General / Electronic chain oiler for a tenner
« on: 28 December 2018, 09:32:21 pm »

Well I’ve used pretty much all the market Oiler’s over the last 20 years, and they all seem to be flawed in one way or another. And being an engineer I decided to make one of my own, ironing out all the faults of previous purchases!
I’ve made an electronic oiler, and it cost me about a tenner! Yes, a tenner! It switches off when the ignition is off, and is infinitely adjustable! I’ve used it for just over a month or so (500 ish miles) and it’s brilliant so far!
I bought an electronic solenoid valve, an aquarium air valve, some clear aquarium tubing, and an old biro! I also used an old scottoiler lube tube which I had laying around as the reservoir, but you can use any old plastic bottle really. It hasn’t leaked, it’s adjustable in the blink of an eye, and my chain has been lubed even in the last months heavy rain!
As the pics show, it takes up almost no room, the reservoir is under the plastics, and the piping is all hidden away.
 1. Shows the aquarium valve
 2. Is the electronic solenoid valve plumbed into an ignition live.
 3. Is the reservoir which can be absolutely any bottle as long as it fits under the fairing.

For Sale & Wanted / Exup valve/headers
« on: 26 September 2018, 10:56:28 pm »
wanted, an exup setup for my gen 1 which has for some unknown reason has had it removed!

If you’ve got an old set of headers with a siezed valve, or one knocking around, there’s cash waiting!
I’m an old engineer, so I can resurrect most things made of metal!

General / Longest journey
« on: 14 October 2016, 07:32:15 pm »
What's the longest journey/tour/time away you've spent on your Fazer?

I've got a trip to Morocco coming up next year, and was thinking I could do it on the Fazer!!

General / Clutch slip
« on: 26 September 2016, 08:24:51 am »
Never encountered this in a fazer (boxeye) before, and had 4 of them doing well over 100k on em.

When the engines cold the clutch slips at 4k, but gets less and less as the engine oil warms up until there's no slip at all. I've only had the bike a couple of months, but done the basics like adjusting the cable so there's some slack on it.
Gonna change the oil this week, but don't  think it's that.
Any suggestions?

Introduction / Not so newbie
« on: 11 August 2016, 09:05:37 pm »
Well I've been lurking around for a while now for those of you that can remember me.
Just got another boxeye on the road for my commuter, built her up from one which was rather neglected and almost ready for the scrapheap!

Feels really strange being back on a 600/4 again after torquey triumph triples, and litre sports bikes.

Here she is, like putting on an old pair of comfy slippers!!!  8)

General / Should have stayed in bed!
« on: 04 September 2015, 11:11:58 pm »
Have you ever had one of those days?

Mine was today! After a rough restless nights sleep I got up early for work, harassed by the family pets whilst making my morning brew to find there was not enough milk for my cereal. Had to toast some crust bread from the fridge.>:(
Got dressed for the ride to work and pushed the bike out of the garage. Swung a leg over the tiger and kicked up the stand. I then realised the seat wasn't on properly, so leant the bike over to get off, forgetting g to put the stand down.
Aaaaaand over she went, crunch! My leg got caught under the bike and flicked me off into the drive.
After a 290kg squat, I lifted her back up to find the crash bars had done their job, saving the panels and tank. Phew!

Fired her up and headed down the motorway to wrestle with the cage tossers. M6 south has 4 lanes, why the f**k does every asshole commuter use 3 and 4????
Anyway, mid lean going round a left bend from lane 3 to 4, I hit a pothole that a land rover would struggle with. Cue tank slapper, and front end slide!!!! Sh@ my pants and recovered it!

After an equally challenging and les than rewarding shift at work I had a relatively uneventful ride home. I stupidly decided to De stress by taking the R1 out for a 1/2 hour blast with my new shock fitted.
My completely worn out rear tyre decided it didn't like the new set up, and wanted to slide round all the bends, ruining my fun, and further messing up my pants!!!
Got home and decided to change the tyre for a nice set of m3's I've had sat in the garage and been waiting to fit for weeks.
I've changed loads of tyres, but this one was being a tw@ to take off!!! Took a chunk out of my rim, bent a tyre lever, and finally had one smash me in the face before the tyre popped off the rim. I refitted the m3, and it took a decade to inflate it, the popping of the beading nearly took my finger off!

I'm led here in bed with a glass of fine Irish whiskey, nursing a fat lip, bruised leg, and battered ego.

Probably going to choke on a fooking ice cube next!!!::)

General / Intercom system.
« on: 09 August 2015, 04:05:30 pm »
Currently got BT intercom between me and the missus, but having problems with excessive wind noise from pillion set above 60 ish mph and don't really rate them. :thumbdown

I'm considering going for a hardwire system such as Starcom or Autocom. Just after a few opinions and pro's/con's of the systems. Anyone used them?

General / Long journeys? You'll need a tourer mate!
« on: 11 May 2015, 10:10:17 pm »
We'll I took the missus on a road trip on Sunday aloft the gen 1. A 150 mile round trip on a mix of roads into the lakes. When she got there, she could barely move her legs!

