General / Which Paint/Primer?
« on: 24 September 2016, 10:42:50 am »
Hi Folks,

I've finally got around to sanding and painting my Givi luggage rack but could do with some advice on which paint to use.

I'm not too fussed about looks, it's corrosion protection that interests me.

Following previous efforts with poor results I'm really keen to use a good primer, but most of the anti-rust top coat paints I'm looking at seem to want to go straight on to bare metal (or even rust!). Is it just that they can do that but will also be fine on top of a primer, or must they go strait to bare metal? It's Hammerite stuff seems most common.

Is red oxide primer any good?

Which primer/paint combination would you recommend?

I'm restricting myself to stuff I can apply with a brush due to lack of facilities, and just looking for a basic satin black finish.

Advice appreciated as always.

Thanks, Andy

FZS600 Fazer / Radiator Paint or Replace?
« on: 31 August 2016, 07:27:30 pm »
Hello Folks,

The paint on my radiator was flaking for a long time, now it's finally flaked off on either side revealing aluminum oxidization (i think?) on the rad. You know the stuff, a white powdery rough look.

I'm just looking for guidance as to if it's worth trying to paint it or not.

Is it likely to rot through quite quickly?

If I were to paint, presumably I'm going to have to clean up the ally oxide first, how should I go about that?

Or is this a case of it's just going to keep on rusting away under the paint and I'll be wasting my time.

Anyone recommend an after market pattern radiator?

Thanks, Andy

FZS600 Fazer / Warbling C64 Sound from Front Wheel
« on: 19 November 2015, 12:04:52 pm »
Hello Folks,

Just looking for people's thoughts on a funny sound my bike developed from the front wheel area last week.

To me it sounds like a warbling, oscillating sound; my mechanic described it as sounding like a commodore 64 loading.

It's obvious, loud, consistent and easy to reproduce; not sporadic or intermittent. It's quiet up to around 25mph then it starts and remains up to around 90mph.

It's consistent with road speed, increasing in pitch as road speed increases. It's not in any way linked to engine RPM; it remains unaffected when I pull in the clutch lever and coast. If I brake then it decreases with road speed, but doesn't immediately disappear under braking pressure.

My first thoughts were wheel bearings, but my mechanic and I have had the front wheel off and inspected them and they look good and feel smooth. They were last replaced with OEM ones about 20k ago.

My next thought was the speedo drive, but it looks intact. It was replaced with the upgraded part after the original finally failed about 2k ago.

I've of course confirmed that tyre pressures are exactly correct (36 psi front 42 psi rear), that the front sprocket area is clean, and the front sprocket is secure. We've also adjusted the chain.

I've also had the callipers off, cleaned them and checked for foreign objects, and also checked for anything between the front tyre and the mudguard. Bike is otherwise generally all good and well serviced.

My mechanic's theory is that the large spacer in between the bearings inside the wheel hub is rotating, as we noticed when checking the bearings that when he rotated the bearing on one side the other bearing on the other side rotated too. Is that normal?

He very slightly drifted the bearings back out a bit to release pressure of the centre spacer (he described it as "1mm if that") and the noise was indeed gone for a few hundred miles, but has now returned.

Has anyone experienced problems with the centre spacer rotating? Is that normal? Any suggested remedy? Or do you think it might be something else? Would you just change the bearings even though they seem good?

Any advice or similar experiences very welcome, as always.

Thanks, Andy

FZS600 Fazer / Unexpected results flushing brake fluid
« on: 24 November 2014, 12:54:45 pm »
Hello good people of Fazer land,

Yesterday for the first time I had a go at flushing out old brake fluid and replacing with new.

All went smoothly with the front-left calliper. I'm using the Mityvac vacuum pump method and so I attach my bleed line to the nipple, use the pump to create a vacuum / negative pressure, open the bleed nipple and watch the old fluid get sucked out to be replaced with new fluid from the reservoir, then close the bleed nipple, check the reservoir hasn't dropped to low, top up the negative pressure with the vacuum pump and repeat.

I flushed through 3 reservoirs of fluid for the left and was pleased to find the brake lever continued to feel nice and firm. All good.

Moved on to the right, same process as above but oddly when I opened the bleed nipple nothing happened. No fluid was drawn out, no air, negative pressure remained constant. I'm sure there is a vacuum because when I remove the bleed line (having closed the nipple) I can hear the rush of air. I wasn't expecting this and so could do with advice on how to proceed please.

Is the bleed nipple faulty?
Can it be replaced without draining the whole system down? It's the first time I've attempted this job and I was hoping to avoid tacking the greater job of a full bleed at this stage.

Or maybe it's just blocked?
Is there some way I can test this, perhaps some way to go about cleaning without causing damage to internals?

Has anyone else experienced this?

As always any pointers, advice or wider discussion welcomed.

Thanks, Andy

FZS600 Fazer / Fitting your own tyres
« on: 03 September 2014, 12:51:43 am »
Hello good people of fazer land.

I'd like to learn to fit my own tyres.

