pleased to say that it still looks as if it was only put on yesterday, the finish cleans up really well and the bike is left uncovered outside and ridden daily. the wadding hasn't deteriorated and the exhaust hasn't gotten any louder over time and the rivets are still all secure. to say i'm chuffed with it is an understatement, i'll definitely look at getting another for future bikes. I put an mot on the fazer a couple of months back and inserted the DB killer as i wasn't sure if it was too loud without and it flew through the MOT. best 40 quid spent in my opinion, as long as i can get these i'll keep on using them as if you drop the bike on the right hand side the first thing to hit the floor could be £200 plus of exhaust, if old Betsy hit the floor and the can took the brunt i think i can live with 40 quid rather than my tank or something else take a hammering.   ;)

Nice one, I think i will get one this month. Only thing is i don't have a grinder, will I still be able to get a clip on the end of it and the link pipe?

I was on TPFT with bennetts last year, £78 that was. This years they offered a renewal of £85 same cover. I went on go compare, got a bennetts quote for fully comp, same excess details as what I had, that was only £4 extra at £88. So i paid for that this year. Quite pleased with that. And my 600 passed MOT on Saturday no advisories. chuffed.  :lol

Thanks yes they are working because one of them tripped when i was using an electric heater, the kettle, the washing machine and a stereo in the kitchen. It was a couple of weeks ago and couldn't remember which one it was so it must have been the blue 15A one. As i said, its an old house lol.

So this is my fuse box at home, its a very large house been divided into flats and each flat has a fuse box like this. I want to know which fuse is for what? I am assuming the 5A fuse is for lights? What is the red 30A fuse for? is the blue 15A for wall sockets?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Fitting some hand guards
« on: 22 January 2017, 06:10:04 pm »
I have a bit of a problem with bad circulation in my fingers which is the majority of the problem for me.
I do have very good gloves that last me about 1/2 hour when its really cold was just looking at guards to extend that comfortable ride time but for the amout of time I actually can get out in the winter im not sure heated would be worth it.
I have even thought of a bearmat size sort of shield attached to the glove that covers the fingers, just to take away the wind blast, might get in the way when going for the leavers but it would be no longer that my fingers
So do I, surgery on veins & artery in my arm from years ago. I was wondering if muffs are easily removeable, i.e. quick detach/quick reattach and also if when it rains and the bike is parked outside will the inside get all wet and make your hands colder? Having never owned muffs, I don't know but those thoughts kind of put me off muffs.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Fitting some hand guards
« on: 22 January 2017, 05:48:09 pm »

I bought some of those a couple of weeks ago.
I found the original bar ends fractionally too long so used the ones supplied. I couldn't get the bit the bar end screws into out of the bar, so had to saw the plastic ones down to suit... and find a screw that was shorter than the supplied one and longer than the OEM one.
I took a file to the part of the plastic guard to whittle it down to fit close enough to the fixing on the lever assembly for the metal bracket to reach the redundant mirror mount.
Luckily I found a screw of the right chunky dimensions to suit on the LHS, but the one on the right is a left-hand thread so I used a strip of rubber coiled up in the hole as a sort of Rawlplug and a 6mm bolt tightened up sufficiently.
Despite my efforts the guards still collide with the fairing at full lock, though only just… the fairing flexes enough that it's not a hazard. They also touch the mirrors at full lock. So they'll have to come off at MOT time as they'd probably cause it to fail.
Apart from that, and the fact it took me nearly 2 days to bodge onto the bike, I'm reasonably happy with them. At least my hands are warmer.

I could not fit the plastic bar ends supplied with the guards into my bars either, so i kept my original bar ends in place and had a couple of 50mm allen bolts to use to hold the guards and heavy bar ends into the handle bars, but perhaps that is why the metal bracket plate doesn't reach my mirror mounts on the levers. I just see on this page that most mirror mounts are 10mm with 1.25 thread. http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/How-do-I-know-the-size-of-my-motorcycle-mirrors-thread-/10000000175460326/g.html
Having fitted your hand guards did you find it helped stop the numb fingers?

I got a set of these
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Universal-7-8-22mm-Handlebar-Motorcycle-Bike-Handguards-Hand-Guards-Protector-/371841531733?hash=item56937b7f55:g:LrIAAOSwZQRYfcHA

They bolt on to the end of the handlebar weights no problem but I am having problems with how to attach to the handle bar at the other end. The metal attachment strip provided is too short to reach the mirror mount on my handlebars/brake/clutch lever assembly.

But even if it did, I don't know what size bolt fits the mirror mount! any suggestions on how else I can attach the hand guard on that side of it as I am stuck on how to proceed.

Thanks all, i will make my own seal cleaner tool with a bit of old plastic transparency sheet I have and if i am not able to stop the leakage after that I will see about getting seals replaced. Garage wants £170 to do the pair.