She's hinted over the last week or two that she wants to do a bit of European touring, and until Sunday I was hoping to use the big Fazer. Ain't going to happen really.

She said "why don't you get a tourer?" And then for the bombshell. "Dont sell the Fazer and the R1, let's just buy a tourer!!!!!"

I was gobsmacked! And in true man form I was straight on it, and I've been looking at a shortlist of potential distance machines.
The list so far is:-
Pan European
Fjr1300
BMW 1150/1200 rs/gs/rt
ZZR1200
Tiger 1050
ST1050 GT

If there's any personal reviews of these bikes, good or bad, I'd love to hear them :P

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / R1 / gen1 wheels
« on: 06 May 2015, 08:25:24 pm »
There must be a guru on here that possesses the knowledge!

Are any of the R1 wheels compatible with the gen 1 wheels?

I've got sports tyres on the Fazer, and s/t tyres on the R1 (2001 fjj model) and wondered if the wheels could be swapped to make better use of my rubber ;)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Sprockets?
« on: 18 April 2015, 09:45:35 pm »
I know a few of you out there have changed the gearing on their gen 1, but what effects did it really have to
Speedo/mileage
Fuel consumption
Cruising revs.

General / Shiny weekend
« on: 18 April 2015, 07:50:45 pm »
What is it with shiny weekenders?

Went for a fairly normal ride to devils bridge this afternoon, and suprise, suprise it was packed.

The ride back home was full of homeward bound riders from all genres of biking. We were doing a fair lick along some nice sweepers, and ended up behind a row of 3-5 cars with solid white lines on the road. From round behind us came a KTM of some description, hammering it right up to my back wheel, and trying to bully me over to give him room. He then crossed over the solid whites and nailed it past everything and round a blind bend!!!!!! This was closely followed by another bike doing the same thing!!!!

I thought this was a one off, until a cb1300 did the same type of manoeuvre over solid whites round a bend about 10 miles further down the road, and nearly piled into the front of a car he cut up!!!!
And then he blasted through a set of 30's at nearly twice the limit!!!!

Who the Hell do these Frigging weekend idiots think they are???? They just give us decent bikers a bad name!!!

General / LED indicators
« on: 17 April 2015, 06:50:03 pm »
Anyone used any of these, or seen them in a bike?
They look really bright which is what I want. Normal led indicators are a bit naff.

For Sale & Wanted / Wanted, blue gen 1 bagster
« on: 13 April 2015, 09:27:10 pm »
As it says, I'm after a baltic blue gen 1 bagster tank cover.

Anyone got one knocking around that they don't want?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Ignition advancer
« on: 05 April 2015, 09:05:44 pm »
I put an ignition advancer on my R1 a while back, and it made quite a difference  with the lower and mid range torque.

I've also got a gen 1 for work/touring, and its got the full Monty Ivans kit on it. I'm sure I read somewhere that you can't put the I/A on if your ivanised.

Has anyone out there done it, and was it worth doing?

For Sale & Wanted / renthals wanted
« on: 20 March 2015, 09:15:34 pm »
I'm after a set of Renthals for my gen 1 thou.  Anyone got a set knocking around they want a few quid for?

22
For Sale & Wanted / Wanted, Fazer thou
« on: 08 March 2015, 02:28:53 pm »
As it says in the title, I'm after a gen1 Fazer thou, cheap! High Mileage, cat D, not bothered.
Or if anyone out there has a litre sports tourer they want to punt on.

23
For Sale & Wanted / Thundercat for sale/swap
« on: 03 March 2015, 10:27:14 am »
It's time for a change, and my 2001 Thundercat is moving on. The missus wants to do a bit more pillioning, so I'm after a gen1 thou.
The t'cat is a cracking bike, closest to a Fazer 600, but albeit sportier chassis, and a little peakier engine. But hell does it fly! I keep up with the litre class boys on a rideout easily. 8)

Here's the spec.
2001
25000 miles on the clock.
Delkevic s/s complete system and can.
Clear d/b screen.
Wheels recently powder coated.
Recent swing arm bearings.
Complete replacement fairing in thunderace colours which is an awesome paint job. Shines up beautifully.
Mini led indicators with correct relay, not crap resistors!
Shorty adjustable levers.
Set up for commuting/touring with bar raise mod (comfy) 3" bar extenders and custom bar ends. Easily converted back to stock in minutes.

Custom rack, 35litre top box, heated grips, touring Scottoiler, aux charging socket and clock come with the bike of full price paid.
11 months MOT.

It goes, stops and steers exactly as it should.
I've been tracking the fuel consumption on fuelly for 10000 miles (12 months for me), and she averages 57mpg!!! Best is 75, worst is 52. That's better than any of my Fazer 600s.

And its over 200 miles tank range.

I'm after £1400 without the touring mods, or £1600 for the lot.
Or p/x for a Fazer thou.

General / How far to commute?
« on: 10 January 2015, 01:07:56 pm »
I 'Might' be getting a job in a few weeks which is 70 miles away, but hopefully for quite a bit more money, and a much  better job!

I currently do a 40 mile round trip during my shifts, and I see that as reasonable.

How far do you guys commute to work, and how do you get there? (car/bike/bus)