Can anyone confirm or deny that it's possible to do for a tyre of our sort with a decent set of tyre irons, rim protectors, tyre grease and foot pump?

I've been watching lots of vids and seems simple enough, but doable for our tyres, or over ambitious?

Thanks, Andy

FZS600 Fazer / coolant
« on: 22 June 2014, 12:43:16 am »
Hi folks, sorry if this has been done to death but I'm confused.

Could someone link me the right type of pre-mix coolant on halfords site?

Do I want OAT or silicate?

Do I need a particular colour?

Are anti-freeze and coolant the same thing?

Thanks, Andy

For Sale & Wanted / Wanted: Centre Stand
« on: 14 April 2014, 01:00:05 pm »
Hello Folks,

I need the spring which holds the centre stand up (the larger of the two, although happy to replace both).

I'd consider buying either just the springs, or if it's in good condition the whole centre stand unit (including springs).

If you have anything like this available drop me a PM and we'll sort something out.

Or if anyone knows any cost effective way to replace the spring (a standard one? pattern part?) let me know!

Thanks, Andy

General / MOT Timing
« on: 24 March 2014, 11:12:02 am »
Hello Folks,

What's the earliest I can book an MOT?

People say one month but I've been looking at my MOT certificate and it says a month "to preserve the existing renewal date".

So can I book an MOT earlier than a month if I don't care about loosing a month or two on my MOT and having to go earlier next year? Or can't it be done sooner?

It's just that I want to remain flexible holiday wise and don't want an MOT due mid camping trip.

Thanks, Andy

FZS600 Fazer / Spy Motorbike Alarm
« on: 20 September 2013, 03:21:50 pm »
Hello Folks,

Has anyone tried the Spy Motorbike Alarm?

http://www.motorbikealarm.co.uk/shop/spy-all-in-one-motorbike-alarm-and-immobiliser-battery-backup/

The feature I like is that is has a remote which can sound the alarm on your person or in your house, rather than having the bike itself making a racket.

Has anyone tried one of these and have an opinion of it? Recommended?

How tricky are they to fit? Can be done without cutting my wires?

I don't want to wire up the immobilizer or remote start features - those things make me nervous. Just the basic alarm features would be fine.

Anyone who has fitted happen to still have the bike-specific wiring diagram they send?

Thanks, Andy

FZS600 Fazer / Front Wheel bearings
« on: 19 August 2013, 02:03:06 pm »
Hello Folks,

I have a knocking sound from the front of the bike.

Not a rhythmic sound in time with engine or wheel as discussed in other recent threads.

It's just occasional when I change speed or direction, or get on or off the throttle.

Sounds like it might be time to have my wheel bearings checked out? Am I on right track? Or maybe steering head bearings I guess.

I'm just about to speak with local dealership, any suggestions roughly what sort of price range should I be looking at for parts and labour?

Thanks, Andy

FZS600 Fazer / Footpeg Rotation Problem
« on: 09 August 2013, 07:22:40 pm »
Hello Folks,

I've got a problem with the front left rider's footpeg rotating around further that it ought.

At times its happening when riding and rotating around so far that it ends up essentially upside down, and as a result the peg folds downwards rather than upwards, and collapses under the weight of my foot.

Comparing to the other side a little rotation in the peg seems normal, but the left side rotates way past the slight play found in it's opposite number.

Is this something that case be adjusted? Or is the rotation meant to be limited internally within the part, in which case I guess it's worn and it's a case of replacing the assembly?

Only nut I could see is immediately opposite the peg on inside of bracket, but I'll need to disconnect gear change linkage to access so I thought I'd check here first.

As always all advice and suggestions appreciated.

General / Destinkification of Leather Jacket
« on: 20 July 2013, 11:34:47 pm »
Hello Folks,

Have recently acquired a vintage 1980's style leather jacket second hand. Very cool, looks the business.

But it's my first leathers, and so I could with some advice.

How do I got about cleaning it when it gets stinky?

It's real (black) leather on the outside, pretty thick and heavy.

On the inside it has a thin fabric lining which is not removable, sewn in, and there's fairly substantial padding in key areas. Only thing I can remove is padding from back.

Dry clean? Anti bacterial spray? Hand wash? Seems way too heavy for washing machine.

And once it's clean do I need to treat it with anything to restore the leather?

Any advice appreciated, as always.

Thanks, Andy

General / Cheap Helmet Camera Recommendation
« on: 09 July 2013, 12:59:04 pm »
Hi,

Can anyone recommend a cheap helmet camera?

I'm on a budget and so limited to the cheap ebay stuff, rather than brands like Go Pro or Drift etc.

I only really want it for for insurance purposes and so don't need great quality, just sufficient.

My main requirements are:

- Can charge and run permentently from bike battery (USB, cigerette lighter etc - I don't mind getting cables etc separately)
- Can record while charging
- Waterproof, or waterproof casing (unless suitable to be installed inside helmet)

And my wish list nice to haves would be:

- Rolling recording, so it records say past 1 hour on rolling basis
- Starts recording automatically when powered on

Any recommendations, advise, suggestions welcome.

Thanks, Andy

FZS600 Fazer / Quick Stoopid Oil Change Questions
« on: 07 June 2013, 09:55:57 pm »
Going to be doing my first oil change soon, couple of quick (and probably stoopid) questions:

1) I'm in the habit of using copper grease on any bolts I remove. Should I grease the sump plug before I put it back in, or do I risk contaminating the oil? If so, copper grease or lithium grease?

2) Which way to turn the sump plug to undo? I've heard people say its the other way than usual because it's upside down, but that's confused me. Don't want to thread it.

3) Will an old washing up bowl be big enough for draining the old oil? Otherwise I'll go asda get cat litter tray.

Sorry if these are dumb, just building up confidence to do these jobs myself (managed to do brake pads successfully but had em checked by professional to be safe, he said all good!).

Thanks in advance, Andy

FZS600 Fazer / How heavy is an engine?
« on: 23 May 2013, 07:20:26 pm »
Hello Folks,

How heavy is an FZS600 engine?

Can it be lifted? What about by two people?

Is it too heavy to transport in the boot of a medium sized car?

Just need a rough idea so I can get a perspective on weather I need to rent a van or rope my mate in to helping.

Thanks, Andy

FZS600 Fazer / Front brakes binding
« on: 17 March 2013, 01:25:07 pm »
Hello folks,

Need some help with binding front brakes.

Installed new pads yesterday.

All went smoothly when installing them.

But the brakes are now binding a bit.

I did spray some brake cleaner in there to clean the grime off pistons before pushing them back in.

But I didn't use any copper grease because I was nervous of using grease near the brakes, and thought I could more easily add later if required than remove.

Any advice? What should I be looking for? Is it just a matter of taking pads out again and cleaning thoroughly?

Any pointers appreciated.

Thanks, Andy

FZS600 Fazer / Front Discs
« on: 12 January 2013, 12:12:59 pm »
Hello Folks,

Bike went in for a service this week with local Yamaha dealership, all the standard stuff done and strait forward, but have been left with a question about front discs.

I asked for new pads front and rear - they've done the rear but said it wasn't worth doing the front as the discs are starting to wear and it'll just eat the pads.

Recommendation is that discs and pads should be changed at the same time in a couple of thousand miles. Estimated £300.

I've done 16,000 miles and was wondering if it's typical to need to replace brake discs at this mileage due to wear?

I'm eager to look after the bike well, but after telling the dealership I'll think about it and get back to them it's occurred to me that I can get quite a lot of pads for £300.

I'm going to take a really close look at the discs myself this afternoon and will let you know what I see, but I hadn't noticed any grooving.

They described it as a wavy feel when you run your fingers over them (but I don't think they meant anything as extreme as warping).

If it needs doing then it needs doing, but just trying to get a feel for the situation as it's a bit unexpected, and difficult to afford.

Any advice / experience welcome.

General / GetGeared.co.uk £50 Gift Card for £30 (ish)
« on: 09 January 2013, 09:48:08 pm »

Hello Folks,

Spotted this deal and am using it to finally buy myself some soft luggage for our upcoming Euro tour. Saves me £20 hopefully.

It's a £50 GetGeared.co.uk voucher for £30 (if they all go, or £35 at present).

http://www.buyapowa.com/ref/ISbUAu

And even better if they all sell then it saves me a fiver!

PS) Hope I'm not breaking any rules posting this but some kind chap previously posted a £5 off on ebay voucher which I was able to use on some waterproofs so thought i'd return the favour.

FZS600 Fazer / Tank and Saddle Bags
« on: 11 November 2012, 07:14:45 pm »
Hi, Can anyone recommend soft luggage to fit an 02 FZS 600?

I've decided against hard luggage for the time being as I just can't afford it, but am really getting in to my touring.

I'd need to find myself a tank bag and a pair of saddle bags.

Does pretty much any bag fit any bike? Or are there specific ones which are known to fit the fazer well?

A mate lost his saddle bags on the M6 at speed and I'm eager to avoid a repeat of this incident. Do they all secure well?

Any recommendations and advice welcome.

Thanks, Andy

FZS600 Fazer / Front Sprocket
« on: 01 October 2012, 11:03:44 pm »

Hello Folks,

Firstly just to quickly introduce myself: I'm Andy and I've recently become the proud owner of a 2002 FZS 600 Fazer. My first big bike and I absolutely love it. So pleased I chose the Fazer.

Anyway, having been reading these forums I've become aware of the problems many people have reported with the front sprocket nut.

I'm a little concerned about this and would like to begin by checking my own bike to see if the nut is secure.

My question for now is: does the cover to the front sprocket require a gasket seal? Or can I safely remove this at home and have a quick peak?

It's been a long time since I've done any motor mechanics so please consider me an amateur. Is this something I can check myself?

Also any hints on what I should look for to confirm if it's OK or has old/new part appreciated.

All the best, Andy
